Thursday marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day, a major turning point in World War II. It helped lead to the defeat of Nazi forces in Europe. More than 150,000 American, British and Canadian troops landed on the shores of northern France on June 6, 1944. About 2,500 of the 73,000 U.S. soldiers who fought in the battle died. As a 23-year-old army medic, Ray Lambert saved countless lives in Normandy, despite being wounded. Now 98, he recently co-wrote a book called “Every Man A Hero.” Jan Crawford reports,” said CBS News in an interview with the D-Day veteran.

The video mixes historic film footage with the interview, modern and period scenes. It’s moving.

The correspondent couldn’t help but cry at one point, which happened on this end watching the veteran’s moving story.

Leaders from around the world are starting two days of observances to remember the 75th anniversary of D-Day. President Trump and Queen Elizabeth are part of this morning’s ceremony in Portsmouth, England, one of the main departure points for the WWII invasion of German-occupied France. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is also there, along with representatives from all 16 allied nations that took part in D-Day. Anthony Mason reports from Normandy,” said CBS News about the introduction to their video, below.

For the vast majority of us who have never experienced combat, it’s instructive to grasp how brave these men where. No wonder they are known as “the greatest generation.”

Imagine, in 1940 or 1941, the Germans and the Japanese may have appeared almost unbeatable.

But by VE Day on Wednesday, May 8, 1945 the war in Europe was over.

By Monday, September 2, 1945, the war in the Pacific was over.

Without the willingness to fight, the Nazis, Japanese, and Soviets may well have conquered much of the world. The clarity of World War II was that there are some battles that simply can’t be avoided.

Other struggles are more obscure, but are just as real. The greatest generation reminds us that the willingness to do what is right can make the difference.

Sky’s Sarah Jane-Mee explains the significance of the D-Day landings, as the nation commemorates the 75th anniversary.

For those who are still living, we salute you. For those who died that day, we’re in your debt, and that of your fellow veterans.
