Phishing Alert – Targeting Business and Consumers – Scammers Masquerading as Apple

Apple is one of the most popular smartphones in the world, so scammers targeting product users have a wide possible target audience, including those involved or connected to the manufactured housing industry. For example, “Canada is predominantly an iOS market, according to research. As of November, 54.9% of all smartphones (15.9 million devices) were Apple devices,” said Media in Canada on Jan 23, 2018. In the U.S.,  “Of these 223 million smartphone users, over 90 million will own an iPhone,” per Statista 2014-2019 data.

The tech world is already onto this, but manufactured housing professionals may or may not be aware of this potentially costly phishing scam.

The latest scam targeting Apple device users is particularly insidious, appearing to come as a call from the company’s real phone support number, according to a well-known security researcher,” said Roger Fingas for Apple Insider.

Global Cyber Risk CEO Jody Westby was one of those targeted by the scam, but they “got in touch with an AppleCare representative, who confirmed that the original call was a fake.”

The caller ID might look something like this screen capture below.

It looks real, but its a scam. Its similar to scams that claim to be the IRS calling, but the IRS doesn’t make collection calls, the federal agency says. Pros are also reminded to avoid using the wordyes” with calls from companies or individuals that they don’t know and trust.  Another scam uses that word “yes” and can make a scammer appear to have your verbal authorization to do something, which may include credit card authorizations.

A video blogger described how they handled the scam, in the posted video, below.

Brian Krebs “suggests that that as in most phishing incidents the scammers are likely baiting people into handing over personal details or to get direct payment for bogus services,” said Apple Insider. “While blocking the robodialer isn’t an option for people who need to talk to Apple, the scam should nevertheless be easy to detect, since Apple doesn’t cold-call its support clients and the reply number in the message isn’t associated with the company.”
