‘Updating All Buildings,’ Other AOC “Green New Deal” – Mixed Reviews Among Democrats, GOP Jeers

Yes, we are calling for a full transition off fossil fuels and zero greenhouse gases,” says part of a working document provided by backers of the so-called “Green New Deal” that rising star freshman Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or “AOC” (NY-D) announced in the company of others today.

The numbers don’t work,” said a left-of-center CNBC talking head in the video below.  But some are cheering, while others are jeering AOC’s “Green New Deal.”

Here are some pull-quotes from the FAQ of the New Green Deal working document.

  • This is a massive transformation of our society with clear goals and a timeline.”
  • The Green New Deal resolution a 10-year plan to mobilize every aspect of American society at a scale not seen since World War 2 to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and create economic prosperity for all.”

Among the calls in this proposal would be the elimination of air travel in the U.S.

Upgrade or replace every building in US for state-of-the-art energy efficiency.”

Totally overhaul transportation by massively expanding electric vehicle manufacturing, build charging stations everywhere, build out highspeed rail at a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary, create affordable public transit available to all, with goal to replace every combustion-engine vehicle.”

There is no discernable discussion in this proposal about the constitutionality of the plan, which arguably violates private property rights on numerous levels.

Backers of the Green New Deal Claim

The Green New Deal has momentum.

·        “92 percent of Democrats and 64 percent of Republicans support the Green New Deal” (this claim seems highly unlikely, and they offer no proof, as talking heads on both sides of the aisle are raising doubt and concerns).

·        “Nearly every major Democratic Presidential contender say they back the Green New deal including: Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Jeff Merkeley, Julian Castro, Kirsten Gillibrand, Bernie Sanders, Tulsi Gabbard, and Jay Inslee.”

·        “45 House Reps and 330+ groups backed the original resolution for a select committee

·        “Over 300 local and state politicians have called for a federal Green New Deal

·        “New Resolution has 20 co-sponsors, about 30 groups (numbers will change by Thursday).”

In what can be seen as a swipe at the plan, right-of-center Fox Business reported today that “National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow on President Trump’s comments on socialism during his State of the Union address and the Trump administration’s economic policies.”

Kudlow stressed anew that under President Trump, the war on business and success were over.

It is unclear if it will be related, but Senator Elizabeth Warren said she will have a major announcement on Thursday.  Stay tuned.

This will be a debate that could take on several forms.  Democratic billionaires Michael Bloomberg, and Starbucks founder Howard Schultz are among those who have taken aim at this types of plans. See the related reports, further below.

Bottom line?  Given that the chances today to even pass the House would seem slim at best for this concept.  It would be a non-starter in the GOP controlled Senate and White House.

But the ‘energy’ and media buzz behind it would push the Democratic party further left.  Will that help or hurt the GOP, minor parties, independents and others in 2020? Perhaps like 2016, it will be another election unlike any others before it.

variation of a Texas maxim. Seeking bipartisanship can be dangerous, as the dark humor noted above reminds readers. But let’s risk finding common ground for the next few minutes. Affordable homes ought to be a non-partisan or bi-partisan issue. The topic of this column, properly understood, is likewise a non-partisan challenge that at least on paper enjoys bi-partisan support.
