Leaders’ and Readers’ comments on MHARR and MHI joining hands on Dodd-Frank reform

June 24th, 2011 Catherine Frenzel 6 comments

When you get a lot of e-comments and calls on an article, it makes a writer think he has hit an important theme.  There is no easy way to capture all of the comments on our last column:

Can MHI and MHARR Join Hands on Dodd-Frank for Manufactured Housing’s Future?

But let’s provide a representative sampling of what Industry Leaders and Readers are saying about the article linked above.

Most of these emailed messages start with my name, but I will use that only in the first one to save space and time.  We are leaving most typos in, unless there is a character ‘gremlin’ which needs to be modified to reflect the writer’s intended word.  I’ve edit out obvious tip-offs or give-aways of the writer’s identity as well.

Let’s begin:

Tony

I applaud you for taking this public stand. You’re saying what just about everyone in the MHBusiness is thinking, and saying privately these days. And as far as that goes, Good for You!

—————————————-

Congratulations on what may be your best work yet! You have accurately
summarized the chasms that exist between our industry associations, MHI & MHARR.

—————————————-

…a ‘next step’ in this challenge, i.e. Good News! MHI & MHARR have worked together ‘in our behalf’ in the past, so precedent is present! “Hey you two, are you listening? We expect you to do so again - NOW!”

—————————————-

Back to MHI/MHARR: True, the two entities have come together for initiatives in the past (MH Improvement Act of 2000 for instance), but while their intentions are purportedly the same, they have gone about furthering those intentions in drastically different ways.

True, you can catch more flies with honey, but there should be a point of ‘enough is enough.’ I don¹t agree with Danny¹s broadside blasting style in every instance, but in his defense, he¹s been watching HUD running pretty much how they want to, disregarding the law (MHIA 2000), while the ‘get along’ guys seemingly just wants no one to get their feelings hurt.

—————————————-

I will begin by stating that I am a strong supporter of MHI and I am convinced that for the good of the industry and our deserving customers, this smoldering feud must STOP!  For the past decade, I have seen opportunities for industry unity vanish as a result of the egotistic attitude some of its leaders.

—————————————-

Manufacturers, retailers, community owners, financial institutions and our customers are all in the same boat. Will we be paddling together toward a better future or separately bailing our individual boats to keep them from sinking?

—————————————-

It is clear to me, that since my initial involvement with m/h in…that legislative advocacy between the manufacturing and sales of new homes and the needs of existing communities are as different as ever.  The creation of two National legislative advocacy organizations to support these two divergent interests could result in the most efficient application of resources for each separate industry interests.  Problem is: how to provide financing for both. With most of the financial responsibility currently being provided by manufacturers and related suppliers, will communities and their related support services be able to provide for a separate organization?

—————————————-

It is unfortunate that MHARR can’t cooperate with MHI for the betterment of the industry.  In my experience, though, cooperation in simply not in MHARR’s vocabulary.

—————————————-

Years ago, I watched a movie entitled Young Frankenstein. Gene Wilder played a young neurosurgeon Dr. Victor von Frankenstein.  He re-animates a lifeless body, but mistakenly transplanted an abnormal brain into it.  The huge, powerful ‘monster’ becomes a danger.  So Dr. Frankenstein does a ‘transfusion’ between the two of them to calm the monster.  Sometimes I think we need a ‘transfusion’ between Danny and Thayer, to balance each one for the betterment of our Industry.

—————————————-

…the writing deserved the recognition…

—————————————-

What we could accomplish by combining revenues and resources would probably amaze all of us.

Has this ever been pursued. ??

—————————————-

This is a sampling of the emailed comments on this topic.  There have been posted comments, and statements posted on LinkedIn relative to this subject as well.  Phone calls have been overwhelmingly supportive of the article:

Can MHI and MHARR Join Hands on Dodd-Frank for Manufactured Housing’s Future?

So can we encourage MHARR and MHI leaders to cooperate together for the betterment of all on Dodd-Frank and other key Industry issues?

Can each association support the other in key areas?

Can there be peace and cooperation between these Industry voices?

What say you?  Your posted or emailed comments are encouraged and appreicated. # #

Mark Twain and the Manufactured Housing Industry

“The report of my death was an exaggeration.”
~ Mark Twain

So said the great American author and humorist after reading his own obituary on June 2, 1897.

Well, the IBISWorld Report was something like that for the manufactured housing industry. Politics, financial log jams and poor industry image, added in to the low ebb of the economy and housing market, could be pall bearers for this reported – or – occurring demise.

But wait – that is an exaggeration. Passionate commitment is still engaged, as reported and posted here each day in the Daily Industry Business News Blog, The Masthead Blog, the Industry Voices Guest Blog and monthly Feature Articles. Top notch pros are here with information, inspiration and innovation to help in your area of Industry service and dedication. Join with thousands of others to make a difference.

As Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” … in the manufactured housing industry.

Here for June is line-up of twenty-two pros who felt it worth their while to devote time to share with you their expertise. Let’s get right to the new articles!

Memorial Day 2011 and the Manufactured Housing Industry

Last year for Memorial Day weekend, we served you a helping of Beyond Burgers, Brats and Buns.  This year we bring you this timely Memorial Day column by Michael Barnabas:  We the People – Memorial Day 2011 – Not on My Watch.

We also have a fine pictorial reminder sent in by a friend for our INspirations Blog this Memorial Day.

We have had a strong response to Marty Lavin’s recent columns, The Train To Oblivion and Again, Train to Oblivion, redux. Let me share a word of caution tied to a word of encouragement.

When we first hear, read or understand a message, we may feel a certain rush.  Then, there tends to be a fade out.  In America, where the focus of news is ever changing, Japan’s earthquake in March or Haiti’s disaster in January 2010 may have already passed from our thoughts.

We as Industry professionals cannot go to sleep on the topic that Marty and others are raising.

We need to encourage those who write and I invite others who have Industry relevant topics to sound off!  Please send your proposed items for Industry Voices Guest Columns with that in the subject line, and copy both myself and Catherine@mhmsm.com..

Better together.  That is a slogan used by ROC USA.  I want to encourage people to think about that slogan, and the success that program has enjoyed.  100+ conversions, quite an accomplishment.  No doubt those residents feel something special this Memorial Day.  Paul Bradley certainly gave us some points to ponder regarding IBISWorld‘s flawed report.

I want to thank all those who write – and read! – or podcast with us here.  Erin Patla has been doing our podcasts for right at a year.     Happy Anniversary Erin!  If you want to stay up to date during drive time or just prefer to listen than read, join our ever-growing audience of Factory Built Housing News at Noon podcast listeners.  See why so many are delighted with Erin and her podcasts.

Our editor Catherine Frenzel helps keep our wheels turning!  She, too, has been with us now for approaching a year.  When you think about MHMSM.com = MHProNews.com = think of the team from Bob Stovall to Industry in Focus reporter Matthew Silver, and all of our feature writers, team members and guest columnists.

To borrow ROC’s fine tag line, we are better together.  Many of our tips and ideas come from you.  When we glitch, readers let us know!  Important discussions or themes come from readers like you.  The more you read, the more you know.  The more you know, the more you can grow.  The more we share, the more we will dare to do.

Those are not platitudes, they are reality.  Happy Memorial Day.  Please thank a veteran. # #

A Look at Marty Lavin’s Manufactured Housing’s Train to Oblivion

May 18th, 2011 Catherine Frenzel 3 comments

Two topics today.  The second one is an industry pro’s painful experience with local/state officials.  But we will start with…

Topic 1:  Marty Lavin’s The Train to Oblivion

Attorney, manufactured home community owner and industry expert Marty Lavin has shared a wake-up call in his Industry Voices guest column post, The Train To Oblivion

Numerous comments – public and private – have been made about this.  Few dispute Marty’s points.  Many believe it will get better, and point to various factors or examples of success that can make things better.  But the reality is that after two years of supposedly bumping bottom, we find that we are sliding southward in shipments once again.

Examples of success are good.  But success stories need to become more widespread in order for the Industry as a whole to turn around.  Everyone needs to take a serious look at what Marty has written. He deserves credit for having the chutzpah to share it.

We need to take a good, long look at the underlying issues that cause our industry’s woes, and address them.  Everything else could just end up wishful thinking.

Please see the article and comments at the link above.  Feel free to join in the conversation.  If you want to know how to use post a comment with the Disqus system, watch the video you’ll get when you click on the green button near the top right.

Topic 2.  A Manufactured Home Retailer’s Painful Experience with Local/State Officials

Gary Ekert’s photo of a home that he had a permit for, but had to later raise 7’ up

I took a call earlier this week from a gent in AZ.  He is an MH retailer.  I will invite him to post his story below in his own words (see Disqus comments).  Keep in mind that Gary told me he has a PhD (so clearly, intelligent), is retired from law enforcement (understands the meaning and importance of the law) and has been in our Industry for many years (not a rookie).

Officials reportedly required that this home be blocked approx. 7’ up, after the initial set.

As you read his story, please feel free to comment.

You may also want to share your own stories on how you tried to do it right, and still had something go way south on you.

Solutions.  Our Industry needs them!  Maybe we need an ‘open line Thursday’ and invite comments from readers on Solutions for our Manufactured Home Industry? # #

Glimpses of the Great Southwest Home Show in Tulsa, OK

April 29th, 2011 Catherine Frenzel No comments

Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Members of the MHMSM.com team are attending the Great Southwest Home Show (GSWHS), billed as the World’s Largest Indoor Home Show, at the QuikTrip Center in Tulsa, and have some images and impressions to share.

Well laid-out floor plan and design elements such as foliage made it easy and attractive to visit the homes on display at the QuikTrip Center.

Thursday evening, April 28, was an “All Industry Night Reception” at the QuikTrip Center, where Industry pros could stay to relax and mingle with friends on site.  MHMSM.com’s Business Development Director Jeff Templeton says, “Wish you were here!”

Friday, April 29, MHMSM.com’s Publisher L. A. ‘Tony’ Kovach captured some images of a Sunshine Home interior and exterior; this model is an 18 single-wide with residential-style island kitchen island kitchen.   Over a dozen factories were represented at the Show, each featuring the quality, style and value characteristic of modular and manufactured homes.

Later (below), we see MHMSM.com IT/Web Tech Bob Stovall leading the popular “Dominate Your Local Market” workshop.

From left to right (below): Panel members L. A. ‘Tony’ Kovach, Don Miner (Abernathy Agency), and Bob Stovall, with Doug Gorman (Home-Mart), one of the GSWHS principals.

Public Days began mid-afternoon and will continue through the weekend.  Come on down! # #

Show Time and the Manufactured Housing Industry

April 5th, 2011 Catherine Frenzel Comments off

March Madness is history and UConn fans revel in their team’s win over favored Butler. Now the NBA playoffs begin April 16.

A more brilliant history has been made in LouisvilleTunica… and is coming up in YorkTulsa… the venues of this year’s great manufactured home shows. Irving Berlin said it first about the Greatest Show on Earth, but there’s no reason why it can’t apply to these Industry Shows as well: the HOMExpo 2011, billed as the Only Factory Built Housing Show in the Northeast Region, and the 2011 Great Southwest Home Show, the Biggest Indoor Home Show:

There’s no business like [MH] show business
Like no business I know
Everything about it is appealing
Everything the traffic will allow…
Let’s go on with the show
Let’s go on with the show!
The show!
The show!

Scheduling these Industry shows in the first four months invigorates and motivates, inspires and propels the vendors and attendees – professionals and public alike – to fresh enthusiasm for the remaining eight months of the year. Fresh enthusiasm for the excellent product we call factory-built homes: HUD code manufactured, modular, panelized… Fresh appreciation for the Industry pros you can meet in person, for the seminars and workshops, the products and services that surround and support these homes and the variety of locations in which they can be sited. Fresh enthusiasm for buyer-affordability and vendor-profitability in what can be an Industry Turn-around Year!

Which shows did you attend and/or will you be attending? What features were most helpful for you and your business? What didn’t happen that you would like to see included in next year’s shows? MHMSM.com would like to hear from you on these subjects. Use our Discus system to leave a public comment at the bottom of this article, or email Tony@MHMSM.com or Catherine@MHMSM.com for a private one. We respect your privacy, and share names/contact information when you give permission to do so.

Speaking of winners and Industry pros who always make their shots, let’s get to our new line-up of Featured Articles and Reports! This month we introduce our Featured Articles according to Subject Category, listed alphabetically. We hope by doing so to optimize your time with us by allowing you to more quickly identify a topic that interests you. We also welcome four new contributors this month: Mark Hunter, Tracey C.
