The Three Letters that Unlocks Manufactured Housing’s Answers

September 4th, 2017 No comments

Whoever you are.

Whatever you do.

Whatever brought you here.

Whatever your political, economic, religious, ethnic, or other perspectives happen to be.

Three letters turn a key that unlocks the answers for manufactured housing investors and professionals.

Conceal, Reveal and ‘the Deal…’

Understanding the facts and opportunities unlocked by those three letters could lead to robust new HUD Code manufactured home sales growth.

That growth would positively impact retailers, communities, producers, lenders, suppliers, and all others who serve the public in manufactured housing.  What are those three letters?

Why? Credits, MHProNews/Pixabay.

When there are millions of Americans who need affordable housing, why did manufactured housing finish 2016 with only some “81,169” new HUD Code manufactured homes shipped?

HUD’s 2017 Worst Case Housing report points to nearly as many housing units needed today as the total number of pre-HUD Code mobile homes and post HUD Code manufactured homes in existence today. Those 8.3 million don’t count the millions more renting, 85 percent of whom want to own and could qualify for a residential style manufactured home.

When real estate agents can’t keep enough affordable housing in stock, why did manufactured housing grow at only 15% 2016 compared to 2015?

The Manufactured Housing Industry (MHI) has touted the fact that the manufactured housing industry for many years was about 21 percent of all new single family housing starts. Hmmm, okay. So, Why does MHI accept being at only some 9 percent of single family housing starts today?

Why did Richard A “Dick” Jennison – President and CEO of the MHI – say in reply to a softball question in the video below that “I don’t think that we [manufactured housing industry] should grow too fast,’ so that it gets…out of control” – out of who’s control? Who or which operation(s) benefit from slow industry growth?

When there are MILLIONS of affordable housing units needed, Why should the industry settle for less than 100,000 new homes, and modest growth?

  • Why not half-a-million new manufactured homes annually, or more?
  • Why should RVs – an optional purchase – outsell manufactured homes by some 5 to 1, when homes are a necessity?
  • Why did Jennison get his contract extended by MHI after he made this straight-faced statement on the video above? What would happen to an National Association of Realtors (NAR) or National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) president if they would have said something similar?

These are quotes or close paraphrases of statements made by Richard Cordray, CFPB’s director. They would have been helpful for MHI to make their case to get Preserving Access passed. MHProNews created the graphic above to support the effort. Why didn’t MHI ever use it? Why didn’t MHI make a similar graphic or similar arguments? Why don’t they want to debate their own effectiveness? Could it be that they don’t want to have to answer serious, reasonable questions? Why not debate their wisdom and effectiveness?

If they really want to see the Preserving Access to Manufactured Housing Act passed, Why hasn’t Lesli Gooch, Ph.D. – MHI SVP for Government Affairs & Chief Lobbyist – or anyone at MHI gotten permission to use the graphic above, or create a properly attributed one of their own like it?

Why not use Richard Cordray’s own talking points to advance the Preserving Access bill they claim to want enacted into law? (See quotes/graphic above.)

Why won’t MHI release their bylaws, which an MHI board member told MHProNews is required by law?

Why won’t MHI discuss the alleged conflict of interest for the largest lenders in the industry setting the agenda that most favors their own company?

If they are confident, why won’t MHI agree to publicly debate via video their performance and success, on their own claimed agenda?

Why won’t MHI debate their effectiveness?

When Lesli Gooch and the MHI leadership know that Keith Ellison plans to lead a charge against Preserving Access – as her own written statement below makes clear – why didn’t MHI denounce racism?  Why isn’t MHI being pro-active instead of reactive?  Why not -when as prior chairman, Nathan Smith said in a video statement – that MHI must make being proactive part of their standard?

Each of those lodging allegations discussion on this page are reported in the Daily Business News post, click image above.

Smith’s point is interesting. Especially given MHI’s history of being reactive, per prior chair Smith, why did Gooch and MHI’s leadership fail to condemn racism? Especially Why – given the fact that Ellison, and 3 other Democratic Congressional leaders – have signed onto a letter to the CFPB and the Department of Justice that alleges racism on the part of MHI’s dominant companies (Berkshire Hathaway units Clayton Homes, Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance, 21st Mortgage Corp)?  Why don’t see that opponents of MHI’s bill may again use racism as a charge against them, as they did in the 2015 congressional session?

These Democratic lawmakers have raised the issue of racism with respect to the companies that dominate MHI. MHProNews is the first in the Industry to notify industry readers that the Center for Accountability, about two weeks ago, put out a press release that they are pursuing this racism, steering and predactory lending issue. MHProNews asked MHI’s leadership about this, asking them to reject racism. After several days, they have not yet done so. Now, MHI’s SVP Lesli Gooch admits that Rep. Ellison is opposing the MHI Preserving Access bill. Will any thinking person be surprised if Ellison, the CfA or others accuse MHI’s leadership of racism?  Why would MHI hesitate a second to reject racism?

Why didn’t Lesli Gooch’s letter to State Association Executives (shown below), include a reference to the various groups – including, but not limited to, the three below – which are targeting their bill, with allegations of racism, and more?

  • Consumer Financial Protection Bureau CFPB
  • Democratic lawmakers
  • Center for Accountability (CfA)

The first three hot links were added by MHProNews and where made bold, so that those who want to dig deeper can quickly access more information.  but all of the text below is by Gooch to state association executives…who, by the way, are NOT “MHI State Executive Directors.”

Is there much doubt that many state associations are dominated by the same forces that dominate MHI? That said, state associations do not belong to MHI. They are not technically MHI state association executives, as Gooch opened her letter. Some executives resent that kind of address of MHI to them, as independent organizations.

Subject: Federal Legislative Update

Hi MHI State Executive Directors,

I wanted to update you about some upcoming action in the House of Representatives on the two issues that we focused on during the MHI legislative fly-in. In June, MHI members went to the Hill to: (1) support H.R. 1699, the Preserving Access to Manufactured Housing Act and (2) Stop HUD’s expansion of the regulation of manufactured housing beyond, and often contradictory to, the statute – on issues like garages, carports, frost free foundation requirements, and on-site completion of construction. Attached is our “asks” document from the fly-in.

As soon as next week, we expect both of these issues to come up on the House floor when the Fiscal Year 2018 appropriations package (H.R. 3354 – The Make America Secure and Prosperous Appropriations Act) is considered. We will know more about timing next Tuesday – while it was scheduled to come up next week we anticipate the Hurricane will likely push the timing back.

First, the language of the Preserving Access to Manufactured Housing Act is included in the underlying appropriations text that is being brought to the House floor. Rep. Ellison (D-MN) has filed an amendment with the Rules Committee to strike this language from the bill. We are advocating with the Rules Committee to decline his request to offer the amendment during House debate on the bill – as they did when he tried to strike our language out of Chairman Hensarling’s Financial CHOICE Act (H.R. 10).

Second, Rep. Barr has filed an amendment with the Rules Committee regarding HUD’s expansion of regulations on garages/carports; frost-free foundations; and on-site completion of construction. Here is the link to the amendment: These issues were raised in a bipartisan letter to HUD Secretary Ben Carson (see attached). We are working to ensure the House Rules Committee agrees to allow the amendment to be offered during House debate on the bill.

We will keep you posted as things move forward. We plan to send out a grassroots call to action when we have a better sense of timing.

What’s Wrong is that We Don’t Ask What’s Right

In the video collage below, is a brief clip of ROC USA president Paul Bradley explaining “cohesion,” a point that MHI Financial Services Committee chairman Dick Ernst speaks about cohesion in the same video, noting its importance.

Bradley’s point is akin to Marty Lavin’s argument that notes the manufactured housing industry’s “other image campaign.”  Lavin’s meaning is that the negative news that is so common from the mainstream media – which Lavin has explained must be dealt with.  When the national association for years has not refuted the negatives that manufactured housing industry is often hit with, why would savvy home buyers invest?

To see what some other industry professionals have said about the pending MHI image campaign, click the image above.

Yet as Frank Rolfe and others have blasted MHI for their poor communications in defending the industry, or even promoting the industry.

Why should MHI and their dominant companies be in charge of a planned industry image campaign? Why – or how could they possibly lead – when MHI’s own president has advocated publicly – more than once – that growth should be slow?  See Jennison’s statement in the roughly 20 second video above.

When Clayton and Cavco’s own published numbers indicate that they are growing at a pace somewhat slower than the industry at large, why should they call the shots for everyone else?

Using MHI’s numbers, Cavco stated the above. Per MHI, the industry grew 15% 2016 over 2015. What that means is that Clayton and Cavco are growing at a somewhat slower pace in sales than the industry at large. Based upon those facts, why should those two companies dictate the course of MHI’s future, or their planned image campaign?

Why doesn’t MHI address the concerns, such as the allegation by a long-time member that – “the big companies [that dominate MHI] have figured out how to get the smaller and mid-sized companies [members of MHI] to pay for what they [the big companies] want” – why won’t MHI answer that or other legitimate questions and concerns?

We could go on and on with questions like the ones above.

For a story on Google and other monopoly concerns, and their impact on manufactured housing, click here or the image above. Photo by MHProNews, of the classic Monopoly game.  The longtime Parker Bros game product is now produced by Hasbro.

But let’s draw to a close today by saying, that after years of failures and disconnects, Why should MHI be trusted by anyone not a part of their inner circle?

MHARR is exploring expanding their membership.

Other company leaders have touched-based with MHProNews, saying they are exploring doing the

  • networking meetings,
  • trade shows,
  • promotion,
  • education,
  • post-production lobbying,
  • instead of MHI.

There are estimates that for less money than MHI spends, more could be done – and done more effectively – to Protect, Educate and Promote (PEP) the industry.

A leading MH state association exec’s mantra we love to share.

MHLivingNews and MHProNews are prepared to support intelligent efforts to supplant what MHI does.

Why not let the big companies keep their big boys club?

Why not let there be an association that works on behalf of everyone else?

MHI Executive Committee Member Emails MHProNews, Sam Zell’s Comment$

August 26th, 2017 No comments

A few days ago, an MHI Executive Committee member sent an email, which he asked that it be treated as not for publication. We respect the request, replied late yesterday afternoon, and made a like request about our message to them.

The Masthead blog on MHProNews makes no predictions about this. Just an FYI to the MH Industry.

#War #Peace #AmericanEagle

The seal of the United States bears the image of an eagle. One talon grasps arrows, the other an olive branch.  That speaks volumes.

War? Peace? “Don’t Tread On Me.” “From the Many, One.” These are just some of the lessons of America’s historic success, part of the American Way.

That’s the real American Way.

For the believers in the audience, recall that Jesus overturned the tables of the money changers.  Why?  Because those leaders were “thieves” who were cheating and misleading the people.

We won’t rehash the numerous quotes from MH Industry pros – several of whom are MHI members – published two days ago. It’s ‘read hot.’

Instead, we will remind readers about what other Industry pros said on the record, in the captioned images in today’s Masthead blog commentary.  “We Provide, You Decide © if the commentary and quotes all fit, and make sense to you.

On the record quote to MHProNews. Graphic by MHProNews.  It should be noted that the quotes by third parties, like the one shown above, were not provided with this specific Masthead post in mind.  Readers will need to discern for themselves if the statements shown fit the facts, allegations, and concerns about MHI.

We Provide, You Decide.” © is one of MHProNews’ long standing slogans.

Texas Hurricane Tragedy

There are not enough words to capture what millions will be going through in the next few days.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those whose lives are impacted.  Especially so, with the forgotten and marginalized.

Manufactured Home Necessity, Potential

Why won’t MHI admit the obvious disconnect between what Chairman Tim Williams (21st Mortgage) accurately said, and what Warren Buffett has said – which are polar opposites?

The truth about MHI is in several ways hiding in plain sight. But the MHProNews exclusively obtained document from Tim Williams speaks volumes. Click here to see the brief, yet powerful, report.

L. A. “Tony” Kovach is one of the most popular speakers in the manufactured home industry, yet MHI – sometimes through surrogates or by applying pressure on others – has systematically, allegedly, attempted to keep Kovach from addressing the industry’s members. That said, they can’t silence the industry’s leading trade publication, which you are reading.

At MHProNews and MHLivingNews, we have a unique vantage point because:

  • we hear from MH Industry members across the spectrum,
  • we work with industry pros across the spectrum,
  • we speak and listen to the public,
  • we communicate with investors – foreign and domestic,
  • we engage with media,
  • engage with experts,
  • engage with advocates,
  • engage with public officials and politicos,
  • we research, and
  • we fact check.

The industry has its biggest opportunities ever. The need in America for manufactured housing has never been greater. As Daily Business News readers know, in Australia, manufactured homes are in some ways advancing better there than here, yet this is an American invention.  There would be widespread agreement on these points.

So where has “MHI’s leadership” been during this time of a growing affordable housing crisis?

Isn’t there an obvious conflict of interest between 21st Mortgage and Vanderbilt Mortgage (both Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway companies) not providing data to the GSEs, and yet MHI claiming that they want the GSEs to do chattel loans?

Why won’t MHI publicly say what’s going on with moves like Lois Starkey leaving MHI, and ending up at HUD?

Yes, the industry is growing, and we should be happy about it, but we should be unhappy with how low the total sales volume is at a retail center, a community and the industry at large. When you look at the bulk of the mainstream media accounts, isn’t Tom Fath correct? Isn’t the industry under attack? Where is MHI’s defense of the industry?

Why won’t MHI call for Pam Danner’s removal from the HUD Code Manufactured Housing Program office? Isn’t it a farce to say they want HUD to back off on regulatory overreaching, when they won’t call for Danner – who approves those moves – to leave the HUD MH program Office?

This image above appeared on the business website shown, and was modified to fit this page. When HUD’s own data proves that manufactured homes have their best quality ever, why is Danner pushing for more and costlier regulations? Why isn’t MHI calling for Danner’s replacement, asap? Click above for more details.

If MHI were right on the issues, why won’t they answer questions on the record?  With us?  With mainstream media?

Doug Gorman’s location was bought out by Clayton Homes, so can we still expect the multiple MHI award winner to speak out against MHI’s failure about asking for the replacement of Pam Danner?

We’ve challenged MHI senior staffers to a public, via video debate. Aren’t they confident enough to do so? What are they afraid of admitting publicly anyway?

We routinely give MHI a chance to comment, they hide behind no comment.  How can they claim to be ready to promote the industry, when they won’t defend it when wrongfully attacked?

MHI’s advertorials – often issued under Richard A. “Dick” Jennison’s name – have been a mix of useful and problematic claims. Some of their statements have drawn harsh criticism, like the example by Titus Dare, above.

Why does the inner circle there act, as an MHI board member told us, like a “secret society” – with only a few “in the loop,” and the rest of their members expected to go along?

Ross Kinzler was right, Washington D.C. picks winners and losers.

See Ross Kinzler, Donald Tye Jr., and other professional’s  comments in the story linked above.

But let’s ask a question.  Doesn’t MHI literally and figuratively do the same?

Photo credit, Marty Lavin. The use of these quotes here does not imply that the quote was requested for this specific commentary. Industry readers will have to judge if the quotes selected make sense in the context that this is being presented in.

After years of the same, why should the industry trust MHI?

What did they do for North Carolina when local media body slammed them with a pair of digital cheap shots?

They sent Rick Robinson to testify in Ohio, and loaned them ‘engage,’ both of which were token efforts. Losing the Ohio Manufactured Home Commission battle wasn’t a mere local issue.  IMHO, it was a significant setback for the industry. MHI failed to do whatever it takes to back up OMHA’s Tim Williams, when the state association and their state consumer group were officially on the same page.

How could MHI let that happen?

Editorial comments should not be construed as representing the views of parties that may be named. For example, OMHA’s Tim Williams specifically thanked MHI for their help. That said, your Masthead blogger asks – why didn’t MHI do whatever was necessary to win such an important fight?

But aren’t those just 2 of numerous examples of MHI doing little or nothing? What about

The list could go on and on. MHI can say whatever they like about their plans for an image campaign. Lavin’s points on that speak volumes.

Consider what an MHI veteran said to MHProNews, that “the big companies have figured out how to get the little companies to pay for what they want.”

Ouch. Lavin’s point on follow the money and pay attention to what people do more than what they say ought to be shining in bright lights.

Dick Jennison, Lesli Gooch and others at MHI have made repeated, unforced errors – and aren’t  they routinely harmful to the industry? Yes, their allies don’t like the analysis, but if they could defend it, why don’t they?

Goal and Solution Orientation

There are individual players who have reached out to us to explore replacing MHI and those in league with them.

Specifically, we’ve been asked about organizing:

  • trade shows – that would be both wholesale and public events,
  • networking events,
  • educational meetings, and
  • industry advocacy.

We are interested in learning more about their efforts and ideas and are open to supporting them, but have not yet made a commitment. Note MHARR is considering expanding, but no decisions there have been made.

Stating the obvious. There’s no good reason the Masthead on MHProNews can see for supporting or keeping MHI. Let the big boys have their club.

Why not let all the others have their own association, one that fights for their interests? One that promotes the industry, instead of silently undermining it?

Have you seen any clue that MHI is willing to reform?  While I’m happy to be wrong, and would gladly admit it, I’m not holding my breath over the message exchange noted at the top.

Somebody, please, show me something MHI does that isn’t or couldn’t be done better by others??

MHI has their stated and secret plans. Do you think their plans include you and your organization’s winning?

Why feed the hands that bites or fails yours?

Howard Walker, ELS Vice Chair, MHI Executive Committee, and Multi-Billion Dollar Industry Questions

July 31st, 2017 No comments

Subsidized housing is a way of tipping the scales against the free-market solution offered by HUD Code manufactured homes.

Not enforcing enhanced preemption established by law under the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000 (MHIA 2000) is clear evidence of HUD failing to do its lawful duty. It’s one of several clear reasons to immediately replace Pam Danner, JD, as head of the HUD Code manufactured housing program.

This image above appeared on the business website shown, and was modified to fit this page. When HUD’s own data proves that manufactured homes have their best quality ever, why is Danner pushing for more and costlier regulations? Click above for more details.

Any industry professional, company, or association that fails to support:

•      a change away from Pam Danner as head of the HUD Code manufactured housing program, or

•     who don’t want to investigate why Lois Starkey separated from the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI), and now is at HUD’s MH Program office,

is logically either:

•     apathetic,

•     misinformed,

•     naïve,

Click the collage graphic above to see Doug Gorman’s reasons for saying that Pam Danner, a personal friend of his, ought to be moved out of her current role at HUD.

•     or is hiding something.

The topic for today was specifically requested by an active and ranking MHI member.  That person and others in or out of that group’s body have requested something similar. A number of the questions/allegations/points of concern listed were made by MHI members.

Questioning the organization and its impact on the industry – for good or ill – should not be construed as attacking individual member companies, or people.

Before diving into questions/concerns to ask yourself about MHI, let’s state a pair of fair and balanced facts.

A)      The vast majority of the people and operations involved in MHI are good folks, fine operations.

B) Industry gatherings, meetings and events are routinely pleasant, and offer various networking benefits.

In the real world, things are rarely all darkness or light. Thus, the biblical admonition to separate ‘wheat from chaff.’

Discerning professionals, researchers, media, and investors must separate those A-B positive truths, from the questions below.

Note too that it’s possible to accomplish the A-B value noted above within MHI, or outside of it.

Discernment – Ask Yourself These Questions About Allegations and Concerns Regarding MHI

In no particular order of importance:

1) Why hasn’t MHI informed its members on its position about Pam Danner, JD, and what’s behind the separation of Lois Starkey and Ton Heinemann?

2) Isn’t it obvious that if MHI wanted to see Danner removed, they would have already publicly come out and said so?

3) Why does MHI not defend the industry against false claims made by the mainstream media, or by activist anti-MH business groups?

4) Why didn’t Warren Buffett call then President Barack Obama, and ask him to have Richard Cordray support the changes sought in Preserving Access to Manufactured Housing? Wouldn’t that have saved MHI and the industry millions of dollars and untold hours of failed lobbying efforts?

Several media outlets picked up on the story first broken on MHProNews about the dismissal of Vice Presidents Lois Starkey Tom Heinemann Manufactured Housing Institute MHI Dismissed

5) Why did key MHI member/companies de facto derail the Duty to Serve (DTS) process with FHFA and the GSEs, while the association claimed to be working for its robust enactment?

6) Why didn’t MHI ask FHFA or the GSEs to release the minutes of private meetings? What are they hiding?

7) Why did MHI first support the business and job killing positions it initially took on DOE regulations? Why did it only change positions after months of third party pressure on the DOE proposal they supported?

8) Why has MHI allegedly misinformed its own members on a variety of issues?

9) Why won’t MHI release its own bylaws to its own members, or prospective members? Where’s the logic? What are they hiding?

10) Sam Zell is one of many who has noted that big companies are better able to sustain heavy regulations than smaller firms. Then isn’t it reasonable to presume that if MHI fails to get regulatory relief – for whatever reasons – that the end result is more smaller companies will be “consolidated” into larger ones?

11) Why has MHI not warned its members about the possible protests by anti-industry activist groups – that may disrupt the MHI annual meeting?

12) Is your company feeding a hand that undermines your firm’s and the public’s best interests?

Manufactured Housing Industry on Threat Issue – From, About – MHI, MHI Members and Supporters

April 21st, 2017 No comments

The feedback cited and published below were deliberately limited to those from MHI members, meeting attendees and their supporters.

That should make this information more relevant to association members, MHI senior staff, and the association’s elected leaders.

The messages shown came in, sometimes just minutes after they received their copy of the issues highlighted in the last emailed news update, linked here.

Screen capture of email dated 4.20.2017, click the graphic above or this link here to see the article that the MHI senior staff and executive committee where asked to condemn. To see the that complete newsletter, click here.

Here below was the message sent to each of the MHI Executive Committee members, a nearly identical one also was sent to senior MHI staff.

Screen capture of emailed message to MHI senior staff, and all four of the MHI Executive Committee members. The meat of the text is found in italics below, for ease-of-reading.

“Addressing you in your role as an MHI Executive Committee member, please review the article linked below, highlighted in yellow with red text.  Kindly email me for our accuracy in quoting, your replies to the questions below.

1)   Do you think that the allegedly illegal act of misuse of the U.S. Postal Service, extortion and intimidation – one that names MHI, and claims to be acting to defend MHI – ought to be condemned by MHI?

2) Should any illegal behavior be tolerated by the industry?  Should MHI have a policy towards allegations of illegal behavior in the industry?

3)   If one or more ties to MHI and/or officials at HUD are determined to exist, will you condemn that and seek appropriate remedies for that?

Again, your on-the-record reply for accuracy on the item linked below is appreciated.

FYI – interested industry parties are bcc’d in this message.

Thank you…”

Taking Note

As noted in the message, a handful of industry members with MHI were BCC’d in each, some of their replies came only to me, others were ‘reply all,’ which means that the executive committee member(s) so responded to saw that person’s response.

To see the article, click the image above or click here.

Early Industry Feedback from those BCC’d, etc.

Keep up the heat Tony!”

Wow. Crazy!! We live in crazy times. Keep up the good work!!” (This is an example of a reply from a bcc that included the executive committee member who was addressed).

The people in charge do what they want to do regardless of effect on the industry.”

Good lord! Never a dull moment at MHProNews, huh?

This kind of garbage happens every day in the world.  Some individuals will stoop to the lowest levels without blinking an eye.”

Looked this over.  Not that any of it is necessarily wrong, but it is highly inflammatory.”

These individuals are worthless; even if they have dirt on others.”

Messages Included Comments, Information and Insights – Example

A link to a mainstream media article about manufactured home communities was sent, which notes that MHC are producing returns about 10% higher than apartments, along with the some pithy points. That writer’s potent statement/observation is this – that artificially low volume reduces the value of communities – and applies beyond communities to factories, retail centers, suppliers, and others.

That comment begs the question: are some associated with MHI using their position(s) of influence to deliberately hold the industry’s advancements back, precisely to keep potential acquisition opportunities up, and purchase prices down? Independent businesses of all sizes, are you catching the gist of that, and how it impacts YOU and YOUR business?

Some Had Questions, A Common Example

I’m not sure I understand what happened. Someone sent you a package of potentially embarrassing material, and threatened to go public with it if you didn’t stop publishing negative stuff about MHI. But it wasn’t about you or anyone affiliated with your company? So who was it about and why would it be an inducement to back down?

So now, you are reaching out to MHI to condemn such tactics, and you have reason to believe that parties at MHI and/or HUD are in some way connected with the sending of this envelope?”

My reply to the above is shown in italics as follows:

“Good question,
The cover was addressed to me, as team leader of MHProNews.

The contents actually had nothing to do with MHProNews – per se.  It was about third parties to our organization.  The apparent/alleged goal is to cause our ‘feelings’ (so to speak) for another(s) to keep us from doing more exposes of MHI.

We advised the third party, so they could prepare.  Then, we published what you see.

Whoever is behind it, what makes this sinister, is they could do this to ANYONE.  Got something you’d not want revealed on someone’s website?  Don’t we all?

…As you may have guessed by now, I don’t take kindly to threats.”

Copy of the envelope mailed anonymously to MHProNews, included written threats sent by U.S. Mail, which may violate federal laws. If you’ve not yet read the Daily Business News report, click here.

Individual Answers to All Not Possible

Due to volume and time demands, my apologies, but we simply can’t answer all messages. We do read them, and try to cover topics periodically on the Masthead that in fact answers common – or even unique – inquiries from readers.

It should be noted that some readers, perhaps inspired by what they are seeing, are sharing their own experiences and/or documents.  This in turn may result in further reports on issues those reader-responses have raised.

Regarding Questions About Law Enforcement on the Alleged Threat/RICO issue

Frankly, your Masthead writer needs more feedback from legal minds about what we’ve heard so far, what should and should not be said, so I’ll keep my comments for now limited to this.

Based upon the questions/implications from law enforcement to this point, my impression is the feds have software that lets them scour the web for possible links to such alleged crimes as is represented by the package and its contents.

Wrap up for Today

As of this posting, no response from any MHI senior staff, nor yet from an executive committee member. We will keep investors, the industry, public officials and other who monitor this website and the Masthead appraised as circumstances warrant. ##

Frank, Frustrations, and Free Enterprise February in MHLand, 2017

February 6th, 2017 No comments

Let’s be frank.  As nice as a roughly 15% growth of 2016 over 2015 is, manufactured housing could be several times larger than its current annual shipment rates.

The Trump Administration which is touting more pro-business postures, offers the manufactured housing industry an amazing opportunity.

Will the free enterprise solutions to the affordable housing crisis – that manufactured homes uniquely offers – be capitalized upon?

Stay tuned…

No one in media or trade publishing covers prefab, modular and manufactured housing in as much depth and frequency as MHProNews and MHLivingNews do.  We are also by far the most read, and most trusted source for Industry News Tips and Views Pros Can Use.  ©

Every segment of the factory-crafted home market should periodically step back and see the broader picture.

Those in MHLand ought not overlook the rising role of modular housing in the marketplace, many do get it now.

The reverse is also true.  Each side of factory-built homes represents a vital option for housing seekers.

Image and negative news holds the MH industry back. But that’s an educational issue, as Chet Murphree and James McGee said on camera over a year ago. We now know that the 2016 new MH shipment totals were over 80,000.  But that is still a shadow of what the industry produced in the 90s or early 2000s. Given the affordable housing crisis, many may see the potential to hit 300,000 or 400,000 or even 500,000 annual shipments can be done in a sustainable fashion.  That will occur more rapidly when systemic changes are made by serious manufactured home players, acting on the local and regional levels.

In some ways, modular construction faces fewer stigmas, something that exclusive modular producers and their associations often highlight. Oh, that they would see the wisdom for uplifting all facets of factory-built homes.  It’s a wiser path for all. MODs and HUDs ought not to be I conflict, they ought to complement each other.  It’s doable, factually, as this linked video interview demonstrates.

Currently HUDs far outpace SF modular production.  But that could change, and if more large modular projects with MF use are considered, the who is the larger segment of factory crafted homes question deserves a closer look.

As the weekend Masthead commentary on the Rolfe Blasts MHI report reflected, it’s not about blasting for the sake of attack.  Its about identifying patterns of activity, and how they can be improved, for the benefit of all. The screen capture above is from the Daily Business News, click here or above to see that read, red hot report.

The frustrations of what holds back the industry are self-evident.  Frank Rolfe said it well when he stated, “Probably the greatest enemy to the growth of the mobile home park industry into a mainstream form of real estate investment is … our industry itself.”  That’s true, not only for the community sector, but for the reset of factory built housing – HUD Code and modular.

But there are external challenges aplenty. This months featured articles reflect the obstacles and opportunities that exist.  There are news reports, products, events, services and more in store in dozens of February articles listed below.

As we noted in the weekend Masthead, it is long past due for the industry’s various voices to sit down and candidly, privately sort out how to create more cohesion and inclusion.  This writer tried for over a year privately to address issues that finally needed to go public.  Perhaps, under the growing scrutiny of industry voices like Rolfe’s and others, the players will take the prudential steps necessary.

Until then and beyond, MHProNews and our sister site, MHLivingNews marches on.

Knowledge is potential power, and promoting knowledge is powerful too. So, with no further adieu, the Featured Articles and Reports for Frank, Frustrations, and Free Enterprise February in MHLand, 2017 are below.

MHAction Disrupting Manufactured Housing Industry Business as Usual

January 5th, 2017 No comments

Let’s look at a pattern that is hiding in plain sight.  This pattern has and is being used to disrupt the manufactured housing industry.

If we as professionals fail to define ourselves and our operation(s), then others will define us – often to our disadvantage.

When enterprises like yours or ours are harmed, that will routinely negatively impact millions of current and potentially future manufactured home owners.

Let’s consider recent examples.

There are a growing number of operations and groups that are akin to MHAction, which recently teamed up with left-of-center activists to undermine private equity’s role in manufactured home (MH) communities.

MHAction is just one of several possible examples. They are recruiting members in manufactured home communities. Frank Rolfe and Dave Reynold lead RV Horizons and Equity LifeStyle Properties (ELS) are but two examples of groups that MHAction has targeted.  Note, we defended ELS, though they aren’t an MHProNews client. This is about facts, and industry solidarity. We strive in principle to act in the best interests of the industry, which ought to be the role of a pro-industry trade publisher.

Media-Based Attack on Investor-Owned Communities = ’The Private Equity Takeover of America’s Neighborhoods’

On the West Coast, another activist group recently worked to pass Measure V in California.

NPR’s All Things Considered ‘report’  (actually, Todd Lamb is right, it’s thinly disguised advocacy) by Daniel Zwerdling, entitled “Mobile Home Park Owners Can Spoil An Affordable American Dream” is another example of media being used to target manufactured housing, in that case, communities.

But in 2015 and 2016, it was the Seattle Times – which frequently acted in concert with others like the Center for Public Integrity and BuzzFeed News – to attack industry giant Clayton Homes and their sister operations in MH lending.

Click the image shown to see the video and report.

The Common Thread?

Tim Williams, 21st Mortgage CEO and MHI Chairman.

These activist groups have common threads, and Tim Williams of 21st Mortgage described that in a power point he gave MHProNews permission to share – but we’ll save that slide for another time, while making his key point.

Namely, that these self-described progressive groups have an agenda.

Those so-called progressives are often harming the very people they claim to help.

But they are so passionate – so dedicated to their cause and beliefs – that they simply never, never quit.

While some can be reasoned with, for others, the facts don’t matter to them, especially when the facts go counter to their beliefs.

Progressives claim to champion the poor and downtrodden, but in fact it’s often Big Government and Big Foundations that supply them with the money they need to do their activist work.

They’ve learned to utilize quite successfully local and Big Media to carry their messages.

And for years – decades – manufactured housing has taken it on the chin.  The easy way of not responding effectively is the hard and painful way.  Or as Sunshine Homes President John Bostick colorfully likes to say, “Easy doesn’t pay well.”

The proper approaches will yield serious growth. Proper media engagement is part of that picture, industry opponents use it, why can’t we use the media with the compelling truth? In a trillion dollar a year housing industry, to be between stuck 5 and 6 billion a year in new manufactured home sales seems low, doesn’t it?

Fool Me Once…

There is an old saying. “Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me.”

As professionals, we must be honest with each other. Manufactured housing professionals keep getting sucker punched.

There is a strong sentiment in the industry that somehow companies or associations that are attacked must often avoid publicly debating or defending our position effectively with the groups and media in question.

Jay is right, far better for the industry to call out truly bad actors, than for the entire industry to take it on the chin. Beyond that, we must also defend and explain cases that may look problematic, but may have a good explanation, so long as that reason is understandable. Credit, Facebook.

But There’s More…

cfpb-pseudo-logo-credit-plus1properties-posted-masthead-blog-mhpronews-com (1)

CFPB satire logo image credit by Plus 1 Properties.

Add to these disruptive anti-MH business activist groups and their allies in media, a veritable alphabet soup of federal, state and local agencies, which in recent years have swamped the ability of small businesses to enter, stay effectively or be as profitable as they would otherwise be in the marketplace.

Arrows and comments by MHProNews, Google search on the date and time shown.

That in turn hurts job creation, and costs every level of government tax revenues.  It also causes increased expenses by government, costs that could have been avoided in the absence of anti-business policies.

As is linked above and here again, federal dollars have gone to groups such as CFED, which in turn lobby media, federal, state or other entities in ways that may be well-intentioned, but in fact promote “solutions” that often (though not always) may be impractical or worse.

MH Action is targeting Frank Rolfe/Dave Reynolds led RV Horizon roughly number 6 among MH portfolio operators in number of home sites. These left wing groups often target the larger or biggest companies, the ones moving up, which in turn sends shock waves through others in the industry who may have no other connection other than the fact that they are in manufactured home communities, the MH Industry, etc.

He Went to Prison, But He Had a Point

James Watt, President Ronald Reagan’s U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 1981 to 1983, made an interesting observation.  He said that he didn’t believe in conspiracies most of the time.  What Watt did witness and believe in was people with common beliefs acting on those common beliefs in a way that may have looked conspiratorial.

But the result is almost the same.

Be it done cloak-and-dagger in smoke-filled rooms by design, or because people with common beliefs behave in common ways, they are de facto working in concert.

Why is Paul sending a thumbs up? What’s next to him on that end table?  For the answer, see the collage at the end of this post.

Paul Bradley told MHProNews a few years ago, that manufactured housing lacked cohesion.  Bradley was spot on then, and now.

IMHO, there are too many petty rivalries and turf-wars that harm all in the industry mix, because they limit what SSK’s Nathan Smith called our “boutique industry,” keeping it from reaching its full potential.

Reflection Should Lead First to Understanding…

Many in the center-right may believe that the left dominates in numbers, but that’s not true – nor has it ever been accurate.

Here’s proof.

To se the Gallup Poll data, click the image above credit, Epic of Evolution.  Let’s be clear, MHProNews has readers, sponsors, and friends from across the political spectrum.  We respect the rights of people to vote or act as they believe, within the bounds of ethics.  But we should all be engaged and act upon facts, not opinions. Some leftist thinking produces bad outcomes in the real world, just as some far right thinking can be problematic too.

The dominance of leftist thinking in:

  • academia (universities are often an arm of government),
  • the media and
  • in government results in what looks like an overwhelming majority.

In fact, it’s a minority that is influencing, manipulating, and controlling the center-right majority.

If you missed these two recent Masthead posts below, please find the time to review – because we are building on a series of principles, facts and realities that must be understood and acted upon for manufactured housing to achieve its potential.

Reflections are often useful, and while common at the end or start of a new year, ought to take place routinely. Image credits,

Reflection and Understanding should then lead to sound plans and action.

See R2D2, Seriously? Linked here or from the image above.

MHAction is just one of several operations that target manufactured housing professionals.  Make no mistake, in an industry of our size – an attack on one sector sadly – and avoidably – impacts and disrupts every part of our industry and profession.

Let me encourage Masthead readers to check out Paul Bradley, Todd Lamb, Kurt Kelley and Tim Williams‘ recent, thoughtful comments on the NPR related issue.

Also, look again at Congressman Dennis Ross’ statement on Dr. Ben Carson for the role of HUD Secretary.

Kindly check back here this weekend, when the new issue and our January 2017 featured articles will be live on the home page – ready to feed your mind – so that you and others can serve more, better – and thus boost your bottom line. ##

All time moves at precisely the same pace, yet we’ve all experienced time when it seems to move more slowly, or more rapidly.

For tens of millions, this time between Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s often seems to go by very quickly.  Jewish and Christian holidays, secular celebrations, shopping, gatherings, parties, and travel.

January 2017 will be upon us soon.

What will that new year bring?

Properly looking at history – recent and more long term actions – may offer clues.

But ultimately, each of us responds or reacts to the ebbs and flows of tide-like events.

The Washington Post and others reported that some 200 counties that voted for Barack Obama where switched to voting for Donald Trump. This election was status quo vs. shaking up the system. Trump significantly outperformed Romney with minorities. Trump attracted many blue-collar union voters, of all backgrounds. Millions believed that Trump would not be business as usual. Yet some on the left are trying to paint this as an election about “white nationalism;” what nonsense. The Masthead’s writer doesn’t know a single person who voted for Donald Trump who is racist, do you? As Democrat James Carville once quipped, “It’s the economy, stupid!”

E Pluribus Unum

From the Many, One.”  This is the translation of the Latin motto on much of U.S. money.

It is fair to say, along with the president-elect, that healing the nation – and what ails it – will take time.

Some are still in shock, having bought into their own or other’s oft-repeated narrative that the election was over before November 8th.  They believed that Secretary Hillary Clinton would be crowned by the many elites in media, arts, philanthropy, globalists, business and voters as our next president.

The elites weaved a tale on sensationalized facts, painting Donald J. Trump – and several of his key team members – as racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, homophobic, monsters and con artists with a terrible temperament that could only end in nuclear winter for the world.  To them, the GOP nominee had to be stopped.

Ronald Reagan’s oldest son, Michael, opposed Trump at various points in time, but now is coming around and seeing hope in moves like saving 1100 jobs at Carrier. Photo above – Ronald Reagan, left, Donald Trump, right, photo credit – People.

Perhaps part of the problem was that a similar play book was used by Democratic candidates against Republicans for many, many years – going back to at least the time of Ronald Reagan.

Once elected, did President Reagan bring us to nuclear winter? Hardly.  Instead, he brought us the end of the then Cold War, and along with faith-filled freedom seekers in Poland and elsewhere, brought about the fall of the Soviet Union and their Eastern European empire.

Back to events in this recent race.

It’s as if now President-elect Trump’s opponents went to see D’nesh D’Szoza’s movie – Hillary’s America – plus the Clinton Cash movie – got out their spin machine, and projected onto Trump all that those two video documented that the Clintons’ and their political machine were guilty of doing.

An “America First” – Hostile Takeover by a Populist…

To produce relevant and useful news, you first must absorb news. You always begin with more information than you can use, and select what frames and builds out a story well told that will be useful to readers.

presidentelecttrumpsupporters-postedmastheadblogmanufacturedhousingindustrydailybusinessnewsWe won’t look today at why and “how MHProNews got so much right on this past election” – as a regular reader put it – when so many in media got it so wrong.

We will note that Team Trump first beat successful, accomplished GOP rivals.  Then Trump’s unorthodox campaign upended his Democratic rival, all while beating much – not all – in the media.

It was akin to a hostile takeover in business, and Trump beat the elites in politics and the media at their own game.

By doing so, much has been exposed or brought into sharper focus.

The results will become known.

But we already have clues.

The first three weeks after Trump’s unprecedented victory left some in shock, denial and protesting.

Meanwhile, others are celebrating – including many in manufactured housing, as Warren Buffett, Sam Zell, Jim Clayton, Sam Landy, Mark Weiss, DJ Pendleton and Tim Connor – among others – have shared with us.

The markets have responded positively to what economists are calling a pro-growth agenda.

Are we about to enter what could be the most exciting time ever for professionals to tap the opportunities made possible by manufactured and modular housing?

2017 will be a true adventure; exciting.

The Louisville Show lies ahead, followed by the big Tunica Manufactured Housing Show.

With the White House, the House and Senate all under GOP control:

  • Will regulatory and tax policies be rapidly and favorably changed?
  • Will the border be secured?
  • Will the rule of law return?
  • Are you seeing the potential for anti-trust action by a Trump Administration?

Time will tell.

Count us among the prayerfully hopeful that a pro-growth, pro-business, pro-jobs protecting and creating era is about to be ushered in for the U.S.A.

With no further adieu, let’s look at what the Featured Articles and Reports for DAAD = Dramatic! Advent! Adventure! December 2016!
