Obstacles and Opportunities in Affordable Housing – October 2016

October 5th, 2016 No comments

The front lines of the struggles for affordable housing are a routine backdrop to the news, tips and commentary found on MHProNews.  Our industry’s professionals know the solution is hiding in plain sight.

What’s next? How does that message advance more broadly into the public sphere?

No one can fix or accept what is overlooked, ignored or is misunderstood.

So as professionals, we must begin with candid reality checks.

As we kick-off the start of our eighth year of industry-leading trade publishing — Volume 8, Issue 1 — our readers will discover below a cross-section of the issues that millions of people, plus

  • policy advocates,
  • public officials,
  • investors,
  • academics and
  • the media often focus on.

Ron Thomas, Sr.

Manufactured housing is a phenomenon!” RV/MH Hall of Fame inductee, Ron Thomas, Sr. has told MHProNews.

He is so right.

What we are privileged to bring you and others are the insights of seasoned veterans:

  • like Thomas and dozens of others — from rising stars to the
  • movers, shakers and legends in MH.

Those MHProNews interviews are among the featured articles, reports and posts that are linked below,

  • experts who have studied the industry, reported on,
  • the most third-party manufactured home owner video interviews — also found on,
  • facts and critical analysis on controversial issues,
  • living the promise of our tag line — “Industry News, Tips and Views Pros Can Use.” ©

There are reasons why thousands of industry pros from coast-to-coast logged on today, and do so every day.

There are reasons why the experts and leaders share their candid comments more with MHProNews than any other industry source.

We are unabashedly pro-business, pro-consumer, pro-association and believe in mutual victories as the model for industry advancement. We are also the source that spotlights and holds the industry’s pros accountable to the professional standards that most MH pros sincerely strive to live and aspire to daily.

We must learn how to be good story-tellers who define ourselves — or else others who are less informed will define us — often to the detriment of industry, the public and policy makers.

We are leading that charge. This is why we’ve been called “the voice of manufactured housing.”

But that voice, as you will see in the articles and interviews linked below, are the voices of pros like you.

We thank our sponsors, writers, team members and readers who’ve made this the industry’s one-of-a-kind trade media platform.

With your involvement, help and the inspiration of the One, we strive to drive the dialogue that will take manufactured housing to its best years ever.

With no further adieu, let’s dive into the featured articles, interviews past and present, reports and posts that begin year eight. ##

Serious September – Manufactured Housing Industry Newsmakers, Reports, Articles and Interviews

September 2nd, 2015 No comments

Serious September 2015. It could just as easily be named, how to Scale Success, or Sliding Sideways September.  Which of the later two it will be depends on how each of us views and responds to events and opportunities.  Before outlining our STRONG Serious September Featured Articles and Interviews line up, let me explain what I mean.

green-key-success-pc-free-digital-photos-net-mhpronews-com- (2)

We could use as an executive summary for the next few paragraphs below that Media Engagement by MH Matters, and that Engaging the Media as Media is Very Useful.

1) We spent the early part of the summer documenting MH potential and opportunities on  As with the rest of our content, you can still see and access those articles. June is here and July, linked here.  We could summarize it by saying that with rents rising, site-building through the roof (on costs…) and inventories of ‘affordable homes’ in short supply in many markets, MH has plenty of opportunities for a record rebound.

The reports, linked via the image above, were part of a hot, hot summer on MHProNews.

Dick Ernst, FinMark USA and Chariman of Financial Services division at MHI.

2) Among the reasons given for not rising higher in new home shipments than we have include financing and new regulations.  More on that shortly, but I’ll refer back to what Dick Ernst, now Chairman of MHI’s Financial Services Committee, has said.  There is no lack of capacity for our MH lenders to finance many more people, who are financially qualified. That could be rephrased as ‘we need to attract better credit customers,’ without ignoring providing the millions – who have no chance for a site built house – the opportunity to buy from us.

3) We have to broaden our industry’s base.  We have to attract the more credit qualified customers, without ignoring the traditional, affordable, entry-level side of our market.  There are retailers and MHCs who are doing it. That means, it can be done in your market too.  How do we do that, you ask?  Many ways, including through media and PR strategies.

Not Letting CFPB and their cheer leaders off the Hook

It is offensive to think MH pros can collectively do only one thing at a time well.  The people I know can walk, chew gum and carry on a cogent conversation all at once. En masse, there are tons we can do, together.

Any serious researcher is going to find what you see in the screen capture above. MHProNews, MHLivingNews and our other related media efforts are in-the-mix of the conversation on CFPB regulations and their impact on MH.

So while there absolutely has to be a focus on regulatory relief – that we support in word and deed – we ought not make that the one-and-only-thing needed for industry recovery.  Frankly, the regulatory relief sought is as much or more for those estimated 1.7 million households that have a home under 20k in value, as it is for professionals selling the industry’s pre-owned homes.

So we applaud the efforts of the national and state associations in MH that are working to correct those terrible ‘unintended consequence’ of Dodd-Frank. We’re doing more than cheering. We’re doing the meetings, the legislative outreaches, PLUS providing digital cover for the effort in the form of serious research that makes policy types and Senate staffers say (paraphrasing what a Democratic Senate staffer told me), Hey, that’s a pretty compelling argument.

Again, any serious researcher on Dodd-Frank and Manufactured Home Loan regulations will come across the MHProNews, MHLivingNews and our OpEd on The Hill Congress blog. We are woven into the conversation, which means that the REAL consumer and industry views are being presented.  Ditto someone checking out Doug Ryan/CFED comments, they are bound to find one or more of our articles that will correct the record, and are in favor of reforms sought by the MH Industry.

As further proof of the digital cover, Jan Hollingsworth’s latest column, “Renters’ Nation” has lit up since it was published.

Click here  to see this read hot, new story….

87 hours and 38 minutes after the above was published, Webalizer reports there were 42,917 hits on that one article In MH Land, that’s astonishing.

What has to be done now is to scale that outcome

If you want the CFPB and/or the Senate to agree to changes in MH regulations, let me repeat that: what we now have to do is scale that readership result cited above. Please share the link above to Jan’s article with your local editor, and with your  Congressional Rep, your 2 U.S. Senators and the CFPB.

Let’s put this total readership of Jan’s article into perspective.

Just because some publication may have a million readers, that doesn’t mean that each article is read.  Case in point.  We took respected and popular Forbes’ article, shown below.  On July 29th, 2014 on a hot subject, it had 6,701 views.  13 months later, you see that the total views on that article are now up to 7,732.   What that Forbes article has in views in 4 and 2/3rds years, Jan’s latest article accomplished in less than 4 days.

Do you recall when this was big news for a while in the media? Look at the actual views on the article, this screen capture dated 9.2.2015.  7, 732 total views.  It isn’t just how many see it, but who sees it an then acts upon it.  Credit – Forbes.

Side Show September?

Word has it from certain hot spots that some are already grumbling that we gave Frank Rolfe his right to free speech via a featured interview in this month’s issue.  Why would we, as a pro-MH publisher, allow Frank to be quoted as he shared it?

Wouldn’t you want to be quoted accurately?

To be taken seriously as trade media, we have to be fair and balanced, or we risk sliding into irrelevance.  We quoted Doug Ryan accurately too, and I’m not equating the two by any means. When we quote:

  • Jim Clayton, or
  • Nathan Smith, or
  • John Bostick, or
  • Mark Weiss, or
  • Dick Jennison, or whomever,

we ought to quote them accurately. And we do.

Indirectly Related – a Note of Caution

There are already whispers about the wisdom of MHI VP Rick Robinson and MHI Chairman Nathan Smith going to a stage in about a week, when the person providing the stage is said to be in conflict with MHI and the NCC.

As a matter of policy, we’ve allowed people to critique me and our publication, on our own pages.  So we do this very fairly.  I don’t have to agree or disagree with Frank on his statements regarding MHI and the NCC to protect his right to speak out on those subjects, even though it was not at all on our minds when we asked him the questions. We had no idea what Frank’s replies would be.

If MHI wants to respond, they are welcome to do so.  We are willing to share that response, publicly. Fair and balanced reporting. Period.

We Provide, You Decide.” ©

Something we strive diligently to avoid is any FALSE or errant statement (this, in contrast to an unpopular opinion).  When someone says there are 50,000 or 55,000 MHCs in the U.S. (for example), we’ll either want them to correct that number (that totals is likely more like 45,000, according to informed sources) or we would want to cut the statement entirely.

But that’s not what Frank Rolfe did.  Frank stated his views, and in no way shared a claim that is not grounded in a fact, though those facts can be understood in a variety of ways.

The issues raised by others of late are not new, and are not a side show.  They are on the minds of many in MH; we know, because we’ve heard them often enough.  Its just that this was the first time someone wanted to say so, on the record.

“We Provide, You Decide.” ©

Listening and Taking Correction Well

We had a nice message recently that praised our reporting and commentary work, but then included two typos that needed to be corrected (only 2? ;-).  The writer explained, he didn’t want the corrections to be taken the wrong way.  My rapid response was to make the corrections, and thank him.

An MHI staff officer also sent us a correction on a typo recently. Same outcome as the above.  We want to get the facts right.  We thanked the party.

We published the early comments on Jan’s article, one was that ‘it was long.’ We worked that perspective into the article, linked below.  My response?  I thanked the person for the comment.  That said, the challenge with what we face is in MH as an industry is that we’ve let too much stuff build up over the years, and now we need more than 800 words to dig ourselves out.  The fact that there are so many hits on Jan’s article so fast strongly suggests the content is ‘just right.’

You Can’t Please Everyone, All the Time…

Nor should that be our goal.  If everything was perfect in MHVille, then maybe we’d only need 300 to 400 word columns that all say, ‘everything’s great!’

The reality is there is work to do. Plenty of it. Grab a tool, and let’s get to it.  Failure to address the issues that nag us costs new MH sales.

Record Setting!

MHProNews had 5 days in August that topped 100,000 hits.  Again, in an industry our size, that’s amazing.  On On August 21st, Webalizer reported the daily count was 180,959 hits.  Our readers don’t have to like every article, for there to be value.

MH Professionals, enthusiasts, educators, media, government officials and investors are among the key groups reflected in software and stats. You and thousands of others have made us the runaway #1 place for MH Industry News Tips and Views Pros Can Use. ©

I explained to an industry leader recently that we publish bad news on the Daily Business News; we do so in part, because it happens; but also because when someone gets (for example) arrested for swindling down payments from a buyer, publishing that acts as a cautionary tale.  Good practices are often rewarded with success, while bad ones are discovered and punished.

When there is a controversy, we ought not ignore it, unless paying attention only fuels something that needs the oxygen removed.

In the matter of MHI/NCC and Frank Rolfe, MHI has to consider why they wanted him on stage, and then they need to consider what might happen if they fail to heed the cautionary note above about the upcoming non-association event.

My bet?  If Nathan Smith and Rick Robinson go to that fast approaching private event of an allegedly disgruntled member as planned, the day will eventually come when they wished they had opted not to do so.  That’s my two cents, they can take it or leave it.

But there should be no doubt that we want what’s good for the organization and good for the industry!  We prove that day by day, showcasing the good, and periodically reminding people there are issues to address that need mending.  You’re reading because you know what’s published here matters and has influence.

Intro for our Featured Articles, Reports and Interviews for September…

As we reported above, we had an August that set records.  When you see the incredible line up we have for our Featured Articles for September, perhaps you’ll agree that this month could set new records with readers like you.

  • We have 2 New Cup of Coffee with…interviews. Chris Parish and Dan Rinzema are featured in their own interviews, which many will find inspirational, useful and insightful.
  • These “Cuppa” interviews will be quite different than the interview with Frank Rolfe, who took some very tough questions put to him, and he responded in what will no doubt be seen by many in wave making ways.  We have no direct connection to Frank, so when I commend him for taking the tough questions we gave him head-on and in a timely fashion, that’s sincerely meant.  Others should think to consider that practice.
  • We have a video interview with Matt Webb, in what ought to be a must-view for anyone interested in improving their management and bottom lines, especially in the MH Community sector, but frankly useful beyond that realm too.
  • We have 4 columns by 5 respected attorneys; you’ll see their important topics that can protect your business, below.
  • We have 2 unique reports on how the new Appraisal Rule roll out is going, with our related MH Industry Survey results coming out soon.
  • There is New York Housing Association’s upcoming regional trade show and educational event.
  • Researching Manufactured Housing Industry Personalities, Organization’s and Topics.
  • A look at the hot early response to Renters’ Nation, the Dark Side of Dodd-Frank’s Impact on MH.
  • Ken Haynes Jr. sounds off on a recent media report.
  • AIA celebrates their 15th anniversary, kudos to them and check out their press release.
  • There are 2 inspirational/motivational articles.
  • Certainly not least for anyone who wants to close more sales, there are videos and an article on reputation management.

With no further adieu, let’s jump into this month’s new Featured Articles, Interviews and Reports.

MH’s A.M. in Magnificent May

May 3rd, 2015 No comments

Social media has changed mainstream journalism. We hear reporters and news anchors routinely talking about someone’s Tweet, or about a post on Facebook. A video on YouTube may be cited in a commentary. There are bloggers who blog, and journalists often blog now too. Welcome to A.M. – the “Alternative Media” – and where it intersects with the mainstream media.

Let’s briefly see what AM means to Manufactured Housing in Magnificent May 2015.

Word cloud credit – Peekaboo.

When I ask a room filled with MH pros, “Do media accounts relating to our Industry impact your sales, notably on issues like tornado coverage?” Usually almost every hand go up. So we know the media impacts perceptions and thus our MH sales, for good or ill.

Yet many of those perceptions are skewed at best, or are agenda driven, etc.. While it pains some in journalism to admit that their profession has often been politicized and has become agenda driven, that is hard to argue against when you have the NYTimes, MSNBC and others on the left, Wall Street Journal, Fox News and others that tend more to the right.

Given a careful read of any given article or TV news report, and a you can often deduce the political or other spin of that journalist.

Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean that journalism is dead. There are good journalists out there. But when agendas are so obvious, doesn’t it make sense to engage in AM in a way that might positively influence the media conversation? Shouldn’t we in MH be as keen to share our facts as other special interest groups are to advocate for their interests?

The answer is obvious. Yes, we need MH AM that can intersect positively with the media.

There are a number of bloggers in MH. There are those who put out PDF monthly reports on their areas of interest. We still have the Journal, the last true print publication (okay, there are newsletters that go out via U.S. Mail too…), and numerous association news for their members. All of these and others might be called part of MH’s AM.

Then there are and What we can point to is that we are intersecting with the media, an increasingly, because we are careful in being able to back up what we publish, the mainstream media is little by little responding, often favorably.

We too candidly have an agenda with and We want to report on and periodically set the record straight on issues relating to MH. As much as possible, we want to be the Good News about MH, without ignoring the challenges that face us all.

We’re the broadest and most balanced AM resource on MH. We Provide, You Decide ©.

When someone asks me, what term do you use to describe your online publications? We are MH Industry Trade Media.

While some have both print and a website, I’m not aware of anyone that does all that our two platforms do, including

  • Videos,

  • Daily Business News,

  • Business Daily Market Reports,

  • our popular Cup of Coffee with… interviews with industry figures, etc..

  • Articles, commentary, inspirational quotes, etc., etc.

You and thousands of others have responded by making us the most popular platforms of their kind in MH. Who says? Readers and viewers like you, and website statistics (traffic). Our leadership in MH AM – trade media – is a matter of facts, not just opinions.

Is this important? Yes. We are increasingly influencing the media and public officials.

Also important, we have MH professionals who use our website to sell homes to customers ‘on the fence’ who have concerns about issues like MH in windstorms. I’ve been given unsolicited ‘thank you’ comments on MH sales made due to information we share free online.

No wonder our traffic on both sites has steadily grown.

Sustainably Growing MH Sales

There are a few key facets to selling more MH. Some will say, Financing. Clearly, you have to have loans and lenders in any big ticket sales industry. But what is needed beyond financing and the products themselves?

  1. Professionalism – Best Practices. MHProNews brings you more columns by more attorneys or other experts than anyone else in MH AM today.

  2. Useful articles and videos on Just see for yourself. We know the information and education found this site is used in selling more MH. That is good for current and future MH Homeowners, as well as for associations, businesses and individual industry professionals.

  3. Inspiration and motivation. Our industry isn’t in the go-go 90s post-HUD Code heyday. Our pros often need a boost. We provide that via Innovation – Information and Inspiration for Industry Professionals. ©

  4. News and commentary. MH Industry News, Tips and Views Pros Can Use. © That tag line sums it up.

Nuclear November 2014 – Energy or Explosions for Manufactured Housing?

November 1st, 2014 No comments

As the headline implies, this brief intro to our monthly line-up of featured articles isn’t about environmental or energy policies, as important as each may be. Rather, we’re using a metaphor of releasing nuclear energy in a way that will be productive, or we risk energy that is destructive instead.

Darlington Nuclear Generating Station – Canada

nuclear-bomb-credit-wikicommons-posted-masthead-blog-mhpronews-com-The atom – and then the nuclear – bombs are the most destructive forces generally known to humanity. But harnessing such “nuclear energy” powers the electric grids in many homes and businesses worldwide. That principle is our brief thought for today.

When you read

> Marty Lavin’s article,

> Cup of Coffee with…Ross Kinzler or

> Tim Connor’s article on management,

or other commentary in Industry Voices, there is an unplanned but common thread! That thread – IMHO – includes leadership, but it also includes channeling energy and facing challenges. Ignore a challenge, and it will sooner or later catch up with you or your firm, as have the finance-or-image issues for our industry.

Someone suggested we are trying to start a revolt by raising the leadership issue, not so. We are simply giving voice to those who are already talking about these topics.

I recall a MHEC meeting about 3.5 years ago, and a veteran state executive turned to then MHI President Thayer Long, and said,‘Thayer, with all due respect, you are not getting the job done.’ Was it a coincidence that not long afterward, Thayer resigned and went on to other association work?

The point is that it is best to have issues like leadership – when they are being so widely discussed already – voiced. Let people see precisely what others are thinking. That gives others the opportunity to adapt as needed. As a leader at a publicly traded firm told me, ‘Tony, there are advantages to transparency.’

We’ll provide a periodic forum for that sort of leadership discussion, so long as the topic resonates with MH Industry pros and enthusiasts like you.

We are ‘recruiting’ new team members. As I describe our industry via videos and words – written and spoken – part of what I share is a vision of our being agents for positive, profitable change for Manufactured Housing in America.

In a trillion dollar a year U.S. housing industry, we can and must muster the will and wisdom to triple or more our new home shipment levels. When that happens, most all engaged in the mix will benefit.

Some cower or are angered by discussions of changes needed in MH. Being afraid of the public discussion is about as smart as being afraid of a virus you know how to avoid or treat. And if you don’t know how to treat a virus, then its time to learn.

Experts and Informed Opinions!

I deliberately reach out every month to those I know will have a different point of view than mine, because how else can we see where the truth is without comparison between varying ideas?

Agree or Disagree – let us know, with your own OpEd or letter to the editor. What is certain is that the energy – negative and positive – flowing through the manufactured and modular housing’s “power grid” must be tapped and channeled, or it will become destructive.

Speaking of energy, we bring you three different views in one article below on the DOE Energy standards for manufactured homes. “We Provide, You Decide.” (c)

Speaking of Finance…

Agonizing, Insightful August Ending

August 30th, 2014 No comments

We wrap up some tests and this month with some off the record quotes about some of the news stories that we covered the week ending 8.30.2014. About the story of LandSea, a reportedly green Chinese industrialized housing firm coming to the U.S. with plans to invest $1 billion here in housing projects, this comment from a C-Suite level corporate leader.

Will have to think on this. Dunno what to think...” about the implications of what this means to modular, pre-fab or manufactured home builders in the U.S.. Of course there were others who ran the gamut from thinking this is good news, to those being rather troubled by it.

The link to the LandSea story found in the Daily Business News (DBN) is below.

The MH energy saving makeover story was part of a storm of interest and reaction too. This may have been my favorite comment about the DBN format used this week which also saw potential positive from the MH energy makeover…

I like the DBN’s items and it makes me think how we as an industry can use it more to our advantage. Maybe if I were to pick 8-10 newspapers and send a “share” with one each week for two months it would be interesting how much got “picked up” by the local press. I love the article on weatherization improvements…

Very cool idea – influencing the influencers! We’ll be keen to hear how that goes, and FYI, we think this would be great for companies, associations and buyers groups to try in their market too. It could be done in minutes, and the impact in YOUR market could be important.

Technically, it wasn’t a story we covered at all (one of our deliberate Failure to Report decisions). But one person commented on a pair of fellows followed by a few hundred each, who must have been trying to get a rise out of the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) and by implication, me and MHProNews too.

Paraphrasing, ‘I like the analogy of the professional wresting tag team.’ There are some issues worth responding to, others frankly not. This failure to report incident from this week was a hoot to me, but a pro who called in said it was sad that people who claim to be leaders resort to such tactics to the detriment of those who follow them. Another said, ‘What do they have to show for their own efforts?’

C-Suite level Corporate comment about Tiny Houses, Subsidized Housing, Canadian Investors and LandSea too

We [manufactured housing] have not invested in serious infrastructure. If the big boys [companies like the DBNs about the Canadians, Chinese, etc.] come with the money and expertise you will see a revolution in how housing is built in America. We are getting much poorer as a nation and the affordable housing needs are becoming greater. People will embrace new housing solutions. Hell you have people glamorizing homes under 200 square feet.”

I’m not even going to paraphrase one of the more interesting comments that came to us, from not one but two executives in China…

…at least not today.

Thanking Us, Thanking You

The most common comment of the week began or used the words “thank you, followed by the specific item we were being thanked for. In fact, a number of stories we published as DBNs this week came as a result of news tips emailed in. Keep email address handy, it goes to our full team if I happen to be in on the road, in meetings, etc. Or you can always email, and please be patient for a response. Let me thank all of you who have connected on LinkedIn, sent endorsements, sent news tips, and of course I’m thanking our team and sponsors too.

FYI, LinkedIn tells us that you’ve made mine the #1 profile views in the Industry for the last 90 days. Wow…thanks.

For those who ask, is there value to being published? Ya think?

Those who are doing articles, interviews or even guest columns on our sites are getting noticed. Speaking of Interviews, if you’ve not read the three popular A Cup of Coffee with... from this month yet, here they are, in no specific order:

September’s interview will be A Cup of Coffee with…Sheila Dey, the Executive Director of the powerhouse WMA, which informed sources tell us is one of the top 5 associations in the nation for budget, impact and influence. Don’t miss it!

Connecting the Dots for Manufactured Housing

As noted about a week ago, we decided to do a test with the Daily Business News items. Some were a little longer than normal, or had adding in some links or other information that helps ‘connect the dots’ as to more precisely what the meaning is for manufactured housing.

Be it the shorter versions of the DBNs that Matthew Silver normally does for us, or a longer ‘connect the dots’ version of the DBNs we did this week while Matthew was taking a well earned vacation, these stories, combined with our featured articles, other blogs, reports and news are reasons why we say a minimum of 15 minutes a day is what a serious professional has to invest. We know that thousands of you are doing that already, if you are one, thank you!

These are living cases of “knowledge is potential power.”  My thanks to those who are using RSS feds to our site, to those who are having their team members sign up for our eblast or encouraging them to read, know and grow daily.

Agonizing, Insightful August Ending

If you’ve wondered why MH isn’t doing more,
look no further than some of these stories!

Here is the line up, for the DBN test we’ve done the past 8 days, sans the stock reports. FYI, many of these articles quickly jumped into the top 1% of all the articles being read on MHProNews. Because thousands of articles are accessed on our site monthly, being in the top 1% of articles means thousands of pageviews on that specific items is of interest to you and/or your MH colleagues, researchers, investors and aficionados of MH.

(Yes, that’s Ivanka Trump on the right)

And to help connect more dots…

MH Death and Disaster, the Other Image Campaign

One caller this week said, “Tony, when you look around and see what’s available in manufactured housing industry publishing, it is obvious why your platforms are #1.”  My reply, this is only possible because we have so many supporters, writers and others who make this platform and our public-focused sister site at a reality. It’s team work!

Eye Opening, 8 day Manufactured Housing “Opportunitie$ in the News” Test

August 22nd, 2014 No comments

Don’t miss out on opportunitie$ all around you! We hear from a variety of manufactured housing professionals, that too many MHPros are under-informed about the multi-billion dollar potential implications of the local, regional or national news we see or hear daily.

So for the next week –  8 days – while Matthew Silver is on a well earned vacation,  your Masthead  scribe will fill in and give a slightly different take on the popular MHProNews Daily Business News (DBNs). For years, Matthew and Eric Miller before him selected DBN stories geared to be useful in navigating issues or spotting potential useful for opportunity-minded and forward thinking MH Industry professionals.

Step in and solve a problem, while profiting by doing it.
Photo and credit in 4th DBN linked below.

For the DBNs through the balance of August, we’ll spell out the implication of that particular story to industry pros just a bit more.  Please email me – or – your thoughts and feedback during or after this news test. We hope you’ll find it useful and eye opening. Thank you!

Here are DBN examples from today, to make the point:

Residential Eye Sores to be Renovated with Federal/Local tax dollars for Affordable Housing

> Affordable Housing Irony – Hundreds on WilCo Waiting List near MH Production Centers

> All Parks Alliance for Change Lobbying Congress Opposing Minnesota Community Owners Support for a Floor Vote on the Preserving Access to Manufactured Housing Act, HR 1779

> From Moscow with Love: Lawsuit Advances Against Manufactured Home Community Owner

FYI, this last link is another example of the ‘bad news image campaign,’ we covered a week ago. Let me suggest as well that the “Moscow” story finds potentially profitable solutions in the efforts of forward thinking professionals, see examples below.

Solutions to Challenged MHC Properties, like the one near Moscow…

Some may call this heretical, but I think it is self evident that Sam Landy led UMHPaul Bradley, Scott Roberts, Brian Fannon, “Frank and Dave” are each among those taking unique paths to make sometimes distressed or struggling MH Communities better.

Scott Roberts is doing that in a previously abandoned and abused MHC, that he and his team at Roberts Resorts are bringing back to life a now beautiful property for residents to call home. Not only do the Roberts Resort team deserve praise, but this is proving successful as a business model.

Brian Fannon is working on a similar scenario, that Matthew Silver outlined in a DBN linked here. Please look for a more detailed story soon on on this topic!

While many in our industry’s ranks see their choice of lingo as unfortunate, nevertheless we should give credit where it is due; Frank Rolfe and Dave Reynolds are buying and improving the communities they are investing in.

A More In Depth Look at a Solution Oriented Professional

Here’s my take on the latest in our popular Cup of Coffee with... interview series, specifically an aspect of the the one with Paul Bradley. Among the keen points Paul shared, the first quote below is part of a longer reply about practical ways to boost our industry’s bottom line results:

Implicit in that is fostering a healthy home resale market – helping homebuyers buy existing stock – that is vital to every community owner. We’re doing that through home financing, community marketing and linkages to local retailers and other intermediaries.

In reviewing APAC’s anti-MH professional statement, linked again here, I couldn’t help but think about this following quote from ROC’s Bradley.

Advocates rattle cages by organizing and leveraging their political capital to level the playing field through regulatory and legal change. To some, a counter to a held position is an enemy, I get that.

To my ear, I actually think there’s more room for mutual understanding and progress than is being worked on. For certain, when people on both sides throw “enemy” around, they’re not on a path to talking about solutions.

That’s power politics and rallying the base – it’s polarizing – and we know where that gets everyone. On the other hand, ROC USA is a developer-type – we understand markets and business and we stay focused on business issues, on getting the job done. We work in the market, preserving MHCs through resident ownership.”

(Editor’s Note: Bold emphasis added above.)

Manufactured Housing 2014’s Amazing August!

August 1st, 2014 No comments

August. Back to school sales. People in a rush to get their manufactured home before winter sets in. Those end of the summer vacations. Baseball is starting its wind up, while football season is ready to launch. There are plenty of reasons why August is simply AMAZING! Let’s review a few in rapid fire fashion.

  • The RV MH Hall of Fame dinner – Monday August 4th – looms large. We don’t think there is a larger joint RV MH national event, and this year may be a record turn out in recent years. Both industries are up, but let’s be honest, RVs outpace MH by 5 to 1. Ouch! MHPros, we have to work on that!

In fact, we may have essentially tied or even exceed our “Read Hot June” totals, but we needed to do some site upgrades here on MHProNews in this last week of the month. The good news was that our blogs and the back end stayed live, but some of our popular featured articles and other resources were not available for about a day. Still, when the dust settles and we get our Webalizer reports, we’ll be close to those June 2014 totals.

  • We also upgraded our RAM and server this week on ManufacturedHomeLivingNews. Traffic and content had grown to the point the site was hiccuping at times, and so we took Nike’s advice and just did it. Check out the new speed on your next visit, at the link above.

  • The ‘good news’ about modern manufactured homes is slooooooooooooooowly seeping into the mainstream media. We see it because we look at the news and are looking for the good news. Even the ‘bad’ stories often have silver linings. But there is no question that we need to do a better collective job of sharing the good news of MH today. We do our part! Our writers, sponsors and advertisers do theirs! How about you? What do YOU do to make MH advance?

  • There is still some ‘bad news’ taking place. While arrests or criminal charges for fraud or larceny, etc. may not seem like the same thing as a CFPB or state complaint – or a fair housing case – they are all examples of behavior that nets our industry a black eye when it happens. Over the years, haven’t we all seen desperate operations that tried some scam or gimmick, to hoping for extra bucks or to try to avoid going under? Did you ever see one that took money without delivering homes and survived that?

  • Tips YOU and Your Team Can USE! Speaking of fair housing…I’m not sure how we can ever get a legit fair housing complaint in MH. Every month for years now, we share Nadeen Green, the attorney known as the Fair Housing Lady in monthly featured articles. Some devotedly follow Nadeen’s writings! Some wisely share them with their sales people and office staff. While reading her or any attorney is no substitute for having your own counsel, it sure is helpful.

  • DJ Pendleton rejoins us this month with an article on the latest from the CFPB. Until we can get regulations changed, the wise do all they can to work for change but also to stay between the regulatory ditches.

  • Another expert from Hart King Law – Bill Dahlin, returns this month too. Check out Bill’s article on negligent design, and how that might impact an operation near you (or you…). All of the tips from our featured legal experts can help you stay out of the ditches and/or put you on the road to more profitable ways to do your business.

The Interviews you won’t find anywhere else!

    • Bill Matchneer, JD, former program director at HUD, who just retired from the CFPB joins us again this month. Check out his latest thoughts since his last interview here. Is there any controversy looming in his comments? Take a look…Bill’s linked below along with our other 18 featured articles for Awesome August.

    • Tim Connor, CSP. Tim’s career has been amazing! I’ve seen him present live many times.  He delivers and his audience ratings prove it. Tim is perhaps our most faithful writer over the years, so we are pleased to bring you at last an interview with a man whose done training in a couple of dozen countries world wide, and here in the U.S. for dozens of operations in factory built housing. After 4000 presentations and 80 plus books, it is safe to say Tim’s top shelf. His thinking can make you money.

    • Paul Bradley, ROC USA. How many in our industry’s ranks have realized that ROC USA has grown so much, they could easily be ranked among the larger portfolio operators in the U.S.? That’s true! Besides our usual ones, we put some TOUGH, thought provoking questions to Paul. We have to keep a straight face, because let me tell you, the man is smart (and witty!). Don’t miss it, and if you are a community owner, you especially don’t want to miss Paul’s interview.

Dennis Hill brings us updates on Louisville and Tunica. Word to the wise, if you haven’t locked in your spaces, better hurry.  Both will sell out way early from what we hear. Make your plans for both events, now.  Read it from Dennis, at the link below.

Speaking of events…many who ‘can’t make it’ to a trade show have asked us over the years, can’t we see a video of the seminars? Well…not usually! First of all, the seminars are put on for the benefit of attendees. Frankly, you don’t get the same impact from a video as you would when you’re live. But we made special arrangements with our friends a to bring you some of the highlights of a panel presentation on lessons learned in the MH and MHC space. Check it out, at this link here.

Experts! Thinkers! Proven Leaders!

  • Ron D’Ambra with joins us this month! Ron’s not talking about his operation, rather he takes another look at the NBC News Today Show video on the MH Hurricane testing. Get some fascinating insights you or I may have missed!

  • Award winning Steve Lefler joins us this month! Community owners, listen up. 5 years into Newport Pacific’s projects with Steve’s “Modular Lifestyles,” a pattern of success is emerging. There are reasons why Steve continues to attract an ever-growing following in factory built housing, but also from outside of our industry’s ranks. He’s changing perceptions, see how!

  • Hall of Famer Ron Thomas Sr. returns! This time, not to talk about Louisville, but rather to open your eyes with a challenge to conventional thinking that may make you say, “Hey. I never looked at it that way before.” Ron has a way of turning a phrase or pin-pointing ‘aha!’ insights. You think that’s why the man’s operation sold 6000 homes? It is also why the nice MHC’s Ron developed are the kinds of places residents are happy to call home.

  • Bob Vahsholtz, industry veteran, expert, strategist and author of Duel Curves, will challenge you anew this month too.

  • Once more, we bring you the immortal words of Zig Ziglar! Our thanks again to Zig’s editor for making this possible.

  • Powerful, practical management and sales insights from Tim Connors! Plus some from L. A. “Tony” Kovach too…on different industry topics, like the 1.3 billion dollar MH deal that was announced just this week.

Okay, you get the idea! There are reasons why we have the most professional readers of any audience anywhere in the North American factory built housing world. We Provide, You Decide.  ©

With no further adieu, please check out the links on the best and broadest line up in manufactured and modular home trade journalism.
