Warren Kicked Hornet’s Nest – How Move May Connect With MH, Renters, Professionals

Successful politicians and good brands have much in common.

Consider for a moment how Acura’s video commercial made a mark in the blogosphere, one that caused scores of keyboards and social media posts to go favorably wagging. “The [Acura automotive] ad is buoyed by Motörhead’s rendition of the Rolling Stone’s classic, Sympathy for the Devil, as the auto does its best sportscar-style moves,” said The Drum.

Every successful professional or politico knows the value of good social and mainstream media. But something must happen to grab that spotlight.  On Friday, Team Warren kicked the hornet’s nest of big business.  Which means that her fight is now on.

What every business, person, or politicians needs is energy. That Acura commercial – it has energy. The Warren campaign arguably just lifted their energy level.

Wittingly or not, for good or ill, there is no doubt that Senator Elizabeth Warren (MA-D) has several touch-points with manufactured housing professional interests.

Let’s be blunt.

Some in MHVille cheer her, while others jeer. But that too has potential energizing value for a firebrand like Warren.  As her hoped for GOP counterpart in the Oval Office has demonstrated, one can rise in the polls, even when controversial.  Sometimes, one rises in the polls, especially when a person or organization are shaking things up.

On MHProNews’ Masthead editorial blog, let’s note for new readers that Senator Warren – the long-shot for the 2020 Democratic nominee for president – has addressed groups that included MHAction. She was a driving force behind Dodd-Frank and the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

Those won’t earn her fan mail from several quarters.  We hope to engage with their campaign on those issues. That said, let’s now turn to the plus column.

Friday, the Warren campaign’s emailed statement to MHProNews stressed her emphasis on antitrust legislation.  Of course that campaign plank will cause shivers for some, but may draw curious smiles from others who are small- to mid-sized business professionals.

Warren’s strongly stated antitrust stance ought to have Republicans, President Donald J. Trump, independents, and her fellow Democrats pondering the 22 million who live in a pre-HUD Code mobile home, or a post June 15, 1976 manufactured home.  Why?  How might that target audience swing in the 2020 nomination battle?  Will breaking up mega-corporations play well during table talk at the community clubhouse?

Or consider the larger-still potential voting block of renters. They are over 100 million living in rentals, said CityLabs in 2018.  The vast majority of renters, per the National Association of Realtors ™ (NAR), want to be homeowners.

NAR’s Scholastica ‘Gay’ Cororaton, CBE, did research that praised manufactured homes in 2018.  Cororaton noted in her research that millions of renters pay the same or more monthly as what it would cost them to live in a manufactured home. She also debunked several of the quality concerns, noting that was true of pre-HUD Code mobile homes, not post HUD Code manufactured homes.  Here’s how she phrased it.

Each photo is of a modern manufactured home, which can be 2400 sq ft or more in size, 1 or 2 levels, set over a basement, or can be as modest as 320 sq ft. These homes are all built to federal construction and safety standards that went into effect on June 15, 29176, administered by HUD, and are thus known as “HUD Code Manufactured Homes.”

Recall, that Cororaton thoughtfully cited moi and the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform‘s (MHARR) Mark Weiss, JD, in her through research’s first footnote, on page 48.

Renters and manufactured home owners are in a very real sense aspirational audiences that any savvy candidate should desire.

Who says?

In August of 2016, an op-ed in the New York Times noted that the “Downwardly Mobile for Trump.” That column cited a survey that revealed “Support for Mr. Trump wasn’t strongly related to income and employment.” That included the residents of mobile and manufactured homes, per the NY Times and others.

Curious about that claim, MHProNews did an unscientific survey of campaign signs and bumper stickers in a four star manufactured home community as Election Day 2016 approached. Our informal research confirmed the NY Times claim. The clear edge among manufactured home owners favored then GOP candidate Mr. Trump over Democratic nominee Secretary Hillary Clinton.

Why Does this Matter to MHVille Now?

The 2020 campaign has been in full swing for months. It will only get hotter. With a crowded field, and with the first debates ahead, the contenders must differentiate themselves.

Voters and donors must make early choices.

What follows are the 3 key words from the Warren Campaign email yesterday.  It will be followed by her campaign’s  pitch.  For those that know our editorial views, you won’t be surprised when we smile while sharing these 3 bullets from the Warren camp.

  • Antitrust
  • Monopolies
  • Breakup

Senator Warren isn’t just taking about regulating big companies, she wants to break the giant conglomerates up. On her 3 bullets, 3 cheers.

As you read the sections of their statements that will follow, ponder this fact. Your Masthead writer shared a pair of links – one of which is below, that the Warren campaign – which renounced major donors – received with enthusiastic thanks and interest.  As veteran readers on MHProNews know, you can access the report by clicking the hot-linked text-image box below.

Bridging Gap$, Affordable Housing Solution Yields Higher Pay, More Wealth, But Corrupt, Rigged Billionaire’s Moat is Barrier

Strategic Allies?

Rephrased, there are pragmatic strategic reasons why the Warren’s campaign may want to publicly lash out at a billionaire who’s first name matches her last.  There are likewise strategic reasons why if Warren did so publicly, there are numbers of independent manufactured housing professionals that could find her the more appealing Democratic candidate in their bid to recapture the Oval Office.  Because those independents don’t want to be treated as the de facto serfs of Warren Buffett’s growing empire.  Here are just two screen captures from the Twitter feed of Austin Frerick, of the Open Markets Institute (OMI).

Warren Buffett’s monopolistic tendencies in manufactured housing have sparked years of controversy that the Seattle Times, BuzzFeed, Representative Maxine Waters (CA-D), the Open Market’s Austin Freric (see graphics, above and below), GuruFocus, the Nation, Democracy Now, and others.  They’ve found Clayton Homes and their problematic record on race, business practices, and lending worthy of their respective ire.

AustinFrerickOpenMarketsMaxineWatersBrianSullivanHUDClaytonHomes

Recall how Clayton’s home town media put it in 2018?  See the reminder, below.

What better way for Senator Warren to grab headlines, and the potential interests of millions in the misunderstood and under-appreciated groups noted above, than to go after the third richest man in America?  Namely, Warren Buffett?

What better way for her to set herself apart from the crowd than to use the facts we’ve shared with her campaign, to highlight Buffett and his minions in Knoxville and Arlington, VA for their purportedly harmful monopolistic Moat?

Weeks before Warren made her announcement on Friday, MHLivingNews spotlighted Senator Warren’s speech to the antitrust-minded Open Markets crowd.  It may be one of the best cases yet on how existing laws can be applied to go after the giant conglomerates.  That’s why we published it with some related commentary.  Her thesis is that there is no need for years of waiting for new legislation.  Warren says that the laws on the books are all that is needed for immediate action.

Who Will Act? Will Senator Elizabeth Warren, and/or the Trump Administration Act to Restore Open Markets, Thereby Supporting Affordable Manufactured Homes?

Can Warren and MHVille Democrats, Plus Others Connect?

Strategically, one can make the argument that this fits Senator Warren’s needs.  It also fits that 50 percent of the manufactured home industry – with far more people – could find reason to support someone like her if she will publicly oppose Buffett’s brands demonstrable take over of the most proven part of the affordable housing industry, through purported market manipulation via Moat building “Conquest Capitalism.” © Depending on how the discussions go with team Warren, MHProNews just might give Senator Warren’s campaign the green light to use that phrase “Conquest Capitalism” in her campaign.

With a wink, ICYMI, here is the report on that topic, accessed via the hot-linked text image box, below.

Conquest Capitalism – Thoughts of Chairman Warren Buffett – Billionaires Campaign to Control Trillion Dollar Affordable Housing Market

What about the Donald?

As a political independent, we make no secret about the fact that we supported President Trump in 2016.  His campaign thought so highly of the support by my Persian princess, Soheyla Kovach, that they placed her pro-Trump column on their campaign website. Soheyla’s endorsement remained there until the Trump site was redone, after the 2016 election.

No doubt Soheyla checked off several useful boxes for Team Trump.

12ReasonsEducatedIranianAmericanWomanSupportsDonaldTrumpPostedMastheadBlogMHProNews954x846

While it is anyone’s guess how many read it there on the Trump campaign site, what is better known is that thousands of other sites picked it up, per search results. Those remained active, or Google wouldn’t have registered it.

These are details the Warren camp, other campaigns, and manufactured housing professionals from coast-to-coast should ponder.

The Word from Warren

Even Republicans and libertarians should consider what follows carefully. Why? Because Elizabeth Warren – with who’s campaign we’ve made clear that there are stances she holds that we disagree with – is arguably dead right about the over-arching power of Big Tech and other monopolies. That’s another issue that long-standing MHProNews readers know we share.  That’s another cheer. Here’s a blast from the cited past. Compare what Scott Galloway, of New York Stern, said about what he called the Big Four in tech.

ScottGallowayNYSternIsntAnIndictmenFourRetributionRecognitionKeyHealthyEconomicCyclisPruningFirmsWhenInvasiveCausePrematureDeathWontLetOtherFirmsEmergeMHProNews

Good policy is not partisan. What Galloway said in this previously cited quote, finds echoes in what the Warren Campaign said below.

Even Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Friday night loudly sang Senator Warren’s praises on this specific antitrust announcement.  Yes, he reminded his readers that he sees other topics differently, just as we are doing herein.

With that lengthy background, let’s turn to how Elizabeth Warren has kicked the hornets nest so effectively, that it has set the media across the left-right spectrum abuzz.  There’s energy.

WarrenElizabethWarrenCampaign

Think about all the time you spend on the internet — checking the news, shopping, catching up with old friends, reading emails like this one.

Well, more and more of the things we do online are being controlled by a smaller and smaller group of giant corporations.

They’ve mastered a very powerful business model: Monopolize their platform and force other companies, media platforms, and publishers out of business.

If you buy something online, there’s a nearly 50% chance that you’re going through Amazon. If you go to any website, there’s more than a 70% chance that it’s owned or run by Google or Facebook.

America’s biggest tech companies are controlling more and more of our digital lives.

Here’s why tech companies with nearly unfettered power aren’t a good thing: They buy potential rivals, like Facebook did with Instagram and WhatsApp, limiting innovation and choice. They create marketplaces that they own and compete on — a conflict of interest that lets them snuff out smaller rivals — like Amazon and Google have done for shopping, search tools, and online ads.

They bully cities and states into showering them with massive taxpayer handouts — and spend the profits they get from being the only game in town to lobby and rig the rules even further in their favor.

They even scare investors away from funding new startups — because what’s the use in going up against a giant corporation that’ll just snap you up or drive you out of business?

This all means less competition, less innovation, and a worse internet for all of us. Think about it: If you’re not happy with Facebook’s privacy policy, maybe you’d like to spend your time on Instagram instead. Except, wait: Facebook owns Instagram.

We’ve got to call it out. And we’ve got to do something about it. So today, I’m proposing a new plan to break up the biggest tech companies and make sure these corporations don’t get so powerful that they undermine our democracy.

There’s a long history in America of breaking up companies if they have too much power in the marketplace: Standard Oil, AT&T, and the railroad industry led to the bipartisan creation of our first antitrust laws.

What I’m proposing is right in line with our country’s history — and it’s a big part of what has allowed our economy to grow and new companies to thrive.

Here’s how our plan works — there are two big pieces to it.

#1: Pass a new law for “Platform Neutrality.”

If you’re a ginormous tech company that’s created a platform for other businesses to compete on — like the Amazon marketplace, or the Google ad exchange — you shouldn’t also own a company that sells on it. Put simply: You shouldn’t be able to tilt the playing field in your own direction.

#2 Appoint regulators who’ll use existing legal tools to unwind tech mergers that illegally undermine competition.

With the antitrust laws that are already on the books, we can undo big mergers that never should have been approved in the first place — and give smaller and medium-sized companies a fighting chance to compete with the big guys. That means we break Facebook away from Instagram and WhatsApp, Amazon away from Whole Foods, Google away from Nest, and more. We could be doing this right now — but we need a president (ahem) who’ll appoint regulators to make it happen.

So what would the internet look like after all these reforms?

Here’s what won’t change: You’ll still be able to go on Google and search like you do today. You’ll still be able to go on Amazon and find 30 different coffee machines that you can get delivered to your house in two days. You’ll still be able to go on Facebook and see how your old friend from school is doing.

Here’s what will change: Small businesses would have a fair shot to sell their products on Amazon without the fear of Amazon pushing them out of business. Google couldn’t smother competitors by demoting their products on Google Search. Facebook would face real pressure from Instagram and WhatsApp to improve their user experience and protect our privacy. Tech entrepreneurs would have a fighting chance to compete against the tech giants.

This is how we’ll make sure we get more competition and more new ideas in the tech economy, instead of just a few giant tech companies calling all the shots — and regular people not having much say in the tools we use everyday.

That’s how we get innovation. That’s how we get an internet that does a better and better job of letting us stay connected with each other — from pictures of grandkids to emails and petitions like this one. That’s how we protect our privacy in a rapidly changing world.

We can get this done. We can make big, structural change. But it’s going to take a grassroots movement, and it starts right now.

Elizabeth

This morning, Elizabeth announced her new plan to break up the big tech companies like Amazon, Google, and Facebook.

Sign the petition to support Elizabeth’s plan to break up the biggest tech companies that run the internet.

That way, we’ll get more competition, more innovation, and a better internet for all of us. But it’s going to take a grassroots movement to make this kind of big, structural change.

If we’re going to rebuild the middle class, then we’ve got to ensure competition in one of our country’s biggest and fastest-growing industries and a fighting chance for up-and-coming innovators.

If we’re going to save our democracy, then we’ve got to make sure these corporations don’t get so powerful that they undermine it.

Elizabeth has spent her career fighting to level the playing field for working families. So when she says she’s in this fight to take on the powerful corporations that are rigging the system, she means business — whether it’s big banks, big Pharma, or big tech companies.

Let’s send a message loud and clear: No corporation — not even Amazon, Google, or Facebook — should be so powerful that they bend cities and states to their will, or so big that they’re exempt from antitrust laws.

Thanks for being in this fight,

Team Warren

One More Thing…

We’d note one more point – linked above – for those from the Warren camp. That linked rundown on the Value Penguin site rounds out how her campaign (or any other), renters, and manufactured housing could find political alignment.

Good public policy is nonpartisan.

As we’ve been saying for years, on all things and all people, it’s about separating wheat from chaff. We would concur with Warren that there is strong evidence that the system is rigged.  Ponder how Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Donald Trump have all complained during their campaigns about the rigged system.  We see the evidence that manufactured housing was rigged. That rigging has arguably cost manufactured home owners more equity.  That rigging has cost millions of renters the opportunity to own. That rigging of the system has harmed the interests of thousands of manufactured housing independents. Longtime readers know we’ve made that case.

Dialogue with the Warren campaign, or any other campaign that sees the value of two potentially large and often overlooked voting blocks, could bridge the gap on other issues where we do not yet see eye-to-eye.

ClaytonHomesBerkshireHathawayMarketShareofManufacturedHousingEnd2017MHanufacturedHousingIndustryProNews

While several allegations of monopolistic practices have been made against Clayton Homes and Berkshire Hathaway, this website and MHLivingNews are the only ones to date that is known to have produced evidence, and provided to date this kind of logical, relevant data. Antitrust advocates will need proof, not just hot air. Evidence of how they rigged the system taken straight form their own documents and words are linked here.

What is certain is that Warren, if she wants to beat Senators Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, former VP Joe Biden or others, will have to set herself apart in a way that connects. She will need even more energy. We will naturally stay in touch with the White House, Team Trump, and others too.

We’ll play close attention, engage to the degree possible, and let our audience know. If you thought that 2016 was a wild campaign, hang on to your hats.  2020 could prove to be the most energetic campaign ever. “We Provide, You Decide.” © ## (News, commentary, and analysis.)

#DeFangBM=DemocraticExitFacebookAmazonNetflixGoogleBerkshireHathawayMicrosoft-byMHProNews

The following are not the only purported purveyors of monopolistic moats, manipulating misinformation, or harmful policies and practices. But they are a good start.

#DeFangBM
is short for this acronym:

Democratic Exit
Facebook
Amazon
Netflix
Google
Berkshire Hathaway (includes Clayton Homes, lenders Vanderbilt MF, 21st Mortgage, et al)
Microsoft

The companies listed ought to broken up under federal antitrust laws.

Not regulated. Broken up. Don’t worry, the world didn’t stop when the AT&T monopoly was broken up in the 1980s, America benefited. Affordable cell phones and the internet followed the break up of the old AT&T trust (monopoly).

 ThisIsntAnIndictmentRetributionRecognitionHealthyEconomicCyclePruningFirmsInvasivePrematureDeathWontLetOthersEmergeScottGalloway

Similarly today, the breakup of #FangBM would be good for the economy, jobs, and consumers.

Why would these 6 companies/conglomerates – #FangBM – feature leadership that promote failed ideas, like socialism?  Why have many Democratic leaders embraced socialism?

Why have Democratic leaders – like the following listed – decry billionaires, but then take money from those same billionaires and their affiliates?

   Bill and Hillary Clinton

   Barack Obama

   Bernie Sanders

   Nancy Peolsi

   Chuck Schumer

   Elizabeth Warren

   Maxine Waters

   Tom Perez

   Keith Ellison

Or other Democratic leaders like them? That’s why, it’s #DeFangBM

Why do rich and famous stars or performers endorse the above? #ManipulativeEntertainment

Why do so many in mainstream media give cover to the above? #FakeNews

There’s an echo chamber effect of many in media and #ManipulativeEntertainment carrying the message of the billionaire #FangBM conglomerates and their paid political operatives above.

This is NOT against members of the Democratic Party. We have friends and colleagues who have been or are Democrats. But you don’t let a friend drive drunk, and you warn your friends about to vote Democratic for similar reasons. It’s an act of love to honestly share the truth.

Nor does this mean that the GOP is perfect. But right now – writing as a political independent – the #NewRepublicans are the better choice who are fighting for everyday Americans, and most honest businesses.

Two Part Solution

Part one, vote against all Democrats. #DemocraticExit, #WalkAway. Democrats were the party of the violent Ku Klux Klan (KKK), Slavery, and Jim Crow Laws. Democrats are the party of violent AntiFa or of deceptive #MHAction. Democrats have deceived many for years, to the harm of millions of Americans, and thousands of honest small- to mid-sized businesses.

Part Two

As political independents, not a member of either major party, a #RedTide in the House and Senate on Tuesday allows this new breed of:

   American Jobs First,

   American Businesses First,

   American Security First,

   American Prosperity First,

#AmericaFirst in the GOP –  a.k.a. the Republican Party – to return to the roots of the Republican Party that gave us #PresidentAbrahamLincoln and #PresidentRonaldReagan.

Keep in mind #POTUSLincoln and #POTUSReagan had strong opposition too.

Today’s #NewRepublicans should break up the conglomerates listed above (trusts, monopolies).  Only the federal government is big enough to break them up. Breaking up #FangBM via #DeFangBM is good for the #AmericaFirst economy. It is pro-free enterprise, by being against crony-capitalists who back socialists.

The #POTUSTrump Administration antitrust (anti-monopoly) order is already drafted, but a Democratic House or Senate could work to stop it. That block against antitrust must be avoided by sharing the #DeFangBM truth and then voting wisely.

No organization, party or person is perfect, and that includes President Donald J. Trump. #POTUSTrump never pretended to be a saint. Candidate Trump admitted he used the system, which is why he knew how to fight this rigged system.

But there are reasons why members of his own party fought him, because he is challenging the #RiggedSystem. This has not been pretty, nor will it be. The rich and famous who may have come by their wealth in often manipulating or #RiggedSystem ways won’t give up their power without a fight.

Once this new #AmericaFirst #NewGOP has a strong hold in the #USHouse, #USSenate and the #ExecutiveBranch, #antitrust laws must break up the parents of the #FakeNews media giants and the companies listed in #DeFangBM.

#DrainTheSwamp takes time. The swamp wasn’t built overnight, and won’t be cured overnight. Freedom takes time and effort, but it is always worth it. There is already real progress being made toward #MAGA. American jobs are coming back. American wealth is returning. #CommonSense is making a come back too.

Vote to keep the momentum going. #VoteRepublican, #VoteNewRepublicans, vote to support the #StableGeniusPresident. ‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good people do nothing,’ paraphrasing #EdmundBurke.

Facebook, Manufactured Housing, and American Drama

June 12th, 2018 No comments
FacebookFossbyteManufacturedHousingINdustryDailyBusinessNewsMHproNews

What do you see?

Facebook has a neat feature that reminds you of some post from the past. This morning, that Facebook feature reminded me of a post about MHVille that was from two years ago.

We’ve begun to use the phrase – “wheat and chaff” – more often to describe the point that people and sources of information must be discerned. Keep the good, toss what’s not useful or is incorrect.

It’s hardly a new thought. Wheat and chaff are an ancient piece of Biblical wisdom.

When we put together the story early this morning about the outcome of the presidential summit, it was the result of hours of input from a variety of sources. It is an example of wheat and chaff in action.

Perhaps 10 (+/-) sources were checked, before we drilled down what we thought was the meaty items for industry pros and investors to know.

Then, we provided the context of what it matters to manufactured housing. “That news through the lens of factory-built housing,” ©; one of our tag lines that describes what MHProNews uniquely does for the manufactured and modular home industry professionals and investors.

It’s about American drama at its finest. Check out that report, linked below, compare it to anything else that might be used for an MH Industry pro, and please tell us what you think.

Facebook, Wheat and Chaff

I recall how Triad Financial President Don Glisson, Jr. gave us a backhanded compliment that we treasure. He said he thought we were crazy when we launched what we call today, MHProNews.  The launch was in mid-October 2009, and was near the industry’s lowest point ever in new home shipments.

Now, approaching a decade later, we as an industry are clearly not heading to extinction, as some then believed could happen.

When asked by the Midwest Manufactured Housing Federation (MMHF) to help bring back the Louisville Snow, we jumped in with both feet. The pay was very modest, considering all that had to be done.  But we did it, and the show was a success, the first one in years.

Tim Williams from Ohio’s association was one of several who praised our work in writing.

TimWilliamsOhioManufacturedHomesAssocExecDirectorRecommendationTonyKovachMHProNewsLouisvilleManufacturedHousingShowPromotion

One of over 1000 endorsements and recommendations, most were given without being requested. We thank each sender for that honor.

Facebook has wheat and chaff. Pretty much everything and everyone does, starting right here.

We are pro-free enterprise. We cheer all honest and ethical forms of success. We stress honesty, and ethics, because some professions are built on the suffering of others.  From illicit drug pushers, to pimps, pornographers, thieves, racketeering, coyotes, and so on, there are illicit businesses that generate tens of billions annually.  We don’t cheer those at all.

But if we are fair and objective, even the darkest parts of human nature reveal truths worth learning.

We must learn to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Breaking Up

Count us among those who hope and pray that the Feds break up Facebook, Google, Amazon, and other monopolistic U.S. giants. Think back, if you are old enough, to the breakup of the telecoms. AT&T was charged under antitrust laws.

Based on Judge Harold Green’s Modified Final Judgement of 1982, AT&T on January 1 1984 became a long-distance company, while seven regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs) took control of the nation’s local phone networks,” says the American Enterprise Institute (AEI).

Some say that the monopoly over the phone business delayed the development of cell phone technologies by a decade.

It is just one of several reasons why corporate giants must be held in check and/or broken up.

To me, it isn’t just about price, which is an arguably flawed standard that antitrust regulators often use.  How many businesses has Walmart and Amazon wiped out? How many jobs has that cost the nation? Would we have seen the shift to buying so much product from China, had Walmart not become so big?

They too should be broken up under antitrust law.  As NY Stern Professor Scott Galloway has argued, it is how you bring oxygen back into the marketplace for startups and investors.  That’s were jobs are created, instead of destroyed.

England, we’ve read, has a supposed standard of 25 percent market-share as the threshold for anti-monopoly (anti-trust) action. That might be still be a bit too high. Once a firm hits 20 percent of a given market, there are inevitable impacts on consumers, businesses, innovation, the economy, politics, etc.

Wheat and chaff. We must learn from whatever is good, and toss out whatever isn’t. The prism of the Ten Commandments – which clearly respects private property – ought to be the standard, timeless measure of behavior.

What Facebook reminded me of this morning is that it has been about two years since I got a tip from a then-fellow Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) member. That member pointed me to a CSPAN video about Richard Cordray and Senator Joe Donnelly. When I watched it, I got what that other MHI member as telling me.

MHI had distorted the exchange, saying only what was good for their narrative, while ignoring what was problematic for their stated agenda.

It seemed deliberately deceptive. It came from MHI VP Lesli Gooch, but our sources then said that MHI President Richard “Dick” Jennison had to okay it.

It’s was at best a half-truth, designed to mislead members. As a member myself, I was outraged. We can call these things allegations, because that is what the legal guys say it should be termed. But if you look at the CSPAN video we watched, and then look at what MHI then said…

Logically, if top MHI staff would deceive members about that, what else have or would they attempt to trick their own dues paying members about?

They had to be held accountable. I called publicly For Jennison’s dismissal along with that of Lesli Gooch.

It wasn’t the first or the last news tip.

Please, we’d rather get a news tip 4 times, than not at all. Don’t presume we have something. We know the generalities, but not always the specifics. Help us, help you help the industry get the most accurate reports by sending association emails, documents, and your own insights. Our default is that we treat comments as off the record, unless you and we specifically agree to make it on the record.

One step at a time, we’ve seen how MHI has weaponized reports. It was tricky, because no one else in the industry had directly named names and cited examples of what was happening, and who was authorizing it, the way we did.

That incident from 2 years ago led to a series of events and reports that has arguably contributed to what has brought us to the point we are in reporting in MHVille today.

Today, we can look back and see MHI, and their debatably Berkshire Hathaway puppet masters as they are. We give them a routine opportunities to comment before, during or after a Daily Business News story. We accurately quote from their own documents. We’ve offered to discuss or debate publicly via video, so all the industry can see.

They duck, dodge, detract, distract, and defame in response, don’t they? Doesn’t all of that speak volumes?  If the truth was on their side, why don’t they just clear the air?

It’s been about 1 1/3 years since they have directly responded publicly. We suspended our industry famous Cup of Coffee series for a time, because it was too politically charged for many. We plan to bring that feature back, because more of the industry’s members are beginning to see — that what we’ve been reporting sadly makes sense.

It’s time to use antitrust laws to break up Berkshire Hathaway, not just Clayton Homes and their lending, retail, and others unit arms.

MHI must be investigated and/or perhaps sued.  They’ve arguably misrepresented to the industry what they are and what they do.

MHI award winner Marty Lavin is sadly correct. MHI works only for the interests of “the big boys.” They work for the smaller companies only if their interests align with that of the big boys.

‘Tip of Iceberg’ – Rick Rand; Marty Lavin, Communities have ‘No Confidence’ in Manufactured Housing Institute, New National Trade Group Announced

The rationale and evidence seems to be that smaller companies are there as a meal for the big boys that want to gobble up smaller firms for a cheap price.

The smaller firms are there to also help pay for what the big boys want. Paraphrasing what another member said, ‘the big companies figured out how to use MHI to help get the smaller companies to pay for what the big companies want.’

Manipulation is often an ugly thing.

No one wants to believe that they were conned.  It’s not fun to have to report about such problems, but it must be done, for the sake of all those who are debatably being victimized.

George Allen Blasts MHI, NCC Ignoring Own, Spencer Roane, SECO, COBA7, Tom Lackey Controversies

These are serious allegations. but there’s also serious evidence. There are several federal investigations already underway, because where there is smoke, there is often fire.

For manufactured housing industry professional and investors to thrive and achieve their full potential, the industry must recognize reality.

Then, each company must decide how best to deal with reality. It’s an American drama that you and hundreds of thousands of others are caught up in, like it or not. More on that drama and its solutions in the days ahead. ## (News, analysis and commentary.)

Expert Witnesses, Manufactured Homes, Investors, Professionals, Researchers, Media, Investigators, Public, Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg and MH Aficionados

July 16th, 2017 No comments

The vast majority who read this blog are professionals. While many are within our industry, a surprising number of those outside looking in come here too.  They may begin elsewhere on MHLivingNews.com or MHProNews.com. But they will often end up here on the publisher’s Masthead blog, looking for answers.

Those who are serious, email, message or call.

Beyond our own industry’s professionals, among those who reach out include, but are not limited to:

  • investors,
  • media,
  • researchers,
  • those seeking an industry expert (think legal matters, expert witness cases),
  • federal or state officials, including investigators,
  • non-profits,
  • international,

others serious about understanding our industry and its role in quality, affordable housing.

I’m not in the prediction business, but let me suggest some things that a number of our Daily Business News articles already point toward.

FacecbooksHousingMoveManufacturedModularHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsReportsSalonZuckerbergPres2020MHProNews

Many, but not all, of the images in this blog post are hot links to stories that have more details. image credits are as shown or on the original post’s page.

Don’t be surprised if Facebook enters the factory-built housing arena, and if it’s billionaire founder – Mark Zuckerberg – runs for presidency in 2020 or 2024.

If Zuckerberg doesn’t run, it will likely be because of European, American and/or other anti-trust actions – or major media exposés – prior to that time.

MHI’s Annual Meeting – Disruption by Advocacy Group Protests?

MHI member Frank Rolfe isn’t the only one who has called out MHI’s leadership for “hypocrisy.”

FrankRolfeMHIHypocrisyQuote-MHProNews

ELS and Rolfe’s operation are among those who may be ‘targets within the target’ of rumored protests against MHI that are looming over MHI’s Orlando meeting. See below for more.

So has the generally left-wing manufactured home community resident advocacy groups. We see – let’s put this carefully – indications that their may be disruptive activity at MHI’s planned meeting in Orlando this year. If the indications of that rumor in fact takes shape, MHProNews may decide to cover that activity.

In an internet – George Soros and (Soros minded Brethren) funded age, it doesn’t take long for those left wing groups to mobilize, and organize a protest.

There may even be a Facebook tie-in to that, we’ll try to keep an eye on those developments for you.

PBSNPRNewsObserverFakeNewsLogoDailyBusinessNewsManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsResearchDataReportsProNews

No one else in manufactured housing even comes close to exposing more ‘fake news’ that harms our industry, or spotlights more real news that industry pros need to know.

The GSEs, Investors, and Other Investigators

There are happy, curious and unhappy people who call or electronically reach out to our publications.

As many in our industry know – while we love sponsors, we are not as dependent on traditional advertising – as other media are. The reason is we provide web, marketing, video, training, coaching and other expert, professional services. Those always have been the bulk of our revenues.

Some of those callers are seeking services.

Some want to understand the financial opportunities.

Others are looking at this or that operation in MH, at times with a legal, or other ‘takedown’ motivation in mind. When I mention the possible disruption in Orlando…

…well, let’s just leave it at that for now.

MediaFederalInvestigationsManufacturedHousingInstituteMHIFakeNewsMHProNewsI’ve been accused of using stream of consciousness in my Masthead columns (and hereby plead Nolo Contendere to that charge).

NoloContendere

Again, crystal balls are broken, but don’t be surprised at the following allegation.

There are parties from 2008-2009 and other eras in our industry’s history that are exploring what might become one or more of the largest class action lawsuits in the industry’s history. As a hint – based upon what is heard – they may be focused on major operations in the industry, in the community, finance, production and retail sides of the industry.

Yours truly has not at this time entered into any agreements with such parties. If that should happens and If I would be engaged as an expert witness, I would unlikely be able to write about it, so remember. You read it here, first.

Closing Thoughts

The Berkshire Hathaway companies have their plans. We see them, we are asked about them, we report on it too.

AnotherClaytonAquisitionLoomsManufacturedHousingIndustryDailyBusinessNewsReportsResearchMHProNews

Clayton logo is their property, and is shown here with a collage by MHProNews, under fair use guidelines.

Others have their plans, and those others routinely hang out with their fellows at – shall we call them a members group? – as they carve up their favorite chunks of manufactured housing.

For those who have been around as long – or longer – than myself, they remind me that Champion and Fleetwood once dominated manufactured housing. They went on a buying spree in the late 1990s and into the early part of 2000s. When they and others collapsed not long thereafter, and in the wake of Warren Buffett’s entry into the manufactured home industry space, new powers have come to dominate.

Don’t Think Small

We’ve said for years, don’t be complacent. Don’t think small. This is going to become again the hottest sector of housing, unless someone with an agenda deliberately kills it.

There are forces lining up that are for – and against – manufactured housing. Those “against it” might more accurately be described as those who – like those left-leaning home owner groups, or potential litigants – don’t necessarily hate MH.  They just have a bone to pick. That bone could be big enough, to harm and disrupt our industry.

DontGetCookedInASquatZigZiglarManufacturedHousingIndustryCommentaryDont LetOthersSelfLimitYouByActionInactionThinkingMHProNews

Honest growth is necessary and achievable. Don’t think slice of the pie, as so many in the MHC sector do.  The ground breaking of new projects that are taking place might, just might, signal the next wave of MHC activity. There will still be consolidators out there.

There will still be those who allegedly put their fingers on the scales to facilitate consolidation.

While we won’t comment today on pending or accomplished separations from certain prior sponsors, there are those who can (do) fill that vacuum.

So the best report and insights ever are about to come.

And there are those who need to heed MHI award winner, Marty Lavin’s, advice.

Follow the money. Pay more attention to what people say than what they do.

For those who follow us, you know we love this industry, know it, stand up for it, and will stand up and spotlight the negative things that take place within and without.

Click on some of the images above – if you haven’t already read those stories – and you will know what I mean.

We love Faith, Flag, Family, Freedom and Free Enterprise. The rest is commentary and details. Until next time…adios.  ##

Not Knowing – Manufactured Housing’s Glass Ceiling? – and Profitable Corporate Advancement

May 14th, 2014 No comments

The editorial plan here is always subject to change, and last night's "Industry Voices" guest post deserved more than a passing nod, before we dive into the MH Industry's 'glass ceiling' and more.

We don't know what we don't know.

Duh, right?

But we are often trapped – and thus limited – by what we don't know, similar to whatever we refuse to consider.

Beyond absolute Truths, which by definition are unchanging, there are relative truths or subjective truths. You may like beer better than vodka or red wine, or you may drink no alcohol at all; that's a subjective – or a little 't' truth, and it is subject to change. God exists – sorry Carl Sagan – is a big T truth – and you and I exist too.

As limiting as a bad habit is a lack of knowledge, or sometimes worse still, a refusal to consider something new from person or organization Z instead of person or organization A.

We may not 'like' on Facebook some person/cause/company/organization, but that doesn't mean they may not have a brilliant idea, or a break through action we can learn from.

In a trillion dollar U.S. housing market, manufactured housing could do more. How? What next steps?

With that tee up, please take a look at this guest column, and don't let the head-line fool you…

Global Eyes on Manufactured Housing's Movers, Shakers and News-makers Report

Publishing a column absolutely doesn't mean it will be read a lot! Professionals, researchers and investors like you have their own interests and agenda. So when this report linked below went live in our Industry In Focus reports, and rapidly began to rise near the top in readership, it tells us something!

interview-collage-mhpronews-com-c2014-lifestyle-factory-homes-llc-all-rights-reserved-33

http://www.mhpronews.com/home/industry-news/industry-in-focus/7540-global-eyes-on-manufacturedmodular-home-movers-shakers-and-news-makers

As you look at the report above, ask yourself, do manufactured home corporations have a glass ceiling? Let's stress – corporate – because in associations, females do very well, also among mom-and-pop independents as do women in the management ranks of companies too.

higher-jump-chiseled-imagewikicommons-mhpronews-com-c2014-lifestyle-factory-homes-llc-all-rights-reserved

Going higher…Upgrades!

As soon as you go higher, you can see farther. We have a number of upgrades we'd like to do, and would value the corporate and other support needed to make it happen, as it will benefit our industry and all involved. We are already Number 1, but this would be another set of significant steps ahead, that could allow us to continue to influence players (and help clients profit more) in and out of our great industry.

Updated and Upgraded Tornadoes and Manufactured Housing video

Currently at some 75,000 views in under a year, but tweaks and a new production could make the video linked below go viral.

We put this video together desk-top (no budget) a year ago; today with the skill set that our colleagues at ManufacturedHomes have, we could make a video truly eye-popping. Such a video would minimize – or at times, make this an asset rather than a liability – a routine issue with the media, regulators, and the home buying public.

Which means YOU and YOUR operation could see sales grow as a result.

Please see the current 'desktop production' video on the following page linked below, which some of our clients have already used to close sales with customers sitting on the proverbial fence.  Then imagine an improved version 2.0!

Launch the MH Discussion Forums

Professionals need a superior online discussion forum, which we've long planned for MHProNews. In fact, the forum tab is already in the top red menu on the home page, there as a place holder.

A good forum must allow the best and brightest to be involved.  Yet those often stay out of places like LinkedIn groups; some because they are concerned that some completely self-serving or jealous person will attack them just for spite's sake.

To address those kinds of concerns and opportunities, we would want to do a forum properly, that takes a modest additional budget – not just the technology (that's the easy part). But the dollars need for human moderation, required to address any nonsense caused and to rapidly be unpublished (deleted); then the offender gets warned or banned, as circumstances dictate.

Great items come from a good forum. Robust discussion, good!  Online bullying, not so good.

Would your organization sponsor it?

A good forum would be more useful for a company, organization and to the industry than many suspect.

Factory Built Home Video Channel, More…

Many other envisioned content or other upgrades could boost our industry – including exploring a manufactured housing video channel that would feature interviews, testimonials, myth busting facts and more – such and more items are on our pro-industry agenda.

Please check out this link, and let us know your interests.

See you this weekend, here on the Masthead blog?

Remember that together, we go higher, see farther and do more. ##

Manufactured Housing’s December to Remember

December 2nd, 2013 No comments

Snow has fallen. Turkey's have been gobble-gobbled. Another Black Friday has come and gone. Christmas shopping is in full swing. Holiday plans are made or are being firmed up.

Our friends, industry peers, clients, contacts and colleagues up north remind us why our moving to Florida in advance of winter was a good thing (at least for us ;-). We sit outside and look at palm trees in shorts (our son and my case) or a skirt (my better half's). But it's still unusual to see palm trees with Christmas lights!

Like millions of you, we love the run-up to Christmas (the Advent season). There is so much to wrap our minds and hearts around, and of course the presents being wrapped and unwrapped.

This is also the reflection and analysis time to look back and the look ahead that so often happens for professionals at this time of year. We are three years into our uptick in new manufactured home construction. What direction will we now go? Every day, in every way, by our actions – we decide!

These are some of the many reasons this will be a December to Remember.

But there are others, to be sure.

Between now and the Louisville Show's wrap up, a lot will happen on the political front in DC. Please see this report on where we stand on regulations, and my thanks to all those who have thanked us and are sharing this report with others. What we do (or fail to do) will also make this a December to Remember.

This month's A Cup of Coffee is with industry finance veteran, Richard 'Dick' Ernst. For unique “insider insights” on DC lobbying activities, for solutions on vexing financing questions, you won't find better. Please check it out and share widely. Scroll down and see his article tucked between all the other fine reads for our MH December to Remember.

Did you see the display home that Fairmont placed at the RV/MH Hall of Fame? Let's tip our hats and please check it out at the link shown above!

Speaking of hat tipping, I can't thank our featured writers and sponsors enough. Readership has soared in 2013, I'll have a formal report for readers soon. Team work and industry support makes all that we do here at MHProNews possible! Please support those who support this, the factory built housing industry's runaway #1 trade journal.

Speaking of thanks, my thanks to those who commented, emailed, posted on their Facebook pages our Masthead Thanksgiving reflection.

We have 15 fine reads for your insight and enjoyment this month!

I'd be remiss if I didn't take a few words to point out that my better half joined us this month, with her first – debut! – column, Shopping with Soheyla!

Yes, I'm partial, but those of you who have gotten to know my better half's personality know that she is a not-to-be-forgotten delight. Some of that may shine through in her December to Remember column. I confess I'm a little nervous that Soheyla (pronounced So Hey La, just like it is spelled) will blow past me in popularity as time goes on, or that she will give away too many insights about moi…okay, I've said it, now we can move on!

With no further adieu, here is our 2013 December to Remember line up. Do let us know what you think.
