Surprising Non-Partisan Revelations, Opportunities, Controversies Could Decide 2020 Campaigns – Affordable Housing, Antitrust, Wealth Inequality, and Manufactured Homes

Senator Cory Booker (NJ-D), 2020 Democratic Presidential hopeful, President Donald J. Trump, and Vice President Mike Pence have used a similar phrase. “Enforce…the law.”

 

Senator Bernie Sanders, another 2020 Democratic Presidential nomination candidate and President of the United States (POTUS) Trump have similarly used a phrase, “the system is rigged,” while differing on how to unrig the system.

Warren Buffett –

  • perhaps the third richest person on the planet,
  • well known Democratic supporter,
  • Chairman of the Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate that includes Clayton Homes, 21st Mortgage Corporation, and other brands involved in affordable manufactured homes –

– said the following.

Don’t jump to conclusions.  By definition, only those with an open mind can be reasoned with.

 

The Code

People say things for a variety of reasons. Some things are said that are simply a statement of what is – or appears to be – objectively true.

The quote from Buffett – with whose strategic Moat and several other business practices this writer disagrees with on ethical and legal grounds – nevertheless spoke the bare-knuckles truth in the AZ  Quote immediately above.  It’s an example of separating wheat from chaff, with all people, organizations, and things.

Some statements are made in a more slippery fashion. It’s code.

Things are said that may sound appealing, but when carefully examined, may only be a veneer for obscuring reality or misleading people in a way that the speaker believed will benefit himself/herself, their group, or organization.

Discerning what is sincere from what is coded language is thus imperative in an era in which the majority – per public polling – now believe that the phrase ‘Fake News’ represents something quite real.

Surveys also suggest that tens of millions believe that the American system is rigged.

For an example of both of those last two sentences. Right or wrong, millions of Americans were led to believe that the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians to win the 2016 election. But at least four federal investigations have disproven that claim, counting the one led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller which included a team of attorneys made up of Democrats and Clinton-connected supporters. Mueller’s legal conclusion, “no collusion.” No Americans were charged with colluding with Russians in connection to the 2016 campaign.  The claimed ‘obstruction’ item debate is for another time.

We are living in an Orwellian era. Tens of millions believe things that are demonstrably untrue. Those millions can vote with the same weight to their ballot as your vote or mine carries on Election Day.

That outlines slivers of vexing realities. But ironically, those factors hold a key to understanding how to win – or lose – the 2020 presidential and congressional races.

 

The College…

Some think the Electoral College system established by the U.S. Constitution is flawed. Others think the Electoral College represents the enduring genius of the founders. Whichever way you see it, the reality is at the state and Congressional district levels, the popular vote will rule.

America can be divided in a variety of ways. Race, gender, religion, political viewpoints, sexual orientation, income brackets, homeowners vs. renters, have vs. have nots. These are just some of the ways that political and corporate thinkers view the national scene.

Of the groups below, owners of conventional housing make up the largest category. But renters – or even owners of mobile/manufactured homes – could easily be the ‘swing vote’ in tight races.

  • Homeowners – “In 2018, there were about 127.59 million households in the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a household consists of all the people who occupy a housing unit,” per Statista.
  • Renters – 111 million in 2018, per Apartment List.
  • Mobile/Manufactured Homeowners – some 22 million, per the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI)

HUD Secretary Ben Carson, and 2020 Election Game-Changing Issues

The next bulleted issues have heated up. How they are handled by candidates and office holders could influence the votes of millions.

In many ‘battleground’ states, only a few percentage points are necessary for victory. As little as 1 or 2 percent in some states or districts could decide an electoral contest in 2020, as experts and keen observers know.

The 2020 game is on. It has been since the 2016 and 2018 election results were known. Let’s review some hot topics and see how they may hold the key to victory for politicos in tough intra-or inter major party – or even independently run – electoral contests.

 

  • Consolidation, monopolization, and antitrust. Monopolistic power influences markets. That in turn can harm smaller firms that traditionally create the most jobs. That means monopolization can harm the interests of workers and compensation. One must bear in mind, that per experts, there are several legal tests that may trigger antitrust law. Sheer size may or may not trigger antitrust law in America, but certain ‘bad behaviors’ can. The left and right increasingly agree that certain firms, often the so-called FAANG or tech giants, may be exercising monopolistic power that violates one or more provisions of antitrust or other laws.  In manufactured housing, beyond those tech overlords, Berkshire Hathaway – parent to Clayton Homes, 21st Mortgage and other companies – is a topic of concern. But so is the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI), which is being credibly alleged to fostering consolidation. Given multiple opportunities to explain away evidence related to those concerns, the Omaha’s Berkshire brands that are headquartered in the Knoxville, TN metro and Arlington, VA based MHI have declined comment on issues like those documented here, here, here, here, and here.
  • HUD Secretary Ben Carson – affordable housing, homelessness, and some 1/3 of Americans renting with dramatically reduced chances for wealth accumulation. By chance and/or by intent, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson, M.D., has spotlighted in recent weeks a surprising solution to the affordable housing crisis, as a video by left-of-center Bloomberg with other commentary posted here reflects. Much of what Secretary Carson has said and done is factually spot on. It should be widely embraced by the manufactured home industry’s dominant firms and MHI. Which is why it may seem odd at first that those same firms that Dr. Carsons’ recent address in New Orleans and his June 1-5th Innovative Housing Summit (IHS) on the National Mall in Washington, DC have given only a token or fig leaf support to messages and efforts that on the surface seem so useful to them.
  • There are, however, two words missing from Secretary Carson’s efforts that are legal in nature. Those two words, “enhanced preemption” could hold the key to overcoming most regulatory, zoning, and placement hurdles that are locking millions out of potential affordable home ownership, and/or lower cost rentals. The fact that Secretary Carson seems to be unaware of “enhanced preemption” – which officials at HUD have declined responding to that concern – raises a ‘swamp’ or crony capitalist question. Have major companies, MHI, and officials at HUD obscured or withheld key truths that could help Secretary Carson rapidly unlock the door to home ownership opportunities for millions? Without the need for new legislation? If so, how that topic is handled in the next few months may tilt the outcome of the 2020 races in numerous states. Why?
  • Because wealth inequality and a growing distrust of capitalism are other key issues, often more so among millennials. Notably, “enforcing the law” and properly exposing a “rigged system” that has sprouted “fake news” are keys to unlocking those doors. Because at its root, the interest in ‘socialism’ is perhaps best understood as concerns over bad behavior by uber capitalists that have manipulated the system to their own benefit.  That’s Buffett’s point, in the pull quote, further above.

 

Secretary Carson is not alone in having elevated the value of modern manufactured homes. As a report linked below makes clear, manufactured homes – properly understood – are safer, stronger, more appealing, and are often embraced in a bipartisan way.

 

 

The MHI video below captures a sense of that, by showcasing legislators from both major parties praising what they toured on the National Mall at IHS last week.

The report linked here could potentially attract numbers across the left-right divides.  Rephrased, these concept – properly understood – can tap into millins of voters that they impact, and thus could help win elections. The strategies outlined are legal ones that don’t require changing or passing any new laws.

Let’s be blunt. Manufactured homes evoke stereotypical images that Secretary Carson is seeking to debunk, based upon demonstrable facts. There are obviously those who believe they benefit from those stereotypes of manufactured homes as ‘trailers’ in ‘trailer parks’ that they may mistakenly call ‘mobile homes’ when there have been no mobile homes built in the USA since June 15, 1976.

 

 

If millions of Americans knew the facts about manufactured homes, outlined in the 2018 reports above and below, concerns held by millions of conventional housing owners would melt.

 

 

It is in the interest of the long-term economic interests of the vast majority of Americans for their to be more affordable housing, and more affordable home ownership. Given those evidence-based truths, how does one explain the fact that the realities about manufactured homes has become so obscured?  Interesting and uncontested fact prove useful in answering that query.

First, since Warren Buffett made the decision to buy Clayton Homes, manufactured housing as an industry has shrunk in size.

Buffett led-Berkshire Hathaway clearly has the capital, and the credit lines needed, to fund any sort of educational and/or marketing campaign that their wholly owned subsidiary Clayton Homes may desire. So how does one explain fewer manufactured home sales in 2018 than in 2003, when Berkshire first acquired Clayton Homes and their affiliated lending? How does one explain that in 2019, year over year manufactured home shipments are declining – now for 8 straight months – during an affordable housing crisis?

 

Logically, it is difficult to dispute that Berkshire Hathaway has the cash, expertise available, media assets, and media influence necessary for their organization to single-handedly debunk the very concerns about manufactured homes that Secretary Carson’s efforts in 2019 and previously are attempting.  Buffett led-Berkshire had $112 billion cash-on-hand in February, 2019, per the Motley Fool investor website. Are we to believe that a tiny fraction of that couldn’t be allocated to changing the dynamics of manufactured housing?

Which begs the question, why has manufactured housing not received that kind of support from Berkshire?

It must be noted that Kevin Clayton, President and CEO of Clayton Homes, brags in a video posted on the report linked here that “Warren” told him that they have ‘plenty of money’ to do whatever they need or want. In that same 2011 video, Kevin said they were planning an image and educational campaign.  What happened to that effort? That same video made a point that Secretary Carson made last week, about how ‘resilient’ manufactured homes that are properly installed are during a windstorm. It is often older ‘mobile homes’ that were not properly anchored that are the subject of media headlines, and those are only a few a year to a few dozen, out of some 8.8 million units. Fact – dying in a bath tub, shower, car, or boat are far more common than dying in a mobile or manufactured home hit by a tornado or hurricane.

So why is there so much misleading impressions and misinformation?  Why has the RV industry, to pick but one possible comparison, surpassed manufactured housing by some 5 to 1 since 1998, when manufactured homes used to outsell RVs 3 to 2?

Manufactured housing is demonstrably underperforming. 20 years ago, manufactured homes outsold RVs by about 3 to 2. Today, RVs outsell manufactured homes by some 5 to 1. Manufactured homes are normally purchased for full time living, many RVs are for recreational or part time living. Many RVs – which are towable as well as motorized – can be higher total cost than manufactured homes. The cost per square foot for a manufactured home is routinely lower.

 

To answer such questions, one must first grasp that millions of Buffett’s donations have flowed via ‘dark money’ channels through various left-wing nonprofits into efforts that have literally attacked manufactured housing business interests. That in turn means that Buffett has funded both sides of several political and image fights in manufactured housing.  A closer look at the facts reveals that by 2005, controversies involving Clayton Homes have periodically sparked outrage that has cast a shadow over manufactured housing. Mainstream media videos, that span the left-right divide, are posted below that make the point.

No one in the Omaha-Knoxville-Arlington axis has yet to deny the evidence from the articles linked herein.

Facts and patterns of behavior, when laid out and connected in a puzzle-like fashion fit together to establish the following image.

By restricting or diverting access to capital in various ways, such as the one linked here as well as other possible examples – including possible FHA Title I and Title II, USDA, VA and other reforms – Clayton Homes has gone from 13 percent market share in 2003 to some 48 to 50 percent market share by 2018, depending on whose data you use.

While several allegations of monopolistic practices have been made against Clayton Homes and Berkshire Hathaway, this website and our sister site are the only ones to date known to have produced documentary evidence, coupled with logic, and complimentary data. 

 

Rephrased, by constricting the market Buffett led Berkshire’s Clayton Homes, 21st and other lenders – with a wink and a nod by MHI – consolidated the market at a discounted value.

It is precisely that kind of behavior that millions of millennials and others find distasteful about ‘capitalism’ that makes ‘socialism’ seem appealing to them. But that is a distortion of capitalism, it is crony or corrupted crony or vulture capitalism, quite different from free enterprise.

There are a few relatively simple concepts that if existing laws were applied could tip the 2020 election.

There is a case to be made that certain ‘big boy’ companies that dominate MHI are battling forces that are fueled by Buffett’s documented donations to specific nonprofits. Buffett’s money is demonstrably traced to both sides of several fights. Even if it was legal, it is arguably Machiavellian. There has been no whimper from Berkshire dominated MHI about that problem.

Furthermore, the last 3 MHI Chairman have oddly all had some sort of legal scandal attached to them. Coincidence?

There are candidates in both major parties that may well be willing to take on such topics that are only thorny because they deal with some of the richest people and corporations in America and the world.

Perhaps no one in manufactured housing has interviewed more unpaid third-parties – including home owners – like the ones below, to provide others with an objective perspective of how the masses and experts think about manufactured home living.  While our sites and videos have sponsors, that doesn’t change what unpaid and unrewarded people have said.  The views shared below are common, not the exception.  The husband in this video is an engineer, the wife, a professional as well. Summary

There is a growing agreement that spans the left-right political and media divisions in America that the United States faces a growing crisis in affordable housing.

There is a similarly growing agreement between voices in the two major parties that the consolidation or monopolization of varied U.S. economic sectors is occurring. Each of these trends are impacting manufactured homes, the millions who live in them, and those working or investing in the manufactured housing industry.

Some arguably believe they benefit from these trends. It is no surprise that those will raise no voice of alarm. Indeed, some of them will deny or attempt to obscure the notion that increasingly self-evident problems exist. For more on that, see some of the linked related reports, further below the byline and notices.

Stating the obvious can clarify issues. Citing facts, reasoned, and evidence-based allegations herein can orient those of good will that seek the greater good of the American public.  That in turn benefits thousands of individual business owners, and untold thousands of investors.

To oversimplify, relatively few benefit from the trends and concerns outlined herein, while the vast majority of Americans are being harmed. So, there is natural tension.

Millions in lobbying dollars and other forms of influence peddling are flowing in an attempt to avert the serious need to investigate these problems  Antitrust, and other legal measures that are already law could be used to break up and/or otherwise punish bad actors of which political parties they may be currying favor.

Why is such a scheme even contemplated?

Because housing is over a trillion dollar a year industry.

The ‘secrets hiding in plain sight’ outlined herein could be worth billions annually to those who have purportedly manipulated the system.

Our sources tell us that these issues are on several federal agency radars. The Knoxville metro news report is but one example. Keep in mind that the Seattle Times, and our own sources, indicate that there are other federal investigations beyond those noted in the next video.

 

 

Senator Elizabeth Warren and several 2020 Democrats have raised similar issues. The Trump Administration has recently been reported to be investigating big tech, but what has not yet been reported in the mainstream is any investigation into possibly corrupt or illegal actions by Berkshire Hathaway that is costing Americans a fortune.

Congress should hold public hearings on these matters.  Why?

Because the harm that has been done is public harm. Thousands of independent, small businesses have been harmed by such challenges. Calling in leaders like Warren Buffett, Kevin Clayton, Tim Williams, Joe Stegmayer, Nathan Smith, Richard ‘Dick’ Jennison, Lesli Gooch, and Jason Boehlert – among others – to testify under oath before Congressional committees in the House and Senate could prove revealing.

It may also educate the public in the various ways that Secretary Carson has been promoting, that could boost economic opportunities and affordable housing options that could lift the boats of millions of Americans.

 

 

Carson has made himself available to sources across the left-right media divide to promote both Opportunity Zones, but also manufactured homes. He’s woven these issues together, arguably because they interlace.

There are debatably 3 possible scenarios that explain how a key solution to the affordable housing crisis that Secretary Carson and others have correctly said includes manufactured homes could be so misunderstood.

  • One must either believe that one of the smartest and most successful business investors of all time can’t figure out how to support Clayton Homes and their executive team in growing the sales of manufactured housing, OR
  • One must believe that Berkshire, Clayton, and the professionals at MHI are incompetent; neither of those two bullets makes sense.
  • Or one must believe that there is a hidden agenda. That the system has arguably been rigged and manipulated in ways to obscure the truth that gives the “Illusion of Motion” without delivering any significant results. That in turn allows Buffett to consolidate the industry at a discount.

 

 

 

In fact, the recent IHS 2019 at the National Mall reveals that no BH Media group publication has as of yesterday covered the event. Why not? Why didn’t MHI strongly promote that event, not to their members, but to the general public? Why doesn’t MHI have Secretary Carson’s speech in New Orleans – delivered to their own group – posted in full and prominently on their website. Are they inept? Incapable? Coincidence — or is it bullet #3 above? See the related reports below for more on these queries and the surprising facts.

We’ve researched and documented such concerns, layer by layer, over the course of several years. We’ve given the Omaha-Knoxville-Arlington axis repeated opportunities to respond, as they used to do promptly just two years ago. But since then, they’ve gone silent in the face of these evidence-based inquires.

The general public is arguably harmed by these challenges.  Thousands of independent businesses – some that were successful for decades – folded after the events linked here and since.  MHI’s own president took a thinly veiled backhanded slap at them, in his own exit message.

There are more than enough reasons for federal and/or state agencies, and for Congress, to investigate the concerns that are costing the nation’s citizens tens to hundreds of billions of dollars a year. It could be a scheme so bold that it makes Bernie Madoff look like a piker.

This isn’t a Ponzi scheme, as was the case of Madoff. Rather, this is arguably an antitrust violation to rig the solution to the affordable housing crisis that some 4 to 12 people could have carried out. Using Buffett’s well professed patience, their possible payoff could be in the tens of billions annually. That sounds suspiciously like possible motivation to me.

Why didn’t MHI follow this pull quote from their own prior chairman? Or was that statement just posturing?

Hold the headline for 125 words. Poisoning the well. Salting the fields. Those are but two of several ancient methods some enemies used to harm their opponents. The notion behind those vile tactics was if you could kill off their drinkable water or their food supply, someone could effectively destroy their enemy.

 

Other devious, ancient tactics are:

  • scapegoating,
  • tapping into prejudice(s),
  • obscuring the truth,
  • the big lie,
  • making numbers of people fear doing or saying something that is normally quite natural.
  • Still other tactics are buying or enticing someone to become effectively a ‘Quisling’ or ‘Benedict Arnold.’

Before proceeding, let me stress that this writer is a political independent. Affordable housing ideally ought to be a non-partisan or bi-partisan issue. My friends and family include Democrats, Republicans, libertarians, other minor parties, and the droves that could care less about politics. While I hold personal views on matters of faith, my friends and colleagues include self-professed atheists, agnostics, Buddhist, Bahai, Muslims, Jews, New Age, and oh yes, one of several branches of Christianity.

That said, the truth, evidence, reason, experience, logic, and history are among the intellectual drivers for this writer and our LLCs digital publications. Earning and keeping the biggest professional audience of its kind in our industry didn’t happen by accident. Or as a top man of a publicly traded firm said during the Tunica Show, he’s happy his company isn’t one of those we’re investigating, a back handed compliment. He went on to say that we lay out a case step-by-step in an evidence-based fashion that makes sense once an article is digested.

That corporate leader isn’t alone. Professionals from firms of all sizes have made this the number one digital platform of its kind in our industry’s history. Not bragging, just the facts made possible by the various tips, sources, and contributions of so many others.

 

 

HUD Secretary Ben Carson’s Affordable Housing Educational Offensive

First, let’s acknowledge that a genius in one field doesn’t make someone all-knowing about other subjects. All truth is learned from another in some form or fashion. Before one knows the truth about any given subject, one is by definition ‘ignorant.’

That’s reality, not a slur.

Before becoming a political candidate for the White House as a Republican in the 2016 election cycle, the current Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) – Ben Carson, MD – was a world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon. This writer was among those who grew up hearing amazing-but-true stories of the accomplishments of Dr. Carson. Carson in several ways epitomized the American Dream of going from rags to riches.

His is a story of discipline, endurance to overcome the odds, and the rewards that can come in a free market society that rewards honest accomplishments. So, of course Dr. Carson opposes socialism, and celebrates the American Way.

In an era when being a black man was considered to be automatically a Democrat, Carson – not unlike Justice Clarence Thomas, Alan Keyes, Thomas Sowell, Alveda King, Carol Swain, Walter Williams or scores of others – came to believe that what modern Democrats embraced ran counter to many of the values that made America great. That’s not a slam on Democrats as individuals, but it is to question a party leaders that drifted from Democratic President John F. Kennedy’s professed anti-communism and tax cutting to one that increasingly embraces socialism and redistribution of wealth schemes.

Let’s note there have been GOP party issues I won’t go into now that kept me from embracing their views in toto as well. Each party – in some form or fashion – has something worthy of consideration. This writer, therefor, strives to support those who line up with proven historic principles.

 

Mocked!

There are times when we all say or do something inadvertently that if magnified and mocked, can be weaponized to create an illusion of ineptitude. Mocking someone can seemingly soil even the most gifted. Do that on national TV, social media, or cable news, and you can turn a truly wise or intelligent person into someone that can be made to appear clumsy. The “OREO” vs. “REO” item that made headlines about Secretary Carson a few weeks ago is an example of that in action.

Secretary Carson profoundly identified that mockery tactic on national TV spot posted below as borrowed from the pages of Saul Alinsky, author of Rules for Radicals. Alinsky and Hillary Rodham – the future Mrs. Clinton – were pen pals, and Hillary did a college paper on Alinsky and his methods. To dot the i on slips of the lip or honest mistakes, it’s as wrong to mock former President Barack Hussein Obama for saying 57 instead of 50 states, as it is to mock Secretary Carson for not hearing REO correctly during a somewhat raucous congressional hearing.

 

 

Stuff happens, but mature or fair-mined people don’t mock another for a simple misunderstanding.

Cheap shots at such slips are the tools of those with a weak argument. Which brings us to a reality that Secretary Carson well knows. The truth can be obscured or even turned on its head by a variety of means.

Before turning to affordable housing, let’s give but one more example of obscuring the truth. Prior to launching the campaign that led him to becoming the 45th president, try to find someone of stature who accused Donald J. Trump of racism or misogyny. The Trump Organization famously promoted women as easily as a man. There are scores of people like Tiger Woods, Kanye West, or Secretary Carson, that have or would attest to the fact that President Trump is no racist. Trump appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s program several times. Did she think him a racist then? If so, why did Oprah have him on…was she promoting racism or a racist? Of course not. But repeat a lie often enough, and a certain number will believe it.

Repeat a lie with millions hearing or reading it often enough, and millions will believe that lie.

With those useful analogies and examples, now let’s turn to Secretary Carson’s lessons on affordable housing.  Note that in the video below, as Secretary Carson speaks about manufactured homes and windstorm resistance, Maria Bartiromo makes a sound, as if his statement caught her by surprise.  One might think that the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) might want this video on their website.  More on that later.

 

 

Secretary Carson and Affordable Housing

First, Secretary Carson begins with a free enterprise mindset. As a scientist – because that’s what a physician is – Dr. Carson is by training evidence, reason, goal, and solution oriented.

Reverend Donald Tye, Jr. told me something profoundly insightful, which we’ve held until now. Tye said that when he spent time working in social programs to help the disadvantaged, an odd shift can occur among those serving the needy. A job exists in government or a nonprofit in part because there are poor or other circumstantially disadvantaged individuals. Solving the underlying problem would eliminate jobs. Ouch, but that’s a deeply insightful point.

Rephrased, Rev. Tye was telling me that solving poverty was not the goal for many in a nonprofit or governmental role.  Ouch, that’s painful to ponder, but it’s a notion that at a minimum merits consideration.

Carson has been asked to shrink the budget at HUD, as have others in various federal agencies in the Trump Administration. Shrinking HUD’s budget creates political enemies among those who benefit from the existence of programs and poverty. It should be common sense – besides being federal law – that illegal aliens don’t qualify for housing assistance, a topic mentioned in the first right-of-center Fox Business video above. That’s but one of many issues that some on the left have attempted to manipulate facts that creates a narrative that they can weaponize against Secretary Carson.

Carson, by a variety of means, has learned several things about manufactured housing. That’s come in part from trade associations, but also from HUD internal, and other sources.

Carson is not necessarily an expert, but he is intelligent. It is common sense that a home built in a factory is less costly than one built more slowly outdoors. Traditional ‘site building’ is subject to the weather, theft, subcontractors that don’t always show up when expected, inspections that get delayed, permitting, and a raft of issues that cost time and money. Build a single car in a driveway and see how much more expensive that one car is than one essentially identical that’s built on a factory assembly line.

Factory-building is common sense.

Secretary Carson doesn’t have to be a gifted genius to get that reality. Common sense ought to be enough.

In fairness, there is no doubt that Secretary Carson has learned some valuable insights from members of several different associations. I’d like to contemplate the good doctor as thinking for himself – as a scientist would – and not as a puppet for Berkshire Hathaway or their de facto association mouthpiece, based in Arlington, VA. Carson surely knows who Warren Buffett is better than most, because – as noted – he knows who Saul Alinsky is, of whom most Americans know nothing.

Carson, once he begins to learn the truth about manufactured homes, does what many do. He and others get excited about it. Carson seems to sincerely want to tell others, the best way his time and other demands allows him to do. That desire to share good news is common, until it is beat out of someone.

Now, sharing good news about manufactured homes as a tool in the chest for solving the affordable housing crisis may seem to fit what a manufactured housing trade association would – or should – want.

 

 

But what Secretary Carson – perhaps inadvertently, perhaps by intent – has done is reveal the utter purported hypocrisy of the Arlington, VA based Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI). How so?

Manufactured housing is now in its 8th month of year-over-year declining production. When one grasps the reality of what Secretary Carson says, it begs the question the Urban Institute asked in January 2018. Manufactured homes could help solve the affordable housing crisis, so why aren’t more HUD Code manufactured homes being sold?

There are over two decades of third-party research that tells the story of HUD Code manufactured homes. That research is largely absent from the MHI website. Why?  Why doesn’t MHI have a page on their website with tons of third party research, as we have established on MHLivingNews?

 

 

Last year, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) Certified Business Economist (CBE) Scholastica ‘Gay’ Cororaton wrote a fascinating research report that debunks large swaths of the misinformation that exists about manufactured homes. At least one MHI vice president took part in that research process, because she, I, and Mark Weiss from the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform are among those that NAR’s Cororaton cited in her first footnote on page 48. That highly useful NAR research by Cororaton isn’t found on MHI’s website. Why not? Wouldn’t third-party evidence which debunks outdated or errant notions help convince more Americans hungry for affordable housing to buy a manufactured home?

Of course, it would. Third-party endorsement, by whatever terminology or nomenclature one may use, has been powerful method for convincing skeptics for ages. A genuine third-party research that debunks fallacies goes to the heart of the quotes below, from a former MHI chairman, and a controversial but savvy MHI member.

Then, MHI Chairman when this comment was made. So why doesn’t MHI follow this prudent advice? Why as MHI chair, did Williams mandate doing what he said was a good argument? MHI has a full time PR person. What is that PR person doing, if not refuting incorrect reports, and promoting good news?

Decio’s question begs the question. Why is manufactured housing a secret at all? What is the job of MHI? 20 years ago, manufactured homes outsold RVs by about 3 to 2. Today, RVs outsell manufactured homes by some 5 to 1. Manufactured homes are normally purchased for full time living, many RVs are for recreational or part time living. Many RVs – which are towable as well as motorized – can be higher than a manufactured home. The cost per square foot for a manufactured home is routinely lower, as Secretary Carson has stressed.  So why is the industry underperforming?

Since Berkshire bought Clayton after the third year, the industry has overall performed at a lower level than they year that Buffett made the deal to buy Clayton homes in 2003. I’ve not spoken to Secretary Carson. So, there is a bit of supposition here, based upon years of my reading and listening to the famous gentleman. At some point, Carson surely must wonder – why aren’t more manufactured homes being sold?  Why didn’t his predecessor at HUD, who likewise praised manufactured homes, actively promote manufactured housing as I’m trying to do?

Secretary Carson is Exposing MHI and Berkshire Hathaway MH Brands

Secretary Carson has exposed MHI and Berkshire Hathaway in this fashion.  A normal trade group would be celebrating what he said to them on May 7, 2019. There are numerous, powerful, pull quotes from his speech.

But no, now almost a month after the address by Carson, that speech is still not found on MHI’s website.

After weeks of our hammering that point, last Thursday, MHI finally posted a brief notice on an interior page about the Innovation in Housing event that Secretary Carson, HUD and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) are promoting. They sent out a message to their members via email with a few pull quotes from Dr. Carson’s 5.7.2019 address, to let their members know how great MHI is. That’s become MHI’s photo op campaign.

But after bragging to their members about ‘getting’ Carson two years in a row, they failed to promote his fine address this year or last on their own website.  Where is the logic there?  Doesn’t that make the point that Frank Rolfe and others have raised about failing to properly promote the industry?

MHI also apparently failed to use their media contacts to promote the good insights Carson has been making in mainstream news appearance exemplified by some videos shown on this page. The same was true in the run-up to the Innovation in Housing showcase that has 3 HUD Code manufactured homes on display.

It’s not the first such failure by MHI. Rather, it is only the most recent, as other examples posted above reflect.

Restated, there is a pattern of behavior that MHI has exhibited for years. It comes down to only a few logical possibilities. Pardon what will seem blunt, but let’s just state them. Among the logical possibilities:

  • MHI – their staff – are inept.
  • MHI – their staff – are incompetent.
  • MHI – their staff – posture intelligent behavior to their members, but fail to effectively do so with the general public.

 

Let’s bear in mind that the association’s staff are intelligent people.

 

 

Let’s further keep in mind that the association’s staff do what the MHI Executive Committee tells them to do. Put 3 stars next to that point.

Sam Landy, JD, UMH Properties President and CEO, said at an MHI meeting to a half-dozen or so listening to him a few years ago words to the effect that ‘there seems to be a lot of meetings, but that not much actually gets accomplished.’

Some MHI corporate members stopped going to many of their meetings, and send a delegate instead, for the same reason Landy stated.

Note that MHI’s 990s make it clear that events and meetings are a profit center for the organization. That’s fine, so long as the organization is doing something worthwhile to promote their stated mission.

There are some who do benefit from MHI, but not in the normal association manner. The evidence suggests that MHI as it has operated in the Berkshire Hathaway era (since 2003) as a tool for corporate consolidation. By appearing to industry members to do what a normal national association should do, they can effectively collect dues and PAC contributions from independents. That also provides opportunities for larger companies to acquire smaller ones.

 

Reading, viewing, asking the right questions, observing, and listening. These are keys to adaptive success.

 

How Industry Underperformance Benefits Berkshire and “The Big Boys” in Manufactured Housing

Because the industry is de facto underperforming, based upon historic data and the potential demand, it means that those who have sold out in the last 15 years have done so at a discounted value. Doesn’t that nicely fit what Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger want? Isn’t that what investors who follow Buffett call an undervalued acquisition?

By suppressing the positive truth about manufactured housing, in direct and indirect ways, the powers that be in MHVille – exemplified, but not limited to, Omaha and Knoxville metro based firms – have turned the Arlington based MHI into a tool for consolidation that can readily escape normal regulatory scrutiny. It’s a slow-motion scheme. MHI appears to do what associations do.  But they don’t make significant progress. It is a model predicated on the industry underperforming.

Or Neal Haney, who as previously was noted, led numbers of this colleagues out of MHI, saying that they failed to represent their interests.

Or Bob Crawford, who on stage and in an entirely unplanned, explained to dozens of industry professionals why MHI was at best a 5 out of 10 in performance. Where so come from, that earns you an “F,” a failing grade.  Keep in mind, this is a flashback to near the end of the Obama administration era.

 

 

Mark Weiss, JD, is the President and CEO of the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR). He aptly called what MHI does the “Illusion of Motion.”

 

Former MHI member and award winner Marty Lavin, JD, may have shrewdly understood this well before others did. For years, he said in writing or in meetings, the following.

Does Secretary Carson get all of this? I can’t say, because I don’t know him personally. I do know that HUD’s press office has arguably done all that they can to keep me and our publication away from Secretary Carson. Specifically, let me point the finger at HUD’s Brian Sullivan, who is either de facto working for MHI, or for some other reason fails to do what is in HUD’s – and Dr. Carson’s – and the Trump Administration’s goals of saving taxpayer dollars best interests.  There is no logical reason that Sullivan would have, since we have be consistent public supporters of Secretary Carson since he was first nominated.

No one in MHVille could give Secretary Carson a better chance to talk directly to the largest audience of industry’s professionals of all sizes than this author and our digital trade media platforms. Furthermore, on MHLivingNews, Carson could be reaching current and potential manufactured home owners. That’s what Carson says he wants.  So, if Sullivan is smart, he knows these things.

So why has Sullivan foiled every effort to date to make that happen? We’ll let that question hang, perhaps Mr. Sullivan will tell us, but what he’s said to date is intellectual mush.

One doesn’t have to believe in a grand conspiracy to recognize that people in the public sector may someday want to work in the private sector. Who better to work for later in life than a Berkshire Hathaway brand?

Further, former Office of Manufactured Housing Program (OMHP) Pam Danner, JD, was an Obama era appointee, with similar political views as the former 44th president.  Secretary Carson said that the regulations he reviewed were “ridiculous” in Senate testimony in 2018, and praised the evolution of manufactured homes as “amazing.” That was an indirect way of scolding Danner’s leadership.

 

 

 

Danner, per our sources, was inserted into her role at HUD by allies of the Berkshire brands.

What a growing number of professionals and legislators realize is the following.

 

  • The power to tax is the power to destroy. The more complex the tax laws, the better for big businesses. The more complex the tax laws, the harder it is on small businesses.
  • The power to regulate is the power to destroy. It’s another point that controversial MHI members Frank and Dave made just days ago. It’s a point we’ve made for years.
  • Cut businesses of from capital and financing, and you limit or kill businesses off. Combined with the second bullet above, if you get industry members to fight no-win battles like the now dead Preserving Access to Manufactured Housing Act – which Frank Rolfe said his congressman told him was a waste of time in the Inside MH video posted above – and you will over time cause some to quit, sell out, or close up entirely. All of those are useful for a stealth monopolist. This writer recently referred to that tactic as the classic boxer’s “Rope-a-Dope” tactic, and I confess that I fell for it for a time too.
  • Evidence exists that that Berkshire, Clayton Homes, 21st did cut off lending. Neither of those brands, nor MHI, have yet to debunk – or even try – the documents, direct quotes, video and related evidence that in 2009 a blatant ‘smoking gun’ style antitrust action occurred during the aftermath of the financial crisis. We use the word alleged, because that’s what’s proper. But antitrust attorneys we’ve shown this to that’s looked carefully has said there looks to be a reasonable case, learn that at the link here.
  • Last for now, but not least, Buffett’s money has been used to fund both sides of several fights, and it has routinely been MHI that ‘loses’ in the battles. We’ve followed the ‘dark money’ trail, see that linked below.

So with that series of examples of how to weaponize an industry, why would it be a surprise if the revolving door between government and the private sector – as well documented as that is – has also been used by the big boys of MHVille? Again, HUD’s Sullivan will be invited to reply.

But he – and perhaps HUD’s Teresa Payne, both of whom are nice people – are arguably sandbagging Secretary Carson from achieving what he claims to want to do.  The arguable alternative is that Carson is doing an elaborate head fake, and Sullivan and Payne are covering for their boss.  I’m not buying that, but time will tell.

Manufactured housing is underperforming. That harms most, save a few consolidators.

Let me hit one more note we’ve not hit before.  There are companies that may disagree with Berkshire, with Warren Buffett, or with their politics. They may go along out of fear of retaliation, because our industry readers know the purported attempts by those in league with the Omaha-Knoxville-Arlington axis to punish those who would publicly oppose them.

But some could stand up and fight, but don’t. They currently have enough capital, enough power to resist. But they don’t. Why?

Because they are willing to allow the Berkshire brands to consolidate the industry, thinking that it helps them in an indirect fashion. Ouch, but I’ve heard that with my own ears from sources who know and are doing that very thing.

And Buffet and Munger don’t even need to know the vast majority of the people being impacted, so long as their minions in Knoxville and beyond are putting the principles of their strategic Moat is being put to work.

Why We Believe Carson’s at Least Partially in the Dark…

Enhanced Preemption is a provision of the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000. As the name implies, it gives HUD Code manufactured homes preemption from a host of local or state regulatory mandates. It is in principle part of how the HUD Code saves a builder money, which in turn saves a home buyer money.

MHI mentions “enhanced preemption” not at all in their website. Why not?

By contrast, you’d find over a dozen articles on MHARR’s website about enhanced preemption.  MHI has been online about 10x longer than MHARR.  How to explain this disparity?  Note that MHI rebuilt its website about 3 years ago, and topics that may have existed before, could have been purged at that time.

So when MHI shows all of these photo ops with HUD’s Brian Montgomery, HUD Secretary Carson, or others, do their meeting minutes reflect that they’ve raised the issue with HUD?  Because if so, in a snap, perhaps the single biggest challenge to sales growth would be remedied.

There is no need to pass a new law, when good existing laws are going unfulfilled.  The same is true on the Duty to Serve. MHI has promoted the Clayton-backed ‘new class’ of homes, but has not pushed for full implementation of the Duty to Serve (DTS) by the Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs) on all HUD Code manufactured homes.

There is no longer any rationale that the GSEs can use to avoid the implementation of DTS.  Why?  Because Triad Financial, Credit Human, 21st Mortgage, Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance (VMF) have proven for years that they can do substantiable lending. Furthermore, the FHFA and NAR research that both say that manufactured homes can and do appreciate should be all the reasons needed for the GSEs to do what the Housing and Economic Recovery Act (HERA 2008) requires.

But that would cost Berkshire Hathaway profits. Who says?  Then MHI Chairman and 21st Mortgage Corp – a Berkshire brand – Tim Williams did, in a meeting in San Antonio Texas to a few dozen people, with me in the room.

Not all, but many roads that explain MHI’s odd behavior go back to Omaha and Knoxville.  But what seems ever more apparent is that MHI is – as Marty Lavin said – there for the big boys.  By keeping the industry small now, once the big boys consolidated as much as they think they can get away with, watch as they magically take their foot off an invisible brake pedal.  Berkshire’s coffers will open.  A real marketing and educational campaign will suddenly come to life.  Berkshire Hathaway’s “BH Media Group” will likely suddenly start educating the public.

There is no way that Berkshire can logically argue that they are doing their best to grow the industry.  The evidence to the contrary is stark, and growing.

In the Inside MH video above, Dye specifically says that Secretary Carson should enforce enhanced preemption. The award-winning Dye does more, like explain that there are entry level manufactured homes, and residential style manufactured homes. Both types must meet all HUD Code standards, and thus both serve consumers in very necessary and valuable ways. Dye also says that over half his customers previously owned a conventional site-built house, before buying a manufactured home.

President Donald J. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have both said they want to enforce the law. Secretary Carson has said similarly.

But Carson if doesn’t know the law on enhanced preemption exists, how can they enforce it?  I don’t think Brian Montgomery – an establishment guy that MHI touted and was there at HUD previously for years – can make the same claim, but let’s hold that issue for another time.

The beauty of enhanced preemption is that all those local zoning and placement barriers that Secretary Carson has spoken of at times would vaporize if federal enhanced preemption were enforced.

The affordable housing crisis could be largely solved within a decade, perhaps less, largely be free enterprise. HUD’s budget could be cut without harming people, because the need for subsidized housing would shrink naturally.

That might upset for a time the apple carts of thousands of investors in rentals. But it would balance out and could bring ‘the rent is too damn high’ complaints to a halt. Because Secretary Carson is correct, the problem is one of supply and demand.  Insufficient supply is fueling ever higher housing costs. The solution is more supply, which factory-building alone can rapidly meet.

Manufactured housing is valuable to individuals, to investors, and to society. It should be respected and encouraged as Secretary Carson is trying to do.

 

 

But wittingly or not, Dr. Carson has unmasked the most logical explanations for why the industry is underperforming. MHI are not doing their claimed job.  That opens up several legal issues, which is explored in part in the linked report above.

Carson Opportunity Zones and Affordable Housing

Secretary Carson is also the head of the president’s “Opportunity Zones” initiative. A proper implementation of existing laws, noted herein above, combined with the opportunity zones, could fuel a growth of trillions of dollars in GDP, per third-party research.

 

 

That kind of economic growth would raise wages even more than they’ve been doing in the last 2 years.  More home ownership would ease income inequality, which is a hot-button issue.

 

 

Secretary Carson – if he properly and fully implements the law – may hold the keys to a Trump Administration second term, or not.

Finally, he’s made a good start by just striving to educate the public.  But the next step is to enforce the law, and to ask DOJ and others to investigate MHI, the Berkshire brands and others who purportedly have violated several laws in the scheme outlined above.

Unlike UFOs, the truth here isn’t elusive.  The truth is hiding in plain sight. One must peel back years of BS to get to it, but Terry Decio’s and thousands of other industry professionals frustrations are solved by simply telling the truth and enforcing existing laws.

As a multiple year MHI former member, I watched from the inside how smoothly common sense was sidelined in favor of esoteric and ineffective often efforts. This writer was praised for years, until we raised too many questions, like about Pam Danner. It was after that San Antonio meeting, after asking about Pam Danner, and questions like those noted herein, that the powers that be that once praised us, turned on us, and booted me out.  Fine.

After some 7 years of slow progress I saw all I needed to, thank you very much.  We still have sources that tell us much of what is necessary to out what is either incompetence, or a hidden agenda.

Oddly, instead of MHI hiring an outside attorney:

  • to push cities and local jurisdictions to fully implement enhanced preemption,
  • or hire a lobbyist that does nothing more than get FHFA, the GSEs to do the Duty to Serve properly,
  • or have that same lobbyist do nothing more push HUD to enforce “enhanced preemption,”
  • MHI instead hired an attorney to threaten this writer and our publication, apparently unhappy with our fact checks and related – and they specifically mentioned an earlier graphic like the one immediately above, that they complained about our using properly cited under fair use guidelines for media.

We called their outside counsel’s bluff.  It’s just one of several such messages from MHI over the years.  But that’s just one of other such items that MHI has arguably been involved with aimed at a pro-growth trade media.  Where is the logic?  Why not use that money instead for doing the job they claim to do?

Radically Aspirational, Black History, Affordable Housing, Social Justice, and Manufactured Homes

Only those who are willing to struggle against the status quo ever change it.

To be radical, at its core, means to get to the heart of an issue.

 

Aspirational means a hope that is sought, hopefully one worthy of achievement.

Black history month here in the U.S. inexorably leads us to ponder the words, deeds, and examples of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  That black Baptist preacher didn’t use bullets, he used the power of inspirational ideals, organization, and words. It bears mention that King was by all accounts a flawed person, but nevertheless one who helped change this nation for the better. He is a fitting reminder of many principles. One must be willing to overlook certain weaknesses that each of us has, if we are to discover the good that each of us has to offer.

Which brings us to back to radical solutions and first principles.

 

Radix, Justice, and Affordable Manufactured Homes

Google’s dictionary definition of the word Radix includes this: a source or origin of something. “Judaism is the radix of Christianity.”

Merriam-Webster gives these slang means to the word, radical: “…slang: excellent, cool. radical. noun. Definition of radical (Entry 2 of 2) 1a : a root part.”

Radical and Radix are both Latin in origin, and their meaning includes the notion of getting to the root, origin, or the heart of an issue.

In the 7 Habits or Highly Successful People, Dr. Stephen Covey, did something that Dr. King also did. Covey was Mormon, but he like King cited the work of the Catholic thinker, Thomas Aquinas, one of the great minds from the misunderstood Middle Ages.

One must return to first principles if one is to find common ground, and solutions to often vexing problems. Why reinvent the wheel, when the solutions should be obvious?  First principles are excellent, cool and they are practical – they work. Ignore first principles at your own peril. Covey said that one must seek first to understand, then to be understood.

Understanding implies to be under something in order to grasp it more fully. The mechanic under the car understands it better than the person who merely drives it but doesn’t understand the many intricate working parts.  That service writer at a car repair shop is a communicator, a negotiator. But does he understand that car the way the mechanic does? In most cases, no.  But each role is necessary, that is why they both exist.

Social media is popular because we each want to be heard and understood. We don’t want a mere 15 minutes or fame, we want a life that is appreciated.

But all too often posturing messes up clarity of understanding. Is something that a person claims really who they are, or is it a mere costume meant to fool others?

With the above in mind, let’s turn to justice of all kinds, affordable housing, public policy, and manufactured homes.

What’s Wrong? What’s Right?

In an era when tolerance is preached, but not really understood or practiced – save most commonly as a cudgel – one ought to get to the radical heart of each and every issue.

The Green New Deal, for instance, is useful because it boldly states what their own followers claim to believe. Examine that proposal, and you begin to see that socialism and the extremes of the environmental movement are cousins.  Yet conservation – a root meaning of the word, conservative – is good. One should seek to conserve or save the good, and using the principle of wheat and chaff, ignore or toss the rest.

Socialism is sold on the premise of taking from others so that someone else can have. That’s also called a redistribution of wealth. That requires governmental power. So at its core, socialism is a dictatorial system, not a Democratic or a Republican one.  Here we don’t mean those 2 party labels, but the principles that those respective party names are supposed to stand for in the first place.

Carefully examined, socialism can’t work in practice. Nor has it every worked in practice. It is contrary to the human work ethic. If you or I honestly earned X, but someone else can just take part or all of X ‘for free,’ then what protects the incentive for honest work?  My parents, who grew up in the shadow of the Soviet Union, would remind us kids that on Russia’s socialistic collective farms, the small plot of land that the farmers were allowed to keep the produce from was the most productive by far.

Of course, that’s human nature.

 

Justice and The Rule of Law

Law and social media are in a sense both neutral.   But in fact, much of each have been weaponized in recent years.  Law is necessary. Social media, kept as free as possible from manipulation and what amounts to mega-corporate spying, is useful. But once potentially good things are tainted, often only radical solutions are the only solution.

Dr. King did compromise on some items, but he did not begin with compromise. The savvy negotiator at some point asks for all that is still just.  That need not be the initial ask.  The Rev. King pushed for a wide agenda, as well as for maximum justice, in order to get real reform accomplished. He brought many together, but that also meant that divisions occurred too. He was controversial.  King was revered by some, feared and despised by others.  C’est la vie.

At the heart of King’s work was religious and morally founded teachings and beliefs. Dr. Alveda King, his niece, has noted the same, and applies that principle herself in her contemporary work.

Martin Luther King, Jr’s opponents wanted to demonize him and his work. It’s an ancient trick. King’s opponents spied on him. They learned of his human weaknesses. They wanted to turn those weaknesses into the issue, in order to destroy the chance for King to accomplish his end goal.  That goal ML King had was for a more just society.

Dr. ML King didn’t ask for reparations for slavery. King didn’t want socialism. He wanted equality, and for him character counted more than skin color. Rephrased, King wanted biblical principles applied.

Who can better answer that question than God who created all?

My 12 year old son can simply explain why we can know with confidence that a Creator of all exists. Historically, we know that the oldest faith is the Jewish faith, and from that religion sprang others like Christianity or later still, Islam. All three of those faiths claim historical roots to God through Divine revelations made to the person of Abraham.

What does this have to do with housing, justice, or public policy? Ask the founding fathers, and they would tell you, it has everything to do with it, because housing is private property.  For the founders, faith and a just society were inseparable.

The founders weren’t perfect either, but their genius was a clearer sense of history, morality, God and reason.

 

King did not disparage the founders of America. Slavery has sadly long existed for thousands of years, and still does in many parts of the modern world. Slavery today has merely changed its name and forms. King viewed the founders as aspirational, inspirational, and saw that they began a work toward freedom that he and his colleagues wanted to complete.

The battle today isn’t a false choice between capitalism and socialism. Both, properly understood, are problematic. On this Masthead blog – the editorial platform for MHProNews – we believe in free enterprise, because God did so first.

Free enterprise is in a cool sense ‘pure capitalism,’ not tainted crony capitalism, conquest capitalism, vulture capitalism, or monopolistic capitalism. The later – once understood – are to be strongly rejected.

Look again at God’s simple-yet-profound Ten Commandments, because the founders did, and so did Booker T Washington, Abraham Lincoln, or ML King – among millions of others. All good Law should be based upon those ten principles. That’s simple, radical, and it is always what’s right.  No one knows humanity better than our Designer and Creator.  Those 10 exist not as constraints, but as principles of love that bind all together in a just society of peace.

Moses elaborated to an extent in explaining how those Ten Commandments were to be lived out. Centuries later, the Jewish rabbi Jesus took the ten, and simplified them to just two. Love God, love your neighbor.

ML King said love alone conquers hate.

Love is not mere passion or emotion. Love wills the good of the other.  So love embraces pure passion, but true love isn’t about mere self-gratification.  Love doesn’t mean you must like the other.  They are distinctive principles.

There are those in public service and in the mega-corporate world – as opposed to small-to-mid-sized businesses and professionals – that want to impose their will on others. They may not call it slavery, but that is what control is ultimately about.  Those who can’t accept honest dissent and debate are at some subtle level, dictatorial and self-absorbed too.

Good law wills the good of all, not only the good of a select and favored few.

Today, monopolistic forces are at work in business, and in government.  That is routinely true of government at all levels, not only the federal one.  Those who won’t read the New York Times – only because it is the NY Times – are as prone to missing the truth as those who won’t consider what’s on Fox News, just because it is on Fox.

The New York Times carried a thoughtful column that explained how numbers of industries are being monopolized.  That column by David Leonhardt didn’t mention manufactured housing, but monopolization is occurring in manufactured housing too. Arguably the primary one doing so has shrunk the industry, in order to increase his firm’s market share at a discount.

Those who monopolize are power seekers.

It is noteworthy that those monopolists who build their “Moat”  violate the Ten Commandments on several levels, which are not the focus of this column.  Some of those uber-billionaires are happy to promote socialists. Why?  Not because they want to give away their own wealth, because if billionaires wanted to do that, they could do so at any time without government intervention.

Rather, socialist promises of the ‘give away’ of ‘free stuff’ taken by ‘progressive taxation’ or ‘redistribution of wealth’ are mere masks.  They are the ultimate con game.  Just ask the starving and suffering Venezuelans of today. Or the Russian who bought that same lie in the pre-Soviet Union. Ask the Chinese who bought the lies spread by Mao.  Or ask the Cubans who bought the lies of Fidel Castro and his cronies. Or ask the Germans who bought that lie from Adolf Hitler.  Never forget that the fascists of Italy and the Nazis were just different nationalistic brands of socialism. The name Nazi was a contraction – National Socialists.  Note that none of the above were faith-filled people seeking to live out the 10 Commandments, rather, they were power-hungry people.

The loss of private property, a kind of slavery, police states, and death were the results of each of those experiments in socialism and communism. The report linked below from the text/image box that follows demonstrates university level research into those movements. Their wars and murder of their own people make the conflicts over religion seem like a picnic.  Hundreds of millions of souls died at the hands of those who practiced various branches of socialistic thinking.

So, when the uber-rich posture supporting some candidate for president – or any other elected office – that claims to want to implement socialism, don’t buy what they are selling. Every con promises something that someone wants.  Every seduction begins with the promise of pleasure, but that fleeting feeling often quickly yields to pain for the many harmed once seduced.  Socialism is often voted in, but it has also often required armed conflict to have it removed.

In manufactured housing, there are some who are aware of the monopolization of the industry. Some are aware of the harm that moat-building has caused to the proper understanding of manufactured housing, and how it can help solve the affordable housing crisis. But some smaller-to-midsized players are not necessarily fighting the dominate ones who are building their moats.  Why?  There are many reasons.  But one of them can be summed up like this.

They too want to benefit from the work of the moat-builders. The rest are details and commentary.

What all those who get it but have not yet acted fail to consider are painful lessons of history, which Warren Buffett – a self-proclaimed student of history himself – has observed.

In Communist Cuba, Russia, China, or in Nazi Germany, some who stood by or who aided those who sought to take power themselves were later ousted, stripped of their property, and in numerous cases, killed.  Play with fire, and you may get burned.

You don’t have to understand his every tweet or agree with his methods.  But let’s give President Donald J. Trump his due.  He was right in saying that socialism is about power.  Socialism depends on what Hitler and his propaganda minister called the notion of the Big Lie. Repeat a lie often enough, said Hitler, and numbers of people will come to believe it.

The best antidote to a lie is the truth.  That’s why at its core, much of what is vexing America is a struggle between lies often told, or truth that is at times ignored or suppressed, vs. the pure truth of any given subject.

The best argument, it’s been said, against Christianity (or any other religion) are the believers of that faith.  We are all hypocrites to some degree. Dr. King was a womanizer, and his enemies wanted to use that against him. To that point and others – much like you, me, or anyone else – there are times that we fail or are hypocritical.

But the inspiration of God is that eternal call from the fall back up toward redemption.

In affordable housing, public policies have caused or contributed to the problems that exist. Barring people from owning manufactured homes – especially given how proven they are to serve millions well – is just one of many examples of the broader issues that plague our great nation.

Each photo is of a modern manufactured home, which can be 2400 sq ft or more in size, 1 or 2 levels, set over a basement, or can be as modest as 320 sq ft. These homes are all built to federal construction and safety standards that went into effect on June 15, 29176, administered by HUD, and are thus known as “HUD Code Manufactured Homes.”

Yes, America is a great nation, not because it is perfect.  We are not yet under the tyranny of socialism.  Our American ancestors fought to end slavery.  We fought to establish greater civil rights. We fought to end the tyranny of the Nazis, and so much more.

We Americans – a melting pot – arguably ought to fight to end the monopolization of our society by the FAANG brands, or Berkshire Hathaway, and Microsoft. We ought to #DeFaangBM.  We ought to break up the monopolies, as the conservationist president Teddy Roosevelt did.

Because in the end, the moat-building monopolists are the hidden-in-plain-sight drivers of much of the social, economic, and political ills that our times endures.  That’s not to say that others besides the FAANGs or BM shouldn’t be broken up – legally – under antitrust laws.  There are no doubt more that should be considered for a break up under anti-monopoly laws too.

At the root of it all is the problem of sin – a violation of those Ten Commandments.  That’s old fashioned, which is why it should be more trusted.  Everything else will fail, but following those 10 principles as faithfully as one can would lead us to a more just world.

In that more just world, we would not try to stop someone from having an affordable, safe home.

In a just world, we would not stop someone from peacefully practicing their beliefs, or even allowing them to proclaim it in non-violent ways.

There is truth and there are falsehoods.  There is protecting the rights to private property, which was part of our founding, and which Martin Luther King, Jr. wanted for his fellow humans of all colors. There are rights to religious liberty, and all of those goods that the Bill of Rights established under our system of constitutionally limited government.

Protecting individual rights is what is at the heart of the American Way.  Breaking up monopolists has long been a part of our American legal tradition.

That’s the struggle.  Freedom vs slavery.  Justice vs. injustice. Right vs. wrong.  God’s way vs. the way of those who oppose what is Godly. In that context, we support the struggle for manufactured homes, and all other rights that are in keeping with the will of the God who created us.

I asked my 12 year old son, before finishing this article, how can we know that God exists? Many doubt or deny God exists.  He smiled and said, “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” And, “Which came first, the acorn or the oak tree?” Simple.

God created the chicken, who laid eggs, said my son, Tamas (sounds like “tah mash,” Hungarian for Thomas or Tom).  God created the oak tree, which drops its acorns to reproduce.

The American Dream, Arguably Among the Most Profitable, But Least Understood Stories in the USA Today

The American Dream is more than housing that someone owns, but that is a key element to it.  Properly understood, this story could bridge much of the left-right divide. Properly told, and it would likely need to be a series, it could win a Pulitzer or other prize for reporting.

 

Nevertheless, those true tales are not being properly told, why?

A man’s home is his castle,” is a potent maxim whose origin dates back centuries. In 1604, Sir Edward Coke declared that “The house of every one is to him as his castle and fortress, as well for his defence against injury and violence as for his repose,” per Wikiquote.

There are dozens of nations where the rate of homeownership is higher than the United States. That’s a vexing reality. How can it be that when the typical American today is demonstrably richer than the inhabitants of other lands, why are their homeownership rates higher?

Why is the U.S. only #41 on this list?

 

The rate of homeownership has been recovering since the election of President Donald J. Trump. But per Pew Research in 2016 data reported in 2017, some 36.6 percent of our nation were renters. Conventional housing builders can’t keep up with demand. The National Association of Home Builders Chief Economist Lawrence Yun said earlier this year that some 8.3 million housing units are needed, now.  Several gurus among the tech giants have decided that only factory building can close the affordable housing construction gap.

Here in the land where factory-home building was born, or at least popularized, there are known ways that millions of those renters could become homeowners, by opting for factory crafted homes.  Everything else you drive, wear, use to make calls came from a production center. Why is it that our society seems to fear factory built homes?

Millions of our fellow citizens could start building equity, which is the most common form of household wealth.

But millions don’t. Why?

As numerous professionals in our industry have long known, you can own a federally-regulated for safety, durability, and greener-by-design manufactured home for the same or less than rent in most markets. The National Association of Realtors™ (NAR) did serious, third-party research this year, that debunked many of the commonly held fallacies about manufactured homes. That NAR report was only a blip in the news.

Why?

With about half a million homeless in the U.S., perhaps the quickest way to house them affordably would be in the only kind of permanent housing built to a federally preemptive construction standard, known as the HUD Code for manufactured homes. The National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) in their research a few years ago found that manufactured homes – unlike the mobile homes of over 4 decades ago – are as safe as a conventional house, but far less expensive.

The NFPA said that the reports of fire related deaths in manufactured homes in 2007 to 2011 were so low that they surprised them, and thus merited ‘caution.’ But their own research proves that manufactured homes are as safe as conventional housing, and more safe than non-updated mobile homes built decades ago.

Millions who want to retire well don’t think they can do so affordably, but if they understood the reality vs. the 42+ year old misinformation, they might sell their more expensive conventional housing, and turn instead to a manufactured home.

are among those who have praised the manufactured housing option. How is it possible that it is still being called by the inaccurate pejorative, “trailer house?” When no mobile homes have been built in the U.S. for over 42 years, why do media and others often still inaccurately call a “manufactured home,” a “mobile home?”

The last report noted in our bulleted list above – Value Penguin – cites third-party research by a pair of National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) scholars to demonstrate how an additional two trillion dollars a year in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) could be produced annually, simply by making more affordable housing – including manufactured homes – more readily available.

Imagine for a moment that you wanted to break through on the noise about the affordable housing crisis. With such an impressive collective bulleted list – the one above – where would you put that on your website if you were the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI)? Oddly, that list is nowhere one can readily see it, if it is there at all, it’s behind a firewall. Why?

Don’t misunderstand.  MHI has promotional information, but it looks like advertising instead of referencing all of the potent third-party praise cited above. It also includes facts that MHProNews advised MHI months before they made this posted video were inaccurate.  For example, the video understates the GDP contribution of manufactured housing, saying it is about $3 billion a year, when simple math tells us that in 2017 it was more like $6.5 billion that year. Doesn’t misinformation – perhaps geared to support a few favored members – from the largest national association only harm the industry’s credibility?

 

 

What you can find on their website is items like the video above, plus a new video that promotes MHI themselves.  That self-promotion of MHI video proposes an entirely new claimed solution that uses a new style – meaning, untested – home. That ‘new class of homes’ arguably could diminish the acceptance and value of what millions of manufactured homes already achieved and represent. That’s according to a range of industry professionals, that includes MHI members.  So why are they pushing that experiment when MHI-only members that are HUD Code builders have told MHProNews that it makes more sense to build a modular house instead of that ‘new class’ of manufactured home?  That would avoid all sorts of delay, confusion, and risks to the bulk of the manufactured home industry, existing home owners, and consumers alike.

Who’s brainchild was this MHI ‘new class of homes?’  Per a well-placed MHI source, the homes and standards originated from “Kevin Clayton.”

What you won’t see on the MHI website is an explicit statement of how much Berkshire Hathaway owned firms – like Clayton Homes – control that Arlington, VA based trade association.

What you won’t see on the MHI website is how Chairman Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway owned Clayton Homes and some of their lending sister firms are under several federal investigations.  On the boxes that follow, you can click the headline and access that report for more information.

Nor will you see how past MHI Chairman Nathan Smith, who is currently their MHI PAC Chairman, has had several potentially high-profile legal issues quickly swept away. Is it because of Smith’s strong ties to prominent Democrats? Or is it due to Smith’s ties to Clayton and Berkshire’s 21st Mortgage?

When one drills down on the Manufactured Housing Industry’s tragicomic story, one sees how Berkshire entered the field 15 years ago and has purportedly proceeded to monopolize the industry.

Maxine Waters (CA-D), Ranking member, Financial Services Committee. Waters is slated to be the next chair of this powerful House committee.

 

Among those who have pointed their finger with that allegation is Congresswoman Maxine Waters, who will likely chair the powerful House Financial Services Committee. Will Representative Waters (CA-D) and her Democratic colleagues investigate Warren Buffett, the Claytons’, and Berkshire Hathaway lenders – which she said was a near monopoly that has also been charged with racism and predatory behavior?

Buffett has said you don’t get involved in a business that doesn’t make sense. When legendary investors like Warren Buffett and Sam Zell are both in manufactured housing, how could that fail to register with more investors – not to mention – with so many millions of our fellow citizens?

Or is it because Buffett – who’s BH Media Group could arguably single-handedly change the understanding and thus the fortunes of manufactured housing – that in various actions and inactions keeps reality as foggy as possible? Does that fog help him consolidate more of the industry, that makes so much common sense? Plus earns Buffett’s Berkshire billions?

News is a business. Media covers or not what their management and ownership want, and in the way their management or ownership desires.

Poverty is also a huge business. Keeping some poorer than they should be can also be a tool used to generate votes at election time.

Meanwhile, millions are trapped in renting, or are homeless, in the wealthiest nation on the face of God’s earth.

Truth, Trump, Tragedy, Triumph, Affordable Housing, and Manufactured Homes

Let’s stipulate that both President Donald J. Trump and his anti-Trump opponents at times error in various ways. No one is perfect.

 

Let’s note later why the bullets below matters for the cause of the economy, affordable housing in general, and manufactured homes in particular.

But we’ll do this systematically, by first laying out a series of bullets, to set the stage.

There are:

  • Muslims,
  • Jews,
  • Christians,
  • LGBTQs,
  • Blacks,
  • Hispanics,
  • Women,
  • Men,
  • Rich,
  • Poor,
  • Working Class,
  • Media,
  • Other groups and professions,

that appreciate, and respect the 45th President – Donald J. Trump’s – polices and accomplishments. Unlike many politicos, the 45th President of the United States (POTUS) is methodically doing what he said he would do.

Depending on what media sources you read, watch or prefer to listen to, you will either agree or perhaps strongly disagree with those bullets. But those points are nevertheless accurate and demonstrably true. More on that further below.

The president isn’t a choir boy, and never claimed to be. That’s not a defense, it’s a statement of reality. God bless his candor on that point.

Yet this non-choir boy president has tackled vexing domestic and foreign policy issues that faced the U.S. as recently as two years ago, which are already seeing significant improvement.

Jobs in:

  • manufacturing,
  • mining,
  • energy,
  • steel, and more are returning to America.
  • Recall that President Barack H. Obama said many of those are jobs that arenever coming back.” But under 45, they’re coming back.
  • Better trade deals are being struck by 45. Yet former President Obama said better trade deals would require a “magic wand.”
  • As a reminder, Secretary Hillary Clinton would have continued the policies of her predecessor in most cases, she said so.
  • Several of the policies of former Presidents George W. Bush and Obama led to massive deficits that roughly tripled the federal debt in 16 years.
  • So, this is not a simple GOP vs. Democratic policies issue.

Candidate Trump wasn’t the first to tap the agenda he did.  Others like Pat Buchanan, former Senator Rick Santorum, and former Gov. Mike Huckabee had similar planks and policies. But “The Donald” won.

Rephrased, the core beliefs of the Trump coalition were already found among:

  • blue dog Democrats,
  • The Tea Party,
  • Evangelicals,
  • Constitutionalists,
  • Free enterprise proponents, and others.

People ought to be honest enough to give the president the credit he is due.  Love or hate his style, jokes, or tweets, his policies are working.

By contrast, prior to the Trump era, the wealth of the oligarchic class grew rapidly during the prior 3 administrations. Democrat, Republican, it didn’t matter. That’s not a slam on capitalism or the 2 party system. It’s a slam on crony capitalism and a rigged political system.

 

The Problem of Monopoly and Oligopolies

The rigged system” is a common point between Bernie Sanders backers and the followers of Donald J. Trump.

Danny Glover is a fine actor. My citing the quote below, or any other quote from other persons or sources, doesn’t imply I think everything the quote source said or did is perfect. We use a wheat and chaff approach with everyone.

There is a lot of reforming still needed, education is part of what must change in the U.S. The low to poor outcomes, in spite of huge sums spent, prove it.

Threats, Bullying and Intimidation Tactics

Yet, there are rent-a-rioter protesting and/or leading protests.

Who says?

ABC News.

 

CNN.  They call themselves antifascist – or AntiFa. But in fact, they are using violent tactics much like the brownshirts in 1930s Germany.  They take on their opponents “by any means necessary.”  They talk about opposing “white nationalists,” but very few white nationalists ever show up to their own events. So, clearly, AntiFa has a different agenda.

 

 

Note that in the video above, one planner said that they’ve been doing such organizing for years.  It is only more noticeable now. He admits the masks are to make it harder to identify and arrest lawbreakers.

Do we want a society where bullying, violence, and intimidation tactics rules?  “Organized descent,” is what a woman in this video says.  Senator Elizabeth Warren (MA-D) is prominent in this.

 

Odds are good you’ve seen Representative Maxine Waters (CA-D) tell a group to “push back on them” any time you see a Trump administration member in public.  What’s that?  Is that love, that they often claim, or is it hate?

Democrats and the GOP – Republicans – both needed reforms. President Trump is fundamentally changing some parts of Republican politics on issues like the border, trade, and tariffs.

As a political independent, it must be said that President Trump is making the GOP into a pro-worker, pro-business – notably small business – party.  That’s why MHARR praised President Trump. That’s why the NFIB sings his policies praises too.

 

MHI postures being for less regulation, but they have time and again failed the independents of the industry.  Frank Rolfe may have gone silent, but he was right when he said that the problems the industry faces are internal.  Rolfe named MHI as part of the problem.

 

Marty Lavin was a long-time MHI member.  He won one of their highest awards.  He said that they work for the interests of the big boys, not the independents.

It’s sad that so few will speak out publicly, but it is because they are:

  • afraid, as people that work for Clayton and intendents have told us.
  • Still don’t understand, because they can’t get passed a good time(s) they’ve had at an MHI meeting, or with Clayton or 21st, etc. But how many felt that before they were forced out of business by 21st and or Clayton after 2009?
  • If the ‘big boys’ did it to the industry before, can’t they do it again? Did you know some believe that is what MHI/Clayton/21st/VMF have been doing with the GSEs?

There is no lack of evidence to what’s happening to our nation, and to our industry.  MHI has purportedly sold our industry’s independents out many times. We share some MHARR links just to mix it up, but we’ve covered these topics several times.

Job One is to support pro-Trump candidates. They must expand their hold of Congress.  We’ve shown just how that can happen in 2018, in spite of what the pollsters say. Recall, those same pollsters said Trump couldn’t win in 2016.  Vote and get others lined up to do the same.

What some call “RINO” Republicans – more aptly, squishy on the Trump-agenda – politicos like Jeff Flake are stepping down.  Pro-Trump candidates are stepping up in their place.

Who is MHI supporting with their PAC? Flake’s Democratic opponent, and in Indiana, the anti-Trump Joe Donnelly (D).  There are more examples, but let’s just let those two sink in.

Facts are facts.  The Trump track record is very different than some elements of the media portray. POTUS Trump is not a typical Republican from the 10 or 20 years ago.  That’s not saying the GOP was bad then, it is only to say that President Trump has taken elements of Republican thinking, brought in some blue-collar elements from the Democratic thinking, and blended it together.

MHI postures being for everyone, but they have time and again failing independents.  Former MHI chairman, and MHI PAC Chairman Nathan Smith said as much on a video.


The outcome is consolidation. Smith laughs about it, but that’s the game.  The more a few control businesses, including manufactured housing, the worse it is for consumers.

Manufactured housing is poised for historic growth.  But the foot purportedly has been kept on the metaphorical brakes. The time to expose the rigged system, in all its elements is now.  The need to continue to expose it won’t end until the vast majority of Americans realize just how failed and corrupted the system has become.

American workers, American consumers, and independent American businesses first. Its common sense.  There is an opportunity to take the evidence that the Trump Administration is producing and use it to show how it can turn years of tragedy into triumph.

The good results speak for themselves.  More is needed, specifically in our industry, which is why the Omaha, Knoxville, Arlington triangle must be arguably be exposed and broken up.  Antitrust laws could be useful in MHVille and beyond.  The Trump administration has already signaled that antitrust – anti-monopolistic actions – is coming, perhaps soon after the midterms.

So, to obtain their goals, they lie, play act, and deceive others to get what they want. That pattern impacts independent businesses, our industry’s home owners and millions of potential customers.

 

 

Millions of Americans, along with hundreds of millions of others around the world, are star struck.  That has been true for decades. If someone is rich or famous, they are automatically accorded a special status that wealth, influence, and their access can bring.

For several reasons, ‘stars’ of all kinds, including athletes, are held up for others to consider as role models. Such figures are thus often used as tool, a prop, a means of manipulating others.

Let’s consider two examples of thousands of possible examples. During Vietnam, actress Jane Fonda went to North Vietnam to condemn the United States. President Trump had not yet been sworn into office, and famous figures like Madonna had already pledged to speak against him at post-election protests.

 

  • Warren Buffett,
  • Bill Gates,
  • Jeff Bezos,
  • George Soros,
  • Tom Steyer – all of those are billionaires –
  • leaders at giant companies like Apple, Google/YouTube (parent Alphabet), Facebook, or Twitter leaders,
  • athletes like Colin Kaepernick,
  • actors like Jim Carey,

are among those rich and famous who’ve paraded out to cameras and waiting reporters to espouse positions in favor of big government, varied Democratic Party candidates, including many openly espousing socialistic positions.

Why do they do that? And why should MHPros, prefab professionals, or millions of others care?

Simply because these mavens influence the politics that controls the bureaucracies that can limit, influence or destroy your business and/or investments.

Rephrased: you as a business owner, professional, or investor aren’t just trying to sell a product or related services. You also must comply with the rules, or the rules can be used against you.

Those who ignore politics do so at their own professional risk.  All of those rich and famous figures above are deeply engaged in politics.  MHPros like Democratic supporter Nathan Smith of SSK Communities, and former Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) Chairman, are deeply engaged in politics. Today – September 17, 2018 – is Constitution Day

Among the things that often left-leaning academics or others like those noted above in positions of influence, money and power do is demean and besmirch the U.S. Constitution and our nation’s founding fathers.

What utter hypocrisy. The U.S. Constitution is what defends their freedom of speech to decry what gives you, me, and some 325 million others in the U.S. the ability to make more of our lives that what our parents attained.

Intellectual curiosity alone is reason enough to challenge commonly promoted assumptions.

But when people seek to exert a serious degree of control over your life, you, I, and those we love should care enough:

  • to learn,
  • ponder,
  • and act accordingly

in order to better and more properly shape the world of tomorrow.

 

In the Minority

On a personal note, I’m one of those in a minority of Americans who married a woman from the Middle East who was born a Muslim. Her extended family are Muslims. Soheyla is no ordinary woman, as hundreds of professionals in our industry have learned first-hand, and thousands more have learned by reading.

Soheyla speaks 3 languages, and she has studied two others. She’s highly educated, motivated, and quite passionate about many issues. By the way, for those that know Soheyla, her circle of friends and colleagues includes Jews and numerous Christians. She’s demonstrably inclusive, and broad minded.

All of that is background to say the following. Given her background, she supported then-candidate Donald J. Trump, after he promoted during the GOP primaries the “strict vetting” of Muslims, along with strong immigration reform. Soheyla knows what Muslim radicals are capable of doing. She wants no such thing for America, or for the future of our son and your children.

The Wealthy Can Literally Buy 0r Manipulate News, That’s Used to Influence Others

We’ve said for years, we are all for honestly earned wealth. That said, many in positions of wealth, influence or power – wittingly or not – divide and segment Americans into groups that are then pitted against each other.

Why?

 

  • Why are blacks, Hispanics or other minority groups artificially pitted against whites?
  • Why are women in the news or in story lines often pitted against men?
  • Why are everyday Democratic or socialist supporters set against everyday conservatives, Libertarians, or Republicans?

Actively retired Rev. Donald Tye Jr., a manufactured home advocate who owns an updated pre-HUD Code factory-built home said why. “Divide and Rule.” Tye is an independent today, buy was active in GOP politics for years.

Tye is also a big believer in the U.S. Constitution. So are we, along with millions of other Americans.

There’s a strong narrative that’s being pushed by many in media, among the rich and by people in positions of power that are promoting socialist, big government, or leftist ideals. Then why are they Democrats or socialists, but still keep their money and power?

Propaganda and manipulation are alive and well in America today. Not all news is tainted. But some is. That said, I’ve seen first hand – going back over twenty years in media stories I happened to be involved in – how a narrative is spun by a reporter, producer or editor that was different than reality. There is real news, and there is faked news. That’s not new, it goes back hundreds or years.

We, the People” must therefor learn to discern right from wrong. I’m not sure how that can be done other than by applying Godly moral, reason-based, evidenced supported, and ethical principles.

Socialism has a history of taking from one group what they earned, and by force or coercion, giving it to another. Before Karl Marx and the first socialists, big governments throughout history have done similarly. Marxists just dressed up legalized theft in different clothing.

As soon as someone is pitching a socialist solution, you can reject it as immoral and contrary to the interests of society. “Thou shall not steal” is believed by Christians, Jews and other religious groups too.

 

Theft by Government is Still Theft

The Democratic leaders of today are not the Democrats of the President Jack Kennedy era.

President Kennedy (D) rolled back taxes, as did President Ronald Reagan (R), and now former Democrat turned Republican, President Donald J. Trump.

My friends and colleagues include sincere Democrats. We’ve had clients who support Democrats. I’m not trying to insult anyone or hurt someone’s feelings. My younger brother Tom is a Democratic supporter, has won city elections, and has said publicly said to me, “I disagree with your politics, but not your ethics.”  Tom’s tested IQ is 156, way over the genius level.

Tom and I agree to disagree without malice, but have robustly debated numerous issues. We listen to each other, so we can understand each other’s perspectives. It’s what our genius father and gifted mother taught all of us siblings.  Our parents were Kennedy Democrats, who became Reagan Republicans.

Facts are facts. Facts must be distinct from opinions. The quote below is by a famous Democrat, who likely wouldn’t recognize the party he was a member of today.

I’m still a political independent, but I’m far more likely to vote for a President Trump backing Republican, for reasons similar to what Jon Voight and Peter Thiel outlined.

President Lyndon Banes Johnson (LBJ) pulled a clever pivot in the aftermath of the Kennedy assassination. It was mostly Republicans who supported the Civil Rights Act. LBJ got enough of his racist Democratic buddies in Congress to vote for the Civil Rights Act that they earned the trust of the very minority group they hated, blacks. LBJ’s Great Society programs were arguably another clever way to hook people in government programs and government jobs.

Consider the evidence.

Quora and HuffPo both are among those that cite the following about the crafty Democratic bigot, LBJ.  LBJ, speaking to some of his racist Democratic buddies, he said: “These Negroes, they’re getting pretty uppity these days.” He said something had t be done, because they were gaining political power. So he crafted pivots and programs – and got his buddies to buy in with the following promise, “I’ll have those n*ggers voting Democrat for two-hundred years.” Ouch, tragic, but per several sources, apparently true.

LBJ already achieved 50 of those two hundred years. Part of their game is to call their opponents racists, when they are the ones using “plantation politics.” Democratic policies are what has run devastated Detroit. Democrats ran Puerto Rico, so that when Hurricanes Irma and Maria hit last year, their infrastructure was already a mess, before the storm, and they were near bankruptcy economically. Chicago is a Democratic town, and in some ways, has parts of that great city as more deadly for Americans than Afghanistan is for our military.

The list could go on and on.  But a growing number of high profile blacks are rejecting plantation politics.

As an independent, but also as a pro-business, pro-free enterprise history buff, if I knew nothing about a GOP or Democratic candidate – other than their party label – I’d tend toward a modern GOP candidate.  That would be especially so if the GOP candidate was pro-President Trump.

So why do Warren Buffett, and so many rich and famous want Democrats in power? Why do they want socialistic policies?  Simple. Because big government they can control would give them more power.

Venezuelans voted in socialism, and millions today regret the lies they were sold.

It is critical for every American to learn basic history and the U.S. Constitution. Our form of government was developed by men who risked all to be free of English tyranny. It has been twisted over the years, and it won’t be fixed overnight.  POTUS Trump and those in Congress who support him are improving the economic conditions of blacks, Hispanics, businesses and others.

So, if you want to be free of tyranny in our age, don’t vote for a socialist or most Democrats.  Take the time to share the information that might keep a colleague, worker, friend or family from voting for a Democratic or socialist candidate.

When in the course of human events...”

 

Day by day, people make life-changing decisions. Those choices can be for good or ill.

A fact without context may have little discernible meaning. To properly understand the present, or any moment in time, one must understand what occurred previously. 

In the famous George Orwell’s dark novel, 1984, control of information – including historical – was part of how “Big Brother” could pivot his alliances between otherwise ‘competing’ factions.

Orwell used fiction to brilliantly shed light on the human condition. 

 

Profitable History 

History could be profitably oversimplified to the following notion.  

History is a series of events describing how this or that ambitious person or group tries to dominate, manipulate or oppress others. That domination in turn creates a desire for freedom among those being manipulated, disadvantaged or controlled. 

When in the course of human events…” are the first words in the Declaration of Independence. The founders were educated men who knew history, business, philosophy, science, and religion. 

America’s founding founders were the opposite of socialists.  They were fighting against economic, political, and legal oppression. They did so for moral, and religious reasons.

Not What It Seems

Because of competing interests, stories – narratives – are told that spin, twist or outright lie about some fact, person, history, or group.  

The brilliant G.K. Chesterton was spot on in saying, “What is wrong is that we don’t ask what is right.”

It was sheer genius when the venerable Fulton Sheen – with his keen insights into human nature – caused him to observe that people can be tempted to do what is right, just as we can be tempted into doing what’s wrong. 

It’s a stretch to say that a brighter future for America depends upon a wider acceptance of manufactured homes. But a broader understanding and embracing of manufactured homes would demonstrably yield more wealth for people of modest means, and all others too.  Is there evidence or proof for that claim?

Yes, and it’s been produced over the years by educated, third-party researchers. 

Greater personal net worth for the working and middle class would in turn make America as a whole a more prosperous, and freer people.  Wealth in all of its forms – properly understood – breeds more wealth.  Wealth isn’t a zero sum game, as some have been mislead into believing. 

We must not forget that manufactured homes – along with the mobile homes that were built before the federal manufactured housing standards began on June 15, 1976 – were a working-class option praised by American presidents. The subsidized housing system of the last 50 years is a demonstrable failure. It can never keep up with the demands, and never has. 

In contrast to subsidized housing, manufactured homes are uniquely positioned today to serve the needs of people on virtually all rungs of the economic ladder. 

But we must also embrace the reality that millionaires, the famous, and even some billionaires have owned a manufactured home they called their own home.  That fact often opens minds, and thus boosts manufactured housing’s acceptance, and appeal. 

Opening minds is at the heart of what must happen in America.  Opening minds must occur on every level of society, including that of the good news, which   includes how manufactured homes have and can support the American Dream.

The American Dream was never about mere shelter, or “housing.”  

Rentals or subsidized housing wasn’t what the rebels of 1776 fought, bled, and died for during their era.  The very notion would have been widely rejected then, and rightly so.

Today, we should in stages remove subsidized housing from the government’s practices and then, it’s lexicon of failed socialized efforts. 

Private ownership of housing is to be preferred as a public policy.  Who says? Harvard, and several other third-party researchers.  

So, the American rebels wanted to be secure in their persons, properties, papers, and possessions.  They wanted no taxation or regulation without just representation.  They wanted a republic, not a democracy, dictatorship or monarchy.  

When one reads the Declaration of Independence in the context of history, it’s a brilliant document. Ditto the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

 

Compromise…

The founders of the U.S. made complex compromises. A black or Native American might understandably feel a level of pain over some concepts in those documents. But we must be mindful, as dark-skinned immigrant Dinesh D’Souza reminds us, that whites were indentured servants too. Servitude isn’t only a racial issue. Oppression in all of its forms plays a sad part in all of human history.   

The quest for freedom is part of that puzzling mosaic of history, which is best understood as the struggle of some seeking domination over others. That domination takes many forms.  That thirst for domination in turn sparks the desire for freedom.  Often, as we all know from experience, we don’t realize some good thing that what we have, until we’re losing or have lost it. 

So it’s a poisonous fallacy to say that the U.S. Constitution was purely racist. Because blacks owned other blacks – sad, but true – and white’s made chattel of other whites for long periods of time. Conquest is color blind, and so is the thirst for freedom. Freedom is won or lost in degrees, and over time. 

Race hustlers should be denounced as manipulative, just as certain billionaires seek to rig the system for their own benefit and enrichment today. Socialists may be sincere, but they are misguided.  The socialist system is failing before our eyes in Venezuela, in just a decade. It failed in Cuba. The Chinese Communists, and the Soviet Russians abandoned socialism too. 

Why should Americans buy into propaganda that’s so blatantly false? 

Then why are some billionaires peddling dressed up variations of socialism to Americans today? 

Because socialism requires big government.  Big government means power over people.  That kind of power is a path to taking the wealth of others, by misusing government.  Government is a devious way to obtaining money that ought to be sought by honest work. Here’s another historic tip. The Nazi’s weren’t right wingers.  They were “National Socialists” = Nazi. There are so many lies and half-truths being spun today by the manipulators that it’s disgraceful. That’s why ignorance of history, economics, morality, or politics is dangerous.

Celebrating Success

We celebrate honest success here, and are for the rights “endowed by our Creator” enshrined in the principles of Life, Liberty, and that Pursuit of Happiness;” which in the earlier draft of the Declaration read “Life, Liberty, and Property.”

Those who peddle:

  • Socialism,
  • Racial hatred of any kind,
  • Universal Basic Income,
  • Sexual divisions,
  • “Free” college,
  • “Free” health care,
  • Subsidized housing,
  • Higher taxes,
  • More regulations,

are arguably either ignorant, misguided, manipulative or some combination of those three.

People are never free who are entirely dependent upon others.  

The revolution of 1776 was controversial even in the 13 colonies.  Those colonies declared themselves to be a confederation of independent states. George Washington and the others had a price on their heads, and a bulls eye too.  Benedict Arnold wasn’t alone. America was divided, then and now.  Some fought for the British crown, just as some fight today for the monopolistic and socialistic. The reasons then and now are similar. Greed. Lust for power. The desire to control the lives of others.

Understanding the principles of human nature, and the principles of history are necessary for Americans to reclaim our national vision.  Affordable home ownership is part of that American Dream.

 

Homeownership  

A man’s home is his castle,” wasn’t mere sentimentality. The right to own property – including one’s home – and to be secure in one’s person, property (think home), papers, possessions, and beliefs were at the core of the 1776 revolt. Note that the 10 Commandments protected private property, and the truth. 

The American revolution was also about no taxation or regulation without just representation. It was about establishing laws that protected rights, even the rights of minorities against the potential of mob rule from manipulated majorities.

We’ve got a Republic, at least on paper, not a democracy.  

But a new revolt, which could be peaceful, is arguably needed today. That revolution – and a counter-revolution – are already underway.

That revolution of the American Dream begins with understanding realities vs. popularized fictions, lies or half-truths.  

Zoning” and other forms of land-use control are among those structures that are potentially as oppressive as what the founders rebelled against in 1776.  Note that 200 year span between the revolution, and the dawn of the manufactured housing era?

Manipulations of the American system in turn caused affordable housing shortages in places throughout the nation. Who says? A growing body of researchers, that have been cited for years here on MHProNews, or on MHLivingNews. Why don’t those folks in Arlington, VA routinely cite those same third-party sources?  Why do they turn instead to their own, weaponized data and claims?

 

$2 Trillion Annually

Problematic zoning and land use, say university-level researchers, costs America an estimated $2 trillion dollars a year in lost GDP.

$2 trillion dollars a year is roughly equal to $6,000 per every many woman and child. 

Rephrased, for a household of 4 people, it would be like adding some $24,000 per year in earnings.

That’s life changing for tens of millions, and would be far more effective than the phony higher minimum wage, public assistance programs, or other enslaving handouts that some socialistic-minded wags advocate.  Those truly need have always been cared for in America. We didn’t need big brother government to care for people in need.

When Americans are kept from understanding and embracing manufactured homes – per the logic and reasoning that flows from third-party researchers from places like Harvard – it’s costly to all Americans.

But ignorance and rejection of the truth about manufactured housing is especially costly to those whose only home ownership chance may be a manufactured home.

Wheat and Chaff 

There’s an absolute necessity to seek the truth, regardless of its source. That in turn requires a “wheat and chaff” approach that discerns what is real – from what is problematic. Often, common thoughts are nevertheless untrue. A great example is a manufactured home, which many misunderstand, because they believe the common prejudice, vs. the honest, demonstrable reality.  

We may disagree with this or that political party or organization on a range of issues.  But a group or person may still hold a position which is demonstrably wise, good, and true. Prosperity Now (formerly CFED) has done some fine research, but also hold some problematic socialist-tainted views. They are keenly involved in MHVille, and are an example of the need for a wheat and chaff approach. They are also an example of why engagement is a wise course of action. Critiques properly understood aren’t an attack.  Critiques are a call for intelligent debate, discussion, and mutual learning.

Former Clinton adviser and Democratic strategist Doug Schoen has said that the Democratic Party can’t be a party of redistribution of wealth. Smart.  

Schoen sees the hard left push in his party as embracing socialism, and he rejects it. Democrat Alan Dershowitz sees the harm being caused by weaponizing parts of the government in an attempt to illegitimately unseat a duly elected president.  

You or I may not trust the political, religious or economic perspective of some group or person.  But that doesn’t keep us from considering a specific truth that another may offer.  

So, for example. Much of what Democrats as a party are embracing today in the way of socialism and supposedly “free stuff” – which obviously someone must pay for – are demonstrably nonsense. They are false promises, designed to manipulatively attract, and trap millions of minds. 

But the Democrats were arguably smart to put up a policy position that calls for stronger controls over monopolistic forces in America. On that point, this Masthead writer agrees with them. That’s another example of separating the wheat from the chaff.

Candidates Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump agreed on this. The “System is Rigged.” That much is true. 

And that rigged system is keeping millions from being more free by having their right to choose a manufactured home limited or removed.

Yet, that right to choose a manufactured home is essentially codified in federal law, in the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000, found in the enhanced preemption clause. That’s how zoning and other land-use regulations, which are strangling opportunities for millions to own a manufactured home, can be defeated, just by applying existing federal law.

The reward for doing so is a society that researchers say would produce $2 trillion dollars more a year in GDP. That in turn would in time end the need for subsidized housing, and other well-indented – but nevertheless misguided – ‘entitlement programs.’ 

We editorially oppose socialists and monopolistic manipulators.  It is interesting to note that those billionaires often publicly claim to support leftist candidates. We oppose them, whether their headquarters are in Omaha or Silicon Valley, etc.

There are some billionaires who are no doubt just fine, so its not the rich that are being blindly opposed.  But rather, it’s those who have rigged the system against the rights of “We, the People.” It’s a matter of principle, based upon an understanding of economic, legal, political, and historical forces.

There are more than one strategic moats which threaten our Republic from within.  That’s why the fictional movie Network was as brilliant a look at reality as was George Orwell’s 1984.

Manufactured Home “Choice”

Manufactured Home Choice” or the “Manufactured Home Option” must become a factually accurate, evidenced based battle cry that third-party researchers logic says could create trillions in more wealth and GDP productivity for the USA.  

That would yield thousands of new millionaires, and some new billionaires. They should embrace the long-term vision to make that manufactured home option part of the reality of the “American Dream. 

That’s the Profitable Manufactured Housing Revolution.

That can be done without creating a monopoly.

Why?

If this was a place online for the angry or mad, it would soon be devoid of readers.

But instead, third-party reports reveal a growing audience, which includes:

  • advocates,
  • media,
  • researchers,
  • educated people across the left-right divide,

along with thousands of manufactured and factory-built home industry professionals.  

They come each day by the thousands to the Daily Business News and/or to other parts of MHProNews. 

Some who initially misunderstood – or even strongly opposed – our exposés like Smoking Gun 3 and other reports have-or-are becoming convinced by the evidence presented.

Facts in context matter. 

Some monopolistic minds sought to marginalize or kill-off, we’re told, this pro-industry, pro-growth Trade Media platform – along with our sister-site, MHLivingNews.com – which also begs the question, “Why?” 

George Orwell, the founders, or other freedom-loving thinkers and doers throughout history hold the answer. 

Ignorance is Strength,” was a slogan “Big Brother” used in Orwell’s 1984. If someone can keep you ignorant of your rights or opportunities – in the problematic world-view of monopolistic or socialistic dominators – that allows them to profit or benefit.

The tragic irony is this.

There is arguably more profit without the monopolistic strategic Moat than with it. Is there evidence for that claim?

Sure.  Just look at MHVille when there were more independent producers, vs. the scarcity of independents today for proof.

There’s more wealth to be earned by making America and Manufactured Housing Greater than ever, than there is by robbing people of opportunities though pressures, ignorance, rigged systems or false promises. 

We have always celebrated honest success on MHProNews. 

We oppose on principle monopolistic or any other form of economic, moral, and political oppression as Un-American. 

At the end of the day, it’s the truth that sets people free. Who says?  How about a wise Jewish rebel who preached a gospel that even centuries later motivated the 1776 founders who put their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor on the line, when they began with those timeless words…
