Principles, Cheers and Jeers June 2017

The Manufactured Home Industry could be enjoying its best times ever.  That’s what the facts tell us. While our industry is experiencing growth, it’s only a fraction of what is possible.

NAHB, NAR, Zillow, Case-Shiller and a host of reports from inside and outside of quality, affordable factory-crafted homebuilding all point to the needs and opportunities.

The U.S requires several million new housing units in the next few years.

Site builders are near maxed out. Nor can they hit the lower price points without taxpayer subsides.

So only factory homebuilding can meet the escalating needs, here and abroad.

Other nations see it too.  A number of American media are beginning to as well, as we’ve reported and encouraged.

We report, provide insights, and commentary on all that and more to you; the ups and downs, story by story, day by day.

The Tornado Report, Updated

One of the sources of misinformation that harms our industry is the claim that ‘mobile homes’ are more vulnerable to tornadoes and windstorms than conventional housing. In a narrow sense, that’s true – about mobile homes!  But the researchers fail to make the distinction between HUD Code manufactured homes and mobile homes.  Learn more, share the powerful truths, linked in a special Industry in Focus Report, linked here.

Share the Facts, Candidly and Accurately

When Tim Williams told us that MHI had sent Rick Robinson to testify before a Ohio committee, we reported that fact. That’s what happened, that’s what should be said.

But when MHI thumped their own chest (yet again) in their emailed messages to their readers, as if the heavens were moved by them, and acting as if they and Ohio alone were doing the lifting, RC Williams rightly called them out (see that, linked below).

PrinciplesCheersJeersJune2017FeaturesReportsMastheadManufacutredHousingIndustryCommentaryMHProNews

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.” – Arthur Schopenhauer.

Ironically, MHI called out Gov, Kasich in their emailed message, for his alleged lies, distortions, and half-truths. RC Williams – an African American – said that was MHI hypocritically calling the kettle black. They failed to mention that MHARR, MHLivingNews, MHProNews and others had done the same thing, in some cases – sooner than they had acted. Hypocrisy, right?

From our vantagepoint, that’s but one of many examples of principled, reality-based industry coverage. Truth, facts, and principles matter, to us and thousands of others in MHVille.

Getting to 500,000 Plus

When the industry ought to be doing 500,000 or more units a year, and MHI has one or two full time communications people drawing big salaries, what exactly are MHI’s people doing to advance the image and cause of manufactured homes in the U.S.?

We can lay out the case again, but you can find the good, bad and ugly allegations and concerns in a 400-word executive summary about MHI linked here. Do they want to try to undermine the proven, years of pro-industry work MHLivingNews and MHProNews have done with and for the public and professionals?

If so, let them go for it. We’re ready. But also let’s note, that the industry is watching.

ThousandsOfIndustryProsWatchingMastheadBlogcommentaryMHPRoNews

Our thousands of professional readers – mostly from within, but also outside of manufactured housing – are watching it all unfold too.

We asked MHI recently why they didn’t cite their sources in a press release they did last year? One that seemed to claim facts we’ve published – and that we cited our sources and experts and –  but they have not opted to reply or correct the matter. Too bad.

FrankRolfeMHIHypocrisyQuote-MHProNews

It is Frank Rolfe, not just those at MHProNews, that called them out for hypocrisy. It is MHI member Rolfe who said that the biggest obstacles to industry growth lie within the industry itself.  Can you do the math?

  • Rolfe is far from alone, as we’ve reported;
  • Doug Gorman (MHI award winner),
  • Marty Lavin (MHI award winner),
  • Titus Dare,
  • Bob Crawford (historic, award winning Dick Moore Housing),

…and so many others who have called out MHI by name or inference.

So it’s isn’t just MHARR – or your MHProNews sources – making allegations like those on this page and others.

Many in MHVille have noted MHI failures and weaponized news.” A growing number of their supporters may be silent, due to their own political positions, but they quietly know the score. What had MHI accomplished in 5 years with $15 plus million plus PAC money?

WeaponizedFakeNewsHarmsManufacturedHousingHomeownersProfessionalsMastheadIndustryCommentaryMHProNews

While they have their supporters, the two most common words we read and hear about our coverage are “thank you.

For those who think MHI can bully, threaten, undermine or whatever us — hey, it’s America. Let’s see what happens, as we strive to help inform and inspire the industry and others to embrace — not the failed self-serving crony capitalists — but the honest, hard working men and women who believe that manufactured homes and communities ought to be the mainstream for millions of Americans futures.

We thank those sponsors who have principles, and a backbone. We understand those that have told us they’ve benefited, but due to politics or pressure, will bail on us.

Thousands are watching.

Please take 10 and comment on the HUD regulatory issue.

Warren Buffett and other Manufactured Housing Industry Voices – Post-Election on Trump Victory

The promise of a smooth transition is up to the good will and actions of all involved. President Obama on the right, President Elect Donald Trump, on the left, no political puns are intended.

It’s the dawning of a new day. After the shock and elation or disappointment wash over us, and we all have taken a collective deep breath, we can begin looking to the future. And in that future I think it is safe to say that changes, well, they are a come’in…

For any who might not yet be aware, in addition to President-Elect Trump heading to the White House, both the House and Senate will now be controlled by a Republican majority. All three branches of government are in Republican control. What will this mean? It simply means that there is little in the way of the Republican policy agenda.”

Warren Buffett – on Trump’s victory and impact on the markets

The Masthead  noted some months ago that Mr. Buffett said similarly, meaning, that he felt the nation would do well under a Trump presidency as well as under the Democratic nominee.

From Donald J. Trump to the Manufactured Housing Industry…

As part of an extended pre-election message sent to MHProNews by now-President Elect, Donald J. Trump, the candidate said the following:

Every day I wake up determined to deliver a better life for the people all across this nation that have been ignored, neglected and abandoned.

I have visited the laid-off factory workers, and the communities crushed by our horrible and unfair trade deals. These are the forgotten men and women of our country. People who work hard but no longer have a voice.

Will President-Elect Trump do What He Promised?

President Elect Trump’s transition team is led by former Cincinnati Mayor Kenneth Blackwell. Here is what Blackwell had to say about the Trump campaign’s plan for the first 100 days of the Trump Administration.

If they were being done based upon popular vote, the strategies, campaigns and vote counts would naturally be different.

To say that this was a contentious election is to understate the realities that we all witnessed in the last 16 months.

Recall that just 2 days before the election, at this link here which cited that in an unscientific poll of manufactured housing industry pros, that broad ‘under the radar’ support for Donald Trump, and opposed to Hillary Clinton, was noted.

We have consistently stated that our views do not necessarily represent the views of our sponsors, and have been clear that our support is based upon stated policies and principles. More on that later.

Your Masthead scribe has taken some push-back from certain people during this past year on a variety of fronts, the election being one of them.

joemanchin-d-wv-postedmanufacturedhousingindustrycommentarymastheadblogmhpronews

Senator Joe Manchin’s comments are proof that there are fair minded people in all political parties, some of whom are willing to call-out those who cross a line. It should be noted that Manchin is rumored to be considering becoming a Republican.

That noted:

  • We at MHProNews have and continue to get a steady stream of input from industry professionals across the spectrum, many of whom are not able to speak on-the-record due to their organization’s rules or posture.
  • That input comes from our clients and sponsors (in operations small-to-large), from readers and ‘insiders,’ so it is ‘connected’ to what the grass-roots realities of our industry are, not just some whim, wish or some party’s agenda,
  • We routinely use a principled approach, that has and will continue over time to serve the manufactured housing industry’s interests well.
  • The factory-built home industry needs a ‘fearless’ voice that will call it as we see it, no matter which way some think that the industry’s or the nation’s political winds are blowing.

joemanchin-d-wv-postedmanufacturedhousingindustrycommentarymastheadblogmhpronews-2

America and manufactured housing have suffered under an over-regulated, over taxed economy. Democratic President John F. Kennedy and Republican President Ronald Reagan both worked to lower taxes and the regulatory burden, and saw a surge in revenue, better jobs and economic growth as a result.

While respecting the rights of one and all to take whatever political or policy view they wish, we have and will continue to advocate for what we believe has historically been proven to work.

joemanchin-d-wv-postedmanufacturedhousingindustrycommentarymastheadblogmhpronews-3

Bets for the Future?

If:

  • Democrats do what President Obama and Secretary Clinton promised, to support President Trump and work for his success, and
  • If Donald J. Trump gets the same 2 years of doing what he has proposed legislatively that Barack H. Obama was given by his party, then
  • let’s watch and see how well the nation is doing when the 2018 mid-terms come up.

If Alan Amy is right, and Dodd-Frank is repealed,
watch for a boom in 2017 and beyond in MH.

My bet? Barring some unforeseen sneak attack by an enemy, or similar upheaval or disaster, look for:

  • the economy will be moving ahead far better,
  • millions of Americans will see their circumstances improving economically and
  • a range of issues that the president-elect has promised to address will be advanced in ways that will insure a Republican victory in 2018.

And manufactured housing industry professionals, investors and business owners will be doing far better than any time since the 2008 collapse.

As a closing note, one we’ve shared before, that 2008 collapse was started by Clinton Administration policies that were supported by Democrats and some Republicans, but that other Republicans warned were going to upset the financial system.

Democrats fought against the reforms sought that are noted in the video above, changes that might have averted the economic collapse.  It is revisionist history and political spin to say anything different.

Lower taxes, less and smarter regulations are pro-growth, and historically will work to grow the economy for the benefit of millions.

What national and state associations have been fighting to change for many years now, may get advanced in rapid order in 2017, thanks to President-Elect Trump and a Republican majority, so long as they all keep their promises and Democrats support their efforts where they can.

Happy Veterans Day, and a salute to them all our those in law enforcement who protect our nation and streets.

Let’s catch up mid-week, and please stay tuned to the red-hot Daily Business News.  As an FYI, our readership is soaring in the last two months, many thanks to our team, writers, sponsors, readers and all for making that happen. ##

Superior September 2016, How Manufactured Housing Can Do It Better

September 6th, 2016 No comments

We as an industry have the superior solution, and while we’re collectively growing nicely, manufactured housing is still just a fraction of its former production levels.

manufactured-housing-mobile-home-shipments-graph-chart-calculatedrisk-posted-masthead-blog-mhpronews-com-1-575x349

Manufactured housing peaked in 1998, and has been on a mostly sustained slide since. The rise since 2009’s low point has been good, but we are still just a shadow of our former glory. Image credit, Calculated Risk.

ICYMI (in case you missed it), that relatively low level of production is both a threat and an opportunity in disguise.

Reality Checks

Divisions have always been a part of America. From the days of the colonists – or even before them when the native tribes who traveled the great mountains, rivers and plains of Asia, crossed  the straights from what today is Russia into Alaska, and then fanned out across what would become America – divisions have existed.

native_american_tribesmap-credit-emersonkent-postedDailyBusinessNews-MHProNews-

Divisions have been a part of our heritage. Native American tribes were often rivals. The colonists were not all for the Revolution against England. Is it any wonder there are divisions today too? Note the tribal map is superimposed upon our modern states, which did not exist when they first roamed this vast land. Image credit – Emerson Kent.

Manufactured housing, modular and prefab systems-building is no different. Divisions exist.  It’s part of being human, we lack perfection, we find ourselves at odds with others; by choice, accident or coincidence.

MHI-MHARR-MHEC-DC-MHProNews-collage-copyright2016WeProvideYouDecide

We’ve reviewed before that it is when the national associations are working together in concert with state and community associations that the most progress has been made. UImage credit – collage of Industry Association logos by MHProNews, each logo is the property of their respective

How do we make what divides us into something that nurtures and becomes our strength?

Insanity

Blind eyes won’t do it. What won’t fix divisions or help those fissures to strengthen us is to practice denial or insanity.

We’ve all heard or said that the popular definition of insanity is to keep doing the same things in the same ways, and yet expect a different result.

Let’s be honest. Yet at various times, haven’t MH Pros done just that…right?  We have all traveled that rut time and again, on issue after issue.

dont-let-rut-become-grave-poster-zig-ziglar-posted-manufactured-home-professionals-news-mhpronews-com-

Habits, processes and systems are necessary to acheive success. At the same time, a habit can also become a rut, a trap. We must routinely challenge ourselves – and each other – by asking, is this the best that we can do on issue X today? Photo credit, WikiCommons. Poster by MHProNews.

Be it your face or mine in the mirror, we ought to admit that what was once a grove has at times lead to bring stuck in a rut.  That rut has become a trap which slows our progress, or keeps us from going higher and faster. That rut may even mimic an open ended grave.

Illusions…

MontgomeryWardsKodakVintage1947eBay-postedMastheadBlogMHProNews

As Commodore’s Bob Bender, a former Kodak executive noted in our interview with him, there are times when channels become ruts that can trap a person, firm or an industry. Montgomery Wards was once a great retailer, now they are in the dust bin of history. Ditto Eastman Kodak. Photo credit, eBay.

Being years into our industry’s recovery from the bottom of 2009 is good, but it also has its threats. For those of us who survived or now seemingly thrive in America 2016, that self-congratulatory pat on the back for surviving should not lead us to a false sense of success.

We can and must do better. There are too many threats that could still limit or even crush manufactured housing.  Don’t believe it? Just ask a coal miner, or someone who once worked for a giant operation like Kodak or Montgomery Wards.

Bad Media? Good Reporting?

There are often more than two sides to a story, so that thin edge of the coin can become an important insight.

When one fails to properly share each side of a tale, that story is lacking.  When the realities are twisted, that report then morphs into a kind of ghost story or fairy tale.

What is “Good Media?”

MarlaCarterABC13NewsStill2-posted-DailyBusinessNews-MHProNews-470x338

In this new issue, we showcase examples of manufactured housing pros who spoke out on the record against biased or incomplete media reports. When the industry makes responding to such attacks routine and effective, we’ll see manufactured housing acceptance, respect grow and sales soar. Hundreds of mainstream media sites picked up our media release on media bias against MH. See article linked below for this topic and others like it.

Good media does more than the basics of – who, what, when, where and why – of Journalism.

Good media reveals the tensions!  Good media reflects what is real, and may hint at or spell out the possible resolutions!

Tensions. Accountability. Reality checks. Good story telling. Resolutions. Each and all are needed to advance.

Skills, insights and resources like yours and your operation are needed to complete a picture.

NRDC-ACEEE-DOE-ManufacturedHome-MHHousing-EnergyControversy-DailyBusinessNews-MHProNews-

Better late to the dance than to not come at all. Some in MH questioned and resisted early and often what others more recently have realized could harm our industry. What ought to be a positive for MH, has been shown by third parties as negatives about manufactured housing. The engagement of professionals with good trade media and clear-eyed association leaders is the best way to advance the industry on all the issues facing MH. The collage and response article above hit hundreds of mainstream media sights, to help set the record straight about the fact that MH already saves energy, and the options already exist for more energy savings. Image credits on the article, linked below.

That insight then requires expertise. It requires objectively.  It requires a willingness to dig in by each of those who are touched.

Until we shine the proper light on what’s right, and yet don’t avoid what’s wrong, we have not hit the right balance.

We should make you feel hopeful and good, while challenging you too. If we have never stepped on a toe, odds are you or we or both missed something.

Revealing tensions and reflecting various perspectives well is important.

The blind can only grope their way ahead.

Those blinded by habit, hubris or any of the weaknesses that divides humanity are stuck at the speed of groping.

The jet fuel that could power us ahead is to take the limiting dark and/or rose colored glasses off.

We must believe that we can do it, so a kind of positive attitude is necessary.

But we must also be real. Denying the cliffs along the roads we all travel is as bad as being paralyzed by fear.

Balance and tension alike makes for good journalism.

By being true first to each other, we can then as trade journalists better engage the mainstream media, the public, officials and policy types.

Showing reality, and then dealing with it – that is what makes us stronger.

Manufactured housing is a superior solution. Other forms of factory building each have their vital roles too.

American August in MHVille 2016

August 4th, 2016 No comments

In business and all other aspects of life, honest words and good deeds matter. The Ten Commandments include prohibitions not to lie, steal or cheat. In Acts, the Apostle Peter dramatically shows believers that reality as they witness a man and his wife die, one by one – for the error of deliberately misleading and deceiving.

So what does hell hold for the unrepentant politician who does these things?

AmericanAugustMHVilleDailyBusinessNewsMHProNews2016

There are honest mistakes, a slip of the tongue, poor choices of words, political fly-paper traps – and then there’s deliberate falsehoods and deception. As part of our American August in MHVille line up, my bride Soheyla uses words, thought-provoking images, satire and videos that take apart Hillary Clinton’s candidacy. A European university educated woman shares why Hill and Bill should not go back to the White House.

Taking Care of Business – Manufactured Housing Industry – October 2015

October 3rd, 2015 No comments

Before we get down to Taking Care of Business in MH, let me first note the following.

In the middle of October, we’ll mark the 6th anniversary launch of what we now call MHProNews.com.  In this issue, you’ll find quotable quotes from industry leaders and professionals who say in their own words, why this online trade journal and professional news source for MH is valuable to them.  We thank all our volunteers, writers, news tip sources and sponsors for making it possible for us to serve you. The article with quotes is linked below.

Here is a small snipet of those kudos comments that came in via LinkedIn…

KatreinaRuffinCPC-Kudos6thAnniversaryMHProNews-com-

Congrats_on_Anniversary_MHProNews

These are just some of those who sent kudos ad congrats via LinkedIn. Our thanks to all for the kind wishes and thanks for letting us serve you!

…let me stress, that the kind words go to the team.  We have volunteers, writers, formal team members, sponsors, those that give us news tips and more.  Together, we are pleased to be serving you and this great industry that we love.

Now, let’s focus on…

Taking Care of Business

We are over half a decade into the ‘recovery’ of manufactured housing.  That recovery is real, but far too modest.  We must each do our part to be ‘taking care of business.’

GrowthIsPainfulChangeIsPainfulMandyHale-TheSingleWoman-Pinterest=credit-postedMHLivingNews-com-

Image credit, Pinterest and the Single Woman.

Communications is a huge part of what MH needs. You may need something, but don’t know where to turn.  Or you may have a product or service that is PERFECT for someone that doesn’t even know you exist in MH. Or they may have met you once, but in the hustle and bustle of the post-great recession America, you’re not top of mind.  What to do?

ballons-up-lightbulbman-posted-masthead-blog-mhpronews-com-

To rise, you must let go of the dead weights of the past. We must look up to rise, not look down.

Many B2B firms are using this platform, or industry events that we promote, to make their products and services better known and more successful.  That is one way of taking care of business.

On the B2C side, taking care of business means reaching more consumers who have cash or good credit.  We have a number of articles that are “how to” or examples in the new features from pros, linked below.

We also have articles by attorneys, a reputation promotion professional – who in their unique ways are also ‘taking care of business.

Then there are articles on financing and news related to lending (the latest on GSEs, FHFA and Duty to Serve covered in the Daily Business News, is linked here).

One last Taking Care of Business not on the reading list below…I’ll be presenting on SuperCharged MH Marketing and Sales in just a few days at the New York Housing Association’s regional meeting – their 65th event!  Kudos to them for that milestone. Please see their brochure, linked here.

latonykovach-louisiville2015-mhpronews-superchargedsales-seminars2-

SuperCharged Marketing and Sales at the upcoming New York Housing 65th annual regional MH professional meeting.

Personal note…

Let me take a moment, and thank you for the opportunity to serve you and your colleagues.  In case it isn’t clear, I love manufactured housing.  Doing what we do to educate others and promote MH is challenging, but also a joy.  Sure, there are days or situations that arise that are headaches. But we believe strongly that MH has a bright future ahead.

There are still plenty of risks.  But working together with other forward thinkers and doers, we believe that our best days could be ahead.  Thanks for letting us share that vision and goal with you.

With no further adieu, here are the 18 new Featured Articles for October 2015 – Taking Care of MH Business.

Serious September – Manufactured Housing Industry Newsmakers, Reports, Articles and Interviews

September 2nd, 2015 No comments

Serious September 2015. It could just as easily be named, how to Scale Success, or Sliding Sideways September.  Which of the later two it will be depends on how each of us views and responds to events and opportunities.  Before outlining our STRONG Serious September Featured Articles and Interviews line up, let me explain what I mean.

green-key-success-pc-free-digital-photos-net-mhpronews-com- (2)

We could use as an executive summary for the next few paragraphs below that Media Engagement by MH Matters, and that Engaging the Media as Media is Very Useful.

1) We spent the early part of the summer documenting MH potential and opportunities on MHProNews.com.  As with the rest of our content, you can still see and access those articles. June is here and July, linked here.  We could summarize it by saying that with rents rising, site-building through the roof (on costs…) and inventories of ‘affordable homes’ in short supply in many markets, MH has plenty of opportunities for a record rebound.

summer2015state-of-manufactured-housing-industry-report-mhpronews-com-

The reports, linked via the image above, were part of a hot, hot summer on MHProNews.

dick-ernst-finmarkusa-posted-masthead-blog-mhpronews-com-

Dick Ernst, FinMark USA and Chariman of Financial Services division at MHI.

2) Among the reasons given for not rising higher in new home shipments than we have include financing and new regulations.  More on that shortly, but I’ll refer back to what Dick Ernst, now Chairman of MHI’s Financial Services Committee, has said.  There is no lack of capacity for our MH lenders to finance many more people, who are financially qualified. That could be rephrased as ‘we need to attract better credit customers,’ without ignoring providing the millions – who have no chance for a site built house – the opportunity to buy from us.

3) We have to broaden our industry’s base.  We have to attract the more credit qualified customers, without ignoring the traditional, affordable, entry-level side of our market.  There are retailers and MHCs who are doing it. That means, it can be done in your market too.  How do we do that, you ask?  Many ways, including through media and PR strategies.

Not Letting CFPB and their cheer leaders off the Hook

It is offensive to think MH pros can collectively do only one thing at a time well.  The people I know can walk, chew gum and carry on a cogent conversation all at once. En masse, there are tons we can do, together.

CFPB-ManufacturedHomeLoanRegulations-CFPB-Regulations-commentary-posted-MastheadBlogMHProNews1com-

CFPB-ManufacturedHomeLoanRegulations-CFPB-Regulations-commentary-posted-MastheadBlogMHProNews2com-

Any serious researcher is going to find what you see in the screen capture above. MHProNews, MHLivingNews and our other related media efforts are in-the-mix of the conversation on CFPB regulations and their impact on MH.

So while there absolutely has to be a focus on regulatory relief – that we support in word and deed – we ought not make that the one-and-only-thing needed for industry recovery.  Frankly, the regulatory relief sought is as much or more for those estimated 1.7 million households that have a home under 20k in value, as it is for professionals selling the industry’s pre-owned homes.

So we applaud the efforts of the national and state associations in MH that are working to correct those terrible ‘unintended consequence’ of Dodd-Frank. We’re doing more than cheering. We’re doing the meetings, the legislative outreaches, PLUS providing digital cover for the effort in the form of serious research that makes policy types and Senate staffers say (paraphrasing what a Democratic Senate staffer told me), Hey, that’s a pretty compelling argument.

Again, any serious researcher on Dodd-Frank and Manufactured Home Loan regulations will come across the MHProNews, MHLivingNews and our OpEd on The Hill Congress blog. We are woven into the conversation, which means that the REAL consumer and industry views are being presented.  Ditto someone checking out Doug Ryan/CFED comments, they are bound to find one or more of our articles that will correct the record, and are in favor of reforms sought by the MH Industry.

As further proof of the digital cover, Jan Hollingsworth’s latest column, “Renters’ Nation” has lit up since it was published.

http://manufacturedhomelivingnews.com/renters-nation-the-dark-side-of-dodd-frank-and-its-impact-on-affordable-housing/

87 hours and 38 minutes after the above was published, Webalizer reports there were 42,917 hits on that one article In MH Land, that’s astonishing.

What has to be done now is to scale that outcome

If you want the CFPB and/or the Senate to agree to changes in MH regulations, let me repeat that: what we now have to do is scale that readership result cited above. Please share the link above to Jan’s article with your local editor, and with your  Congressional Rep, your 2 U.S. Senators and the CFPB.

Let’s put this total readership of Jan’s article into perspective.

Just because some publication may have a million readers, that doesn’t mean that each article is read.  Case in point.  We took respected and popular Forbes’ article, shown below.  On July 29th, 2014 on a hot subject, it had 6,701 views.  13 months later, you see that the total views on that article are now up to 7,732.   What that Forbes article has in views in 4 and 2/3rds years, Jan’s latest article accomplished in less than 4 days.

Forbes=credit=taxWaste6.1BillionManHoursComplingFederalTaxCode-JanetNovack-postedMastheadBlog-MHProNews-com

Do you recall when this was big news for a while in the media? Look at the actual views on the article, this screen capture dated 9.2.2015.  7, 732 total views.  It isn’t just how many see it, but who sees it an then acts upon it.  Credit – Forbes.

Side Show September?

Word has it from certain hot spots that some are already grumbling that we gave Frank Rolfe his right to free speech via a featured interview in this month’s issue.  Why would we, as a pro-MH publisher, allow Frank to be quoted as he shared it?

Wouldn’t you want to be quoted accurately?

To be taken seriously as trade media, we have to be fair and balanced, or we risk sliding into irrelevance.  We quoted Doug Ryan accurately too, and I’m not equating the two by any means. When we quote:

  • Jim Clayton, or
  • Nathan Smith, or
  • John Bostick, or
  • Mark Weiss, or
  • Dick Jennison, or whomever,

we ought to quote them accurately. And we do.

Indirectly Related – a Note of Caution

There are already whispers about the wisdom of MHI VP Rick Robinson and MHI Chairman Nathan Smith going to a stage in about a week, when the person providing the stage is said to be in conflict with MHI and the NCC.

Policy

As a matter of policy, we’ve allowed people to critique me and our publication, on our own pages.  So we do this very fairly.  I don’t have to agree or disagree with Frank on his statements regarding MHI and the NCC to protect his right to speak out on those subjects, even though it was not at all on our minds when we asked him the questions. We had no idea what Frank’s replies would be.

If MHI wants to respond, they are welcome to do so.  We are willing to share that response, publicly. Fair and balanced reporting. Period.

We Provide, You Decide.” ©

Something we strive diligently to avoid is any FALSE or errant statement (this, in contrast to an unpopular opinion).  When someone says there are 50,000 or 55,000 MHCs in the U.S. (for example), we’ll either want them to correct that number (that totals is likely more like 45,000, according to informed sources) or we would want to cut the statement entirely.

But that’s not what Frank Rolfe did.  Frank stated his views, and in no way shared a claim that is not grounded in a fact, though those facts can be understood in a variety of ways.

The issues raised by others of late are not new, and are not a side show.  They are on the minds of many in MH; we know, because we’ve heard them often enough.  Its just that this was the first time someone wanted to say so, on the record.

“We Provide, You Decide.” ©

Listening and Taking Correction Well

We had a nice message recently that praised our reporting and commentary work, but then included two typos that needed to be corrected (only 2? ;-).  The writer explained, he didn’t want the corrections to be taken the wrong way.  My rapid response was to make the corrections, and thank him.

An MHI staff officer also sent us a correction on a typo recently. Same outcome as the above.  We want to get the facts right.  We thanked the party.

We published the early comments on Jan’s article, one was that ‘it was long.’ We worked that perspective into the article, linked below.  My response?  I thanked the person for the comment.  That said, the challenge with what we face is in MH as an industry is that we’ve let too much stuff build up over the years, and now we need more than 800 words to dig ourselves out.  The fact that there are so many hits on Jan’s article so fast strongly suggests the content is ‘just right.’

You Can’t Please Everyone, All the Time…

Nor should that be our goal.  If everything was perfect in MHVille, then maybe we’d only need 300 to 400 word columns that all say, ‘everything’s great!’

The reality is there is work to do. Plenty of it. Grab a tool, and let’s get to it.  Failure to address the issues that nag us costs new MH sales.

Record Setting!

MHProNews had 5 days in August that topped 100,000 hits.  Again, in an industry our size, that’s amazing.  On On August 21st, Webalizer reported the daily count was 180,959 hits.  Our readers don’t have to like every article, for there to be value.

#1-mhpronews-com-

MH Professionals, enthusiasts, educators, media, government officials and investors are among the key groups reflected in software and stats. You and thousands of others have made us the runaway #1 place for MH Industry News Tips and Views Pros Can Use. ©

I explained to an industry leader recently that we publish bad news on the Daily Business News; we do so in part, because it happens; but also because when someone gets (for example) arrested for swindling down payments from a buyer, publishing that acts as a cautionary tale.  Good practices are often rewarded with success, while bad ones are discovered and punished.

When there is a controversy, we ought not ignore it, unless paying attention only fuels something that needs the oxygen removed.

In the matter of MHI/NCC and Frank Rolfe, MHI has to consider why they wanted him on stage, and then they need to consider what might happen if they fail to heed the cautionary note above about the upcoming non-association event.

My bet?  If Nathan Smith and Rick Robinson go to that fast approaching private event of an allegedly disgruntled member as planned, the day will eventually come when they wished they had opted not to do so.  That’s my two cents, they can take it or leave it.

But there should be no doubt that we want what’s good for the organization and good for the industry!  We prove that day by day, showcasing the good, and periodically reminding people there are issues to address that need mending.  You’re reading because you know what’s published here matters and has influence.

Intro for our Featured Articles, Reports and Interviews for September…

As we reported above, we had an August that set records.  When you see the incredible line up we have for our Featured Articles for September, perhaps you’ll agree that this month could set new records with readers like you.

  • We have 2 New Cup of Coffee with…interviews. Chris Parish and Dan Rinzema are featured in their own interviews, which many will find inspirational, useful and insightful.
  • These “Cuppa” interviews will be quite different than the interview with Frank Rolfe, who took some very tough questions put to him, and he responded in what will no doubt be seen by many in wave making ways.  We have no direct connection to Frank, so when I commend him for taking the tough questions we gave him head-on and in a timely fashion, that’s sincerely meant.  Others should think to consider that practice.
  • We have a video interview with Matt Webb, in what ought to be a must-view for anyone interested in improving their management and bottom lines, especially in the MH Community sector, but frankly useful beyond that realm too.
  • We have 4 columns by 5 respected attorneys; you’ll see their important topics that can protect your business, below.
  • We have 2 unique reports on how the new Appraisal Rule roll out is going, with our related MH Industry Survey results coming out soon.
  • There is New York Housing Association’s upcoming regional trade show and educational event.
  • Researching Manufactured Housing Industry Personalities, Organization’s and Topics.
  • A look at the hot early response to Renters’ Nation, the Dark Side of Dodd-Frank’s Impact on MH.
  • Ken Haynes Jr. sounds off on a recent media report.
  • AIA celebrates their 15th anniversary, kudos to them and check out their press release.
  • There are 2 inspirational/motivational articles.
  • Certainly not least for anyone who wants to close more sales, there are videos and an article on reputation management.

With no further adieu, let’s jump into this month’s new Featured Articles, Interviews and Reports.

August 2015 in Manufactured Homeville

August 1st, 2015 1 comment

In August 2009, shortly after the venerable MHMerchandiser Magazine quietly closed, my truly better half and I made the decision to launch an eZine for manufactured housing industry pros.  We have a vision of what we launched as being the virtual first step in creating platforms that would inform and inspire innovation that would lead to industry recovery and growth.

1-mhpronews-logo-manufactured-housing-professional-news

ChrisOlvera-MerchandiserEditor-viaLinkedInMastheadBlog-MHProNews-com-

Don Glisson Jr., President and CEO of Triad Financial Services candidly said he thought we were crazy to launch during the worst downturn in MH history (and the worst economy in the U.S. since the Great Depression).  As Steve Lefler of Modular Lifestyles said, quoting Apple’s Steve Jobs,

“Here’s to the crazy ones!…They are the ones who change things…”

Let’s quickly say that while we’re happy to play various roles, including that of the spark plug,  we’ve never been alone in this great pro-MH Industry adventure.  This and MHLivingNews.com have been about collaboration and team work, aimed at ever greater industry success and growth.

TeamWorkWorks-MastheadBlogMHProNews-com-

No matter how things may appear, success is routinely a matter of team work.

MHProNews has more traffic/visitors than all ‘like’ national MH media combined.

The original eZine evolved into two, full blown trade media sites. This site has the first and still only Daily Business News and the most robust emailed news updates – delivered twice weekly – found anywhere in MH.
