Jennifer Hall, Doris Hydrick and Dennis Hill – Tunica Show Open Letter

March 24th, 2018 No comments

Jennifer Hall, Doris Hydrick and Dennis Hill @ SCMHI,
There’s only two full-scale professional trade shows in the manufactured home profession today. Louisville and your South Central Manufactured Housing Institute (SCMHI) event in Tunica.

At least two of you personally know the sources for our report on Keith Holdbrooks and Clayton Homes decision to scale back in 2017, and to not participate in 2018.

By holding the story linked above until after the event, I’m sure you understand how that protected the show for 2018, and maximized the event’s odds for success.

All three of you are deeply aware of what we’ll politely call the ‘industry’s politics.’  Too few are willing to speak out publicly about what many are discussing privately.

Namely, the various ways that Clayton Homes and Berkshire Hathaway owned companies are exercising their power in – and over? – the manufactured housing industry.

I have two way communications with those in MHI, MHARR and their members, including with 21st (among others), as well as with those who aren’t a member of either national trade group.

As you know, in 2018, the bulk of the homes on display in Tunica were from producing members of the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR), with fewer exhibitors from among Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) members.

As someone approaches retirement, several things can happen.

Especially if someone perceives that their livelihood is dependent on – or at a minimum, influenced by – a giant operation like Berkshire Hathaway owned brands such as:

  • Clayton Homes,
  • Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance (VMF),
  • 21st Mortgage Corp (21st),
  • Shaw, and the list goes on,

careful public positions are often taken.

Among the things that can happen for anyone – but perhaps particularly for those approaching retirement – is that fear and self-preservation motivations may set in.  We understand those realities.

There are states, certain executives have told me, where 50 to 70 percent of the floor dues paid to a state association come from Clayton Homes, or result from sales of other HUD Code manufactured homes sold by a Clayton retailer.

Industry Trajectory

Since Kevin Clayton did that video interview, their market share went from 25 to some 50 percent of the industry’s new home production, per their own data and statements.  It does no one any good to ignore the obvious. As a show attendee insightfully said to me this week, “the trajectory of the industry” has been toward consolidation.

It’s not revealing our sources to say that at least 2 of you know the sources for our Holdbrooks/Clayton report.

It’s obvious that Clayton et al can exert “pressure,” be they in the Tunica Show, or not.

We’ve been told by industry members that some felt compelled to be in MHI, and some feel compelled to support certain events.  Other forms of pressure are applied to smaller operations.

Berkshire Hathaway, MHI and the Resistance

It’s high time for more MH professionals to do whatever they can to combat Berkshire Hathaway’s (BH) and their MHI mouthpiece threat to the independent operations in our industry at all levels.

You 3 don’t have to speak out publicly.

But you can take several private steps to insure the independence of the Tunica show going forward.

Otherwise, as various industry voices told MHProNews, BH is likely to do to the Tunica Show what they are said to have done to the North Carolina event.  Namely, “kill it.”

Let me tell you some of what this year’s Tunica event reinforced for me.  We know from website statistics what readership is like.  But we learned from the numbers of attendees who stepped up and commented, or thanked us, etc. that your crowd includes our audience in significant numbers.

And our audience includes the giants, but also those who overwhelmingly want to stay independent.

Thinking Out Loud

Thinking out loud. Don’t you think that giving aspects of the show to cronies of MHI is short sighted? You surely know how this works.  What a crony learns, they report back. When you put a crony on a platform, you may be sending a message to your attendees that is problematic.

You can send the industry, MHI and Warren Buffett’s brands a powerful signal.

You can show your support for those non-BH independents – retailers, communities, producers, and various product/service suppliers – without turning away the Berkshire brands.

But if I were you, I’d let those Berkshire brand companies politely understand that they don’t dictate to the SCMHI show.

What’s Coming?

We have reasons to believe that for a variety of market and legal reasons, in the next few years, Berkshire’s grip on manufactured housing could be broken (think about this point in terms of allegations such as class action, antitrust, tortious interference etc.).

Don’t make your final legacy that of a door mat. The French after they were conquered by the Nazis during WW II created a resistance. That resistance movement became critical for them to get back their freedom, just a few years later.

In hindsight, Buffett and Berkshire didn’t save” manufactured housing in 2003; they arguably set about to conquer the industry.

Directly and indirectly, through commission and omission, they and their Arlington-based association tool witnessed the destruction of thousands of independent businesses, including several producers of HUD Code manufactured homes. Many of those now defunct producers used to be built in the region that supplies your show.

Jen, Doris and Dennis – please be courageous enough to resist BH and MHI any way that you can.

Be loyal enough to those independent industry colleagues you’ve met and known to resist the bullies whose various alleged practices reduced a once-great industry to its currently modest status.

I’ve said before, even as a 25-plus year manufactured housing veteran, it took time to begin to fully appreciate what was happening in the industry.

Looking back, it’s easy to point to ways they targeted us for elimination, years before we spotlighted first MHI, and the BH.

Dennis, you and others like you surely must realize that you’ve been targeted too. Sure, you can retire as planned, or you can go out with a flurry in a grand fashion.

No announcement needs to be made.

No challenge or gauntlet has to be tossed down.

But you owe it to thousands to join the #BHResistance, the #antitrust crowd.

If the SCMHI does so, I predict the 2019 show will be the best event ever.

Think about the trajectory.

When independent retailers die – or are killed off – it is no surprise when the factories that supplied those ‘dealers’ are killed off too. That’s the trend that the MHI chart above also demonstrates. As independent retailers grow fewer in number, so too there are fewer independent producers of HUD Code manufactured homes.

Think about the allegations like those noted herein or linked, and the mounting evidence.

Think about charts like those above that reflects how those independents you’ve known for years were wronged by forces they may fully understood at the time.

Resistance is wisdom.

Resistance will bring its own rewards.

We chose not to be slaves of monopolistic forces.

We work and pray daily for the future of our great industry. May manufactured housing experience a rebirth that yields new glory days.

We encourage others to be a part of the kind of resistance that made America a free people. ## (Industry events, commentary, opinion, and analysis.)

PS: Readers should not presume that any of the three addressed, nor the provider of the photo at the top, are a source for information to MHProNews.

PSS: Manufactured housing isn’t the only industry that ‘consolidation’ is taking place in.  It may or may not work the same in other indusries, as it has in ours.  But across the left-right media and political spectrums, there are a growing number of voices calling to break up the monopolistic tech giants, and are sounding the alarm about giant players like Buffett’s Berkshire.  Ignore the warning signs at your own peril.

MH’s Amazing April 2015 – Navigating Threats, Growing Opportunities

April 1st, 2015 No comments

We are getting details ‘out there’ about the recent Tunica MH Show, and they reflect a growing trend of improvements for our factory-built home industry. We’ll share a video interview that has snippets from the new location for the Tunica Show below, along with a link to facts and figures that are important to all segments of our industry.

Part of what our seminars and panel discussions covered in Tunica was ‘the future of manufactured housing.’  The topic covered both threats and opportunities. It will be one of the videos you should look for later in April.

It is our custom on the first Masthead post of the month to share the links to the new Featured Articles, in this case, for April 2015.  Those are below…

For example, you’ll see an article on Fair Housing by attorney Nadeen Green that ought to be an eye opener. In fact, it should be required reading for all who are managing or front line with the general public in selling or leasing homes.

Lenny Kopowski brings out a topic that is critical for our industry, zoning and pre-emption. This has national importance for HUD Code and modular builders, retailers and others.

Maureen McMullan joins us for the first time, with an article on housing booms, the Marcellus and how an MH firm is tackling that opportunity. It’s a good read!

Bob Vahsholtz continues a theme in his column that is near to many of our hearts. How do we get the MH industry back onto a historically improving and innovative track?

Kathleen Bianculli hits on National Playground Safety Week, and what that can mean for MHC owners. Timely reading!

Zig Ziglar and Tim Connor have each provided their valued insights into motivation, management and inspiration that can support healthier bottom lines. Don’t miss their wisdom.

I’m providing you an article with a snapshot of the Tunica Show in the last 4 years, “by the numbers.” This will include quotable quotes from the MH Industry veteran who knows the show the best! The Louisville and Tunica events are more important to the industry than many realize. So the report plus the video above are helpful to all from coast-to-coast.

How many in the media or public realize that the above is a mobile home?
We have our work cut out for us, but that is an opportunity in disguise!

Your scribe has also shared an article – loaded with videos! And graphics! – that is focused on the theme of “Growing Manufactured Housing via Compelling Words, Images and Savvy Education.” Want sustainable, positive growth? Then please do read, watch and pass them along to your circle of influence.

We will be bringing you a host of videos from Tunica in the weeks ahead. If you haven’t been on lately, here are some published items below – most with videos! – you may have missed. In no particular order – because each has its own powerful points – useful for our industry. Here are the red on white with blue links to the latest in consumer and general public focused information…

Your team should know these videos, sharing them wisely, so they can sell more homes. They should spread the word via social media, blog posts, with links, etc..

With no further adieu, here are the titles, authors and links for the Featured Articles for April 2015.

Nuclear November 2014 – Energy or Explosions for Manufactured Housing?

November 1st, 2014 No comments

As the headline implies, this brief intro to our monthly line-up of featured articles isn’t about environmental or energy policies, as important as each may be. Rather, we’re using a metaphor of releasing nuclear energy in a way that will be productive, or we risk energy that is destructive instead.

Darlington Nuclear Generating Station – Canada

nuclear-bomb-credit-wikicommons-posted-masthead-blog-mhpronews-com-The atom – and then the nuclear – bombs are the most destructive forces generally known to humanity. But harnessing such “nuclear energy” powers the electric grids in many homes and businesses worldwide. That principle is our brief thought for today.

When you read

> Marty Lavin’s article,

> Cup of Coffee with…Ross Kinzler or

> Tim Connor’s article on management,

or other commentary in Industry Voices, there is an unplanned but common thread! That thread – IMHO – includes leadership, but it also includes channeling energy and facing challenges. Ignore a challenge, and it will sooner or later catch up with you or your firm, as have the finance-or-image issues for our industry.

Someone suggested we are trying to start a revolt by raising the leadership issue, not so. We are simply giving voice to those who are already talking about these topics.

I recall a MHEC meeting about 3.5 years ago, and a veteran state executive turned to then MHI President Thayer Long, and said,‘Thayer, with all due respect, you are not getting the job done.’ Was it a coincidence that not long afterward, Thayer resigned and went on to other association work?

The point is that it is best to have issues like leadership – when they are being so widely discussed already – voiced. Let people see precisely what others are thinking. That gives others the opportunity to adapt as needed. As a leader at a publicly traded firm told me, ‘Tony, there are advantages to transparency.’

We’ll provide a periodic forum for that sort of leadership discussion, so long as the topic resonates with MH Industry pros and enthusiasts like you.

We are ‘recruiting’ new team members. As I describe our industry via videos and words – written and spoken – part of what I share is a vision of our being agents for positive, profitable change for Manufactured Housing in America.

In a trillion dollar a year U.S. housing industry, we can and must muster the will and wisdom to triple or more our new home shipment levels. When that happens, most all engaged in the mix will benefit.

Some cower or are angered by discussions of changes needed in MH. Being afraid of the public discussion is about as smart as being afraid of a virus you know how to avoid or treat. And if you don’t know how to treat a virus, then its time to learn.

Experts and Informed Opinions!

I deliberately reach out every month to those I know will have a different point of view than mine, because how else can we see where the truth is without comparison between varying ideas?

Agree or Disagree – let us know, with your own OpEd or letter to the editor. What is certain is that the energy – negative and positive – flowing through the manufactured and modular housing’s “power grid” must be tapped and channeled, or it will become destructive.

Speaking of energy, we bring you three different views in one article below on the DOE Energy standards for manufactured homes. “We Provide, You Decide.” (c)

Manufactured Housing’s Fairy Tales vs. Roaring Ahead

March 19th, 2014 5 comments

For all the noise being created from an office in DC and Indy, you'd think the famous 500 series race-cars were roaring; but they're not.

We will park that thought for now, and before looking at a "manufactured housing fairy tale," briefly survey what's truly advancing in our industry, including:

story-reading-kids-wikicommons-credit-masthead-blog-mhpronews.jpgNow, please gather up all the kids and young at heart, because it's story telling time...

Manufactured Housing's Fairy Tales

Thunder! Lightening! Hail and Rain!  All sorts of literary devices are used in story telling, and fairy tales are no exception.

Let's imagine below an upside down, all-hypothetical view "through the looking glass."

Danny Ghorbani named MHI's Man of the Yearmanufactured-housing-institute-award-man-of-the-year-masthead-blog-mhpronews-com(1).jpg

Danny was named as the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) 2014 Man of the Year as the crowning achievement for his years of successful negotiations on behalf of the manufactured housing industry. A list of Danny's accomplishment included, but are not limited to:

  • Successfully Lobbying the Senate Banking Committee on GSE reform by sending them a 30 page document that was delivered via FedEx.
  • Dismissing a lobbyist, and single-handedly lobbying the House on GSE reform, and shepherding the final form of the bill personally.
  • Addressing an extraordinary joint session of Congress, where his impassioned plea for manufactured housing was met by a standing ovation, followed by a call for an immediate voice vote that unanimously passed GSE reform, which includes all that his FedEx'd 30 page position paper called on.
  • The Presidential Motorcade raced down Pennsylvania Avenue, so President Obama could immediately sign into law the GSE reform documentdanny-ghorbani-president-obama-credit-wikicommons-masthead-blog-mhpronews-com Congress passed at Danny's prompting. The President took a smartphone selfie with Danny, to commemorate the event and thanked Mr. Ghorbani for the brilliant way he ended DC partisan gridlock.
  • HUD's secretary asked for the president to issue an executive order to change Pam Danner's title from career administrator to a non-career administrator of the HUD Manufactured Housing program, out of profound respect for the emailed missive (err, memorandum…) Danny had issued on the subject.
  • Pam Danner was instructed by the White House to give Mr Ghorbani carte blanche to fully implement every part of the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act (MHIA) of 2000.
  • Pam Danner was also ordered by POTUS to make Danny the honorary head of the Manufactured Housing Consensus Committee (MHCC), to suspend any of the rules and rubber stamp any request Mr. Ghorbani made.
  • All federal agencies were instructed to joyfully receive Mr. Ghorbani on any topic, any time.
  • MHI voted to reconstitute themselves into a strictly 'post-production association,' with every manufacturing member of MHI racing to pay their dues to Danny as the head of the reconstituted 'production association,' which Mr. Ghorbani has been calling for in many of his monthly columns for the past few years.

  • The Library of Congress asked the Journal  for copies of every article that Danny had ever published, to be framed, set in glass cases that were hermetically sealed and protected by armed guards! These were then ordered to be placed side by side with the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
  • Danny ordered the producers of the movie Wayne's World  to re-edit the movie, to make he and George Allen the new stars, and to have everyone in the film fall on their faces as they chanted the words, "We're not worthy! We're not worthy!"

  • George F. Allen, named as Danny's paid press agent, ordered all MH Park owner/operators in America to change their location names toking-george-allen-coba7-community-investor-blog-allen-letter-george-allen2-masthead-blog-mhpronews0com- include the words, "land-lease lifestyle community,"  to become direct-dues paying members of his COBA7 group, and to memorize the fabled "Ah Ha, Oh No" and other formulas he has preached (err…enlightened us with…) for years.
  • MHProNews was ordered to apologize for having 821 times more page views and outrageously more readership daily than Allen's blog has monthly, and was told to place Allen's weekly blog and Danny's periodic emailed missives (errr…memorandum…) to be the only 2 items shown on the MHProNews home page.
  • The NCC's Jenny Hodge begged George Allen to allow them to merge with Allen's International Networking Roundtable and COBA7.
  • Meanwhile the newly reconstituted post-production association witnessed Dick Jennison beseeching 'King for many-a-day' George Allen to become the President, Chancellor, Viceroy and His Excellency of the not-yet-renamed MHI as well as to simultaneously hold the Executive Vice Presidency of the NCC. Allen's first royal decree was to make every session at the next 5 years of the not-yet-renamed-MHI Congress and Expo to include himself, Danny Ghorbani and their buddies.
  • All the future Louisville and Tunica Manufactured Housing Trade Shows were told to make sure that George himself approved how many Community Series Homes were to be displayed, and that no 'bigger boxes for bigger bucks' homes should ever be showcased without his personal OK. Naturally, the shows educational segments were to be managed by George, with Danny's implied imprimatur.
  • Industry lenders were told by President Obama to buy 500 credit score loans, backed by the Federal government, with 5% down, 30 yeardanny-ghorbani's-head-on-superman-cutout-mharr-ceo-manufatured-housing-pronews-masthead-blog-mhpronews terms and guaranteed credit approval, all of which could be waived in cases of hardship or the need for a no-doc deal. This move, Danny assured the nation, will take industry shipments to new highs in the 500,000+ units annually range. When asked about repos that would follow, Danny replied: “Please, don't worry about any of the repos that will come. Surely, the Treasury Department would find the money to cover those losses somehow! After all, we can always borrow the money from China.”  All nodded at the wisdom of these words.
  • In celebration of all that Danny has done for the Industry, the Journal renamed itself The MHARR Journal. The Allen Professional Letter also renamed itself, The Allen About Allen Letter, but we will Talk about Danny Ghorbani too and Send us your Check Letter. And since Mr. Allen likes abbreviations, TAAAbwDGtaSuyCL for short. Readers were instructed to focus on a column called 'Allen Knows Best' or AKB for short. Subscribers to the TAAAbwDGtaSuyCL climbed back over 300 for the first time in over 5 years.
  • Danny and George agreed to tie their right hands behind their respective backs, while using only their left hands to design new logos for the new production and post-production associations. Of course, the pair would use images of themselves, seated on royal thrones, atop the new logos, would name the new groups personally and…

…and then the fairy tale, imagination station, day-dream ended.

Fairy tale or Farce…

  • GSE reform has not passed. We'd love to see it happen! While this past Sunday's announcement was a hopeful step, with plenty of credit to share all around and that MHI was very much involved in; still, experts say that odds are this won't happen in 2014.
  • HR 1779 and S 1828 haven't failed, they are advancing faster than GSE reform and deserve the vocal support of and effort of all pros, which includes George and Danny, if they truly care about selling more homes, protecting communities, retailers and manufacturers.
  • The above might be funny as a make believe story, if it wasn't already such a farce…?'…

…on the serious side, in Manufactured Housing's Pogo, we shared the following quotable quote.

Isn’t it amazing how many thousands of peoples’ lives in this industry have been upended by the unwillingness of so few people to get along?”

When will we learn to deal with the underlying issues?

Distressed Signal, Heart Break and Bouncing on Floors

January 29th, 2014 No comments

There are so many things that make this a fascinating industry and a routine joy to be involved in. There are also tales of heart ache and heart break. Let's preview and surf some current manufactured housing topics.

First, the post Louisville Show feedback continues to come in and we have some guest columns for our upcoming February issue. Those are routinely positive. One that tickled my funny bone was about bouncing floors, look for that and others this weekend when our February 2014 issue of MHProNews goes live.

Ready for some Coffee?

We will have another exclusive – and a first! – for this new February issue. A Cup of Coffee with…Nathan Smith is planned to go live this weekend! What will make this a first in our wildly popular series is that this will be a VIDEO interview. So you will get the colorful personality and insightful comments of SSK partner and MHI Chairman Nathan Smith in all his glory.

Nathan Smith – SSK Communities and MHI Chairman, left, L. A. “Tony” Kovach, right,
still photo from the upcoming video interview, A Cup of Coffee with…Nathan Smith.”

We cover a wide range of topics in this free-flowing interview, so don't miss it. The video was made possible by our collaboration with

Terrific Tunica!

Watch our upcoming new issue for more news about the rapidly approaching 2014 Tunica Manufactured Housing Show!

Just as seminars were a HOT ticket at Louisville, as the photo below reveals, that's how it may be in Tunica! We had a full house – or even standing room only – last week at Louisville. Please check out the red-hot 2014 Tunica Show business building seminar line up at the link here.

So we are looking ahead and making plans for the 2014 Tunica Show in March 26-28th. If it isn't on your calendar already, please mark your calender and make your plans to go!

For you Duck Dynasty fans…

…well, there are rumors afoot, no promises either way, but don't be surprised…

That's some of the good news coming up.

Distress Signals

We also have serious topics, even sad and distressing ones.

Let's run through a few topics of interest to Manufactured Housing Industry Professionals.

  • Texas Congressman Jeb Henserling's House Financial Services Committee oversight hearing this week with Richard Cordray with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureay (CFPB). The video of the testimony on this certainly has its elements of common inside-the-DC-Beltway politics. Some of the partisan Democratic committee member comments made the CFPB seem like the the greatest thing for consumers since sliced bread. Some of the Republican testimony would be construed by the D Party as a call for the financial system to melt-down anew. Even those sharply contrasting comments shed fascinating light on what is happening with this new organization which will dominate the financial landscape in America. An intial report is found linked here. We plan a video summary of the more specifically MH commentary in the days ahead.
  • As if on cue and connected to the CFPB/Dodd-Frank issue, is a letter that Barney Frank penned to one or his MHC constituents. Please see attached below as a download, shared by the man addressed Congressman Frank's addressed for our reader's benefit, as the then congressman explained there was no intent on his part to harm the MH Industry, which he he has long supported.

  • Also on cue, a message from another pro, who tells me he has jumped all of the Dodd-Frank hoops, but due to a technical glitch on a federal website, he is out of the lending business as of January 10th. I know this person. The impassioned, tragically funny message (the writer tried to make fun of their own painful dilemma, which is all too real and not at all funny…), read like a glitch on, only it was MH finance related. "If you like being a lender and want to keep your credentials, you can. Period." Or not. Compared to the 5 main MH Personal Property (chattel) lenders, this is a modest operation, but let's stop and think about the precedent. If it is as reported, you can imagine the heart break of the pros involved when big brother shut them down for…nothing. Please support HR 1779 and S 1828.

  • I've asked the above referenced writer to keep me posted and to consider sharing the story.

  • Then, MHARR shared a link to the House Financial Services Committee website, where they are taking comments from pros like you impacted by the CFPB. Don't miss your chance to sound off! My buddy mentioned above ought to, for sure. Gotta story to tell House Financial Services? You should too.

Speaking of Financing…new lenders?!

If you are coming to Tunica, don't be surprised if you see one – or more – new lenders. We've been contacted by several. I'm not sure that Dennis Hill can juggle his space any more there to create additional booths, but lenders that see the value in manufactured housing are planning to – or already have – entered this space.

Be in Tunica to see how that shapes up.

Is the Liberal Agenda Sinking?

My Libertarian friends (no, I'm an independent, not a libertarian, but understand their appeal) tell me the current Administration is doing more to destroy the Democratic-left-progressive-liberal agenda than all the Republican and Libertarian faithful possibly could. Examples:

  • ObamaCare is polling ever lower (in one new poll, 2 out of 3 now oppose).
  • Community bankers are being forced out of home lending, or are closing altogether (…thanks CFPB).
  • MH Industry lenders are cutting or curtailing programs for low cost/low balance MH loans.
  • Income inequality is being touted from podiums and TelePrompTers, while current policies – the last 5 years – have made the rich richer and the poor poorer. Workforce participation – true unemployment – is at the lowest in a generation.
  • What's happening in North Dakota – where workers at McDonald's and WalMart start around $15 an hour – could be America's story, but the adminstration loves to throttle fracking on all but private lands, even while they take credit for more oil being pumped now than during the Bush years. Will voters notice – or remember – in the fall? Will you?
  • Most Americans see the country as being on the wrong track.

While we say all of this, let's keep in mind what Sam Zell said last fall. These tales of economic troubles and woe mean that affordable housing will be more needed than ever before!

Will all these federal issues help Republicans come the fall?

It is still early, who knows? But the mainstream media's headlines have long forgotten the government shut down last fall, and generic Republicans are slightly ahead of generic Democrats in congressional polls. Let's see if the elephant party can manage to do something with that, or will they shoot their own foot off again?

Whatever happens, count on us to bring you the most Industry News, Tips and Views Pros Can Use. That Barney Frank letter is linked below. See you this weekend, with our strong February 2014 line up! ##

Starting the New Year off Right for MHPros

January 1st, 2014 No comments

Happy New Year! As 2013 has now gone into the history books, a new year – 2014 – lies before us like a stack of clean white paper waiting to be written or printed. Let's look quickly at a handful of topics, before sharing the line up for our January 2014 issue of

manufactured-housing-new-year-2014-posted-manufactured-housing-pronews-.jpgAddressing Concerns

There are some who are experiencing significant angst, with all of the Dodd-Frank regulations coming online.

This is a valid concern, and there are common sense steps to take.

First, find out exactly what financing our industry's top lenders are offering in 2014 under the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CFPB) implementation of Dodd-Frank and SAFE.

My suggestion is to be in Louisville on January 22nd for the free finance seminar – that industry finance expert Dick Ersnt of – will be moderating.

Perhaps every major lender in our industry will be there, and thus you can get a quick feel for what you can still do to sell homes in 2014! We also recommend political engagement, please see the one of the hottest articles in our industry on that topic, linked here.

Big vs. Little Industry Businesses?

There are times we hear via email, calls, at during virtual or live events that there is a tug of war between little and big business in our industry. Some say this is really evident at the association level. My own experience is that this is a false dichotomy. Sure, big business may have some advantages, but so do 'mom and pop' operations!

Each has something to learn from the other, and thus it makes sense for state associations, the National Communities Council, et al to have members from all sizes of enterprises. A near perfect example follows below.

An Exclusive Interview with an Owner who has been Small, Medium and Large!

We feature this month an exclusive interview with a community owner/operator who has personally experienced every size operation! He has done so with award-winning success.

If you think you “know” this gent, because you've seen or met him at a meeting or event, guess again! Dive into our latest eye opening interview, A Cup of Coffee with...Rick Rand. My prediction? You'll learn, be inspired and even his best friends will discover keen insights.

The New Face on the MH Block will bring years of accomplishments and success!

It won't surprise me at all if MHI's new general counsel and award winning author becomes a popular face and force in MH circles during 2014! Check out our exclusive interview, A Cup of Coffee with…Rick Robinson.

Louisville Looms!

louisville-manufactured-housing-show-countdown-clock-posted-mhpronews0com-masthead-blog-.pngAs I'm writing this, the countdown clock on the LouisvilleShow website is now only 2 weeks, 6 days and less than 12 hours away! I was a little concerned that the big rush of pre-registrations in December might slow down, but we are in fact running well ahead of the pace in 2013, which was a post 2010 record attendance!

Show Chairman Ron Thomas Sr. has a column on the best attended event in all of manufactured housing in 2013.

A new video done in association with our new friends at will give you a quick snapshot of what you can see and do in Louisville Show, held at the north wing of the Kentucky Exhibition Center, in perfect climate controlled comfort. Regardless of the weather outside, the weather inside will be terrific for deal making, education, networking and growing your business.

When I'm not walking homes, networking or in the seminar room, you find me and our team at booth #115, please stop by and say hi.

Tunica is just over the horizon too!

Please check out Tunica Show Chairman Keith Bennett's insights and comments on their show, which will feature some 80 homes! We love to go to both of these major trade shows, and hope that many of you will too.

There are 18 featured articles to start out the new year in January 2014. The full run-down, many of the VERY important – and a number of must reads follows below.

Manufactured Housing’s 2013 Spring Break!

March 30th, 2013 No comments

2013 is off to a strong start. Shipments are continuing their two year rise. It seems that Spring Break plus the flurry of March's business activities, including a strong finish for the Tunica Manufactured Housing Show, some of our regular writers needed some time off. Frankly, we could have published a few articles more, but the Featured Articles module on our home page looks best when there are 16-18 stories or just 9. Rather than publish less than 16, we decided to reward ourselves with Easter off and hereby wish you and yours a good Passover and a Happy Easter.

Speaking of publishing gems, Lubbock Online had this great quote from 1981, by then President Ronald Reagan:

This weekend, people across the world will join in holy celebrations, drawing spiritual sustenance from their worship. Here in America, religious beliefs are central to our founding principles. We draw special strength from our unity as a people who trust in God, and from the lessons for us and our children in our rituals.

Saturday night, Jewish people everywhere will sit with their families and friends for the celebration of Passover—a celebration of freedom.

Beginning with the traditional Seder meal, Passover is rich with tradition and symbolism. Its observance reminds us that the fight for freedom and the battle against oppression, waged by Jews throughout their history, is one of which all free people are a part.

Beginning today and culminating on Sunday morning, Christians will celebrate with their families the resurrection of Christ, His victory over death. We will remember that He gave His body and His blood—washing clean the faults and the shortcomings of the world. In our rejoicing we will renew the hope that is ours through the risen Lord.

Nancy joins me in extending to all who celebrate Passover or Easter our warmest wishes for a time filled with joy and spiritual fulfillment and our hope that one day men and women everywhere will be able to worship God in the manner of their choosing.”

– Ronald Reagan.

It is easy to find inspiration in the above!

In terms of business insight and inspiration, don't miss our exclusive interview, A Cup of Coffee with...Sam Landy, along with the marketing, community, legal, inspirational and other fine featured articles you find with us every month.

During this April Spring Break when we published a few less articles, for those heavy readers, why not dig into our archives? Thousands do every month!
